Diego Cusano is an Italian artist who is famous for incorporating everyday items into his illustrations to create intriguing art. The appeal of these pieces is that the viewer needs to rely on his imagination in order to fully comprehend the intention of the artist. Cusano makes this quite easy with the perfect placement of the items inside the illustration. A tape measure becomes a giraffe, a sea shell dubs as a wavy skirt, while a single popcorn represents the fluffy coat of a sheep.

Cusano refers to himself as a “Fantasy Researcher” who “turns the ordinary into the extraordinary, climbs over the border between reality and fantasy inviting to smile and to free the imagination, wherever and ever.” And it takes just one look at his works to realize this is quite a fitting description.

Cusano’s intriguing combinations of everyday items and illustrations have brought him significant popularity on social media, with his Instagram profile boosting an impressive following of 300K users. Additionally, his talent was recognized by various Italian and international companies, such as the pasta brand Barilla and the toymaker LEGO, who recruited him for their marketing campaigns.

German artist Sergio Ingravalle creates illustrations that will make you think about life, society, and the current state of the world. They are thought-provoking and tend to linger in the back of your mind for quite a while.

Ingravalle describes his works, collected in a series titled Mindshots, as “universally understandable illustrations which deal with different aspects of our modern life.” They explore different but relatable subjects of social media, distractions, overworking, broken relationships, and more.

“The inspiration for each piece comes from my everyday life while working, talking, watching a movie, hanging out with friends, or getting bored in the waiting rooms. Some are socially critical, humorous, or just plain ridiculous,” the artist explains on his website.

Ingravalle’s illustrations have been exhibited in art galleries and featured in a number of publications. He also collaborated with a number of high-profile brands through his Maivisto Studio, including Adidas, Marvel, ESPN, National Geographic, and Peugeot.

Ingravalle also published a book titled 50 Mindshots, featuring 50 of his illustrations. If you can’t get a hold of this book, don’t worry; the artist also shares all of his works on social media. Continue scrolling to check out more of them below.

Portugal-based artist Mary Maka creates illustrations and animations inspired by fantasy and nature. Plants and animals are the main subjects in her works, but they are depicted in a way that turns them into fantastical creatures.

Maka has a unique style that is characterized by the use of vibrant colors and adorning the subject with exaggerated features like lips, ears, and legs.

Maka created several nature-inspired series so far, including a particularly intriguing series called Endless Forest. The works from this series are dedicated to the works of Amos Tutuola. The late Nigerian writer is known for his short stories that were influenced by folk tales of West Africa’s ethnic group Yoruba.

In Endless Forest, Maka tried to bring the spirited animals from Tutuola’s stories to life in her own unique way.

“Nature is the main source of inspiration for me, with all its forms and flow. Plants and animals are often in my illustrations,” Maka shares on her website. “And when I need an interesting hero, I know where to look — the subway. Seriously, it always works! I met all my characters there. If you combine everything together, you get amazing stories.”

The works of Seoul-based illustrator Fraink are not realistic or eye-catching in the sense that you will be amazed by his lines and use of shadows. But they are surprisingly captivating and calming, thanks to the use of uncharacteristic colors and the depiction of everyday scenes.

Fraink started creating his intriguing artwork on his iPad while pursuing an industrial design degree. However, he only started sharing them with the rest of the world couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised with the overall positive reactions.

In his works, Fraink puts much emphasis on color. He mostly steers away from pastels and instead opts for bold colors with high intensity. Another integral part of his creative process is the way he uses those colors.

Adding an abstract note to his illustrations, he chooses to color them as opposed to conventional practice. The roads can be blue, the sun pink, and the hills orange.

“The overall composition is expressed simply and monotonically, but the elements contained in it are rough and bold. I want to draw the themes and stories in the work to move alive and lively,” the artist shares.

Fraink regularly shares his new works on Instagram. Check more of them below.

Simplistic one-line drawings look fantastic and are easy to do, right? Well, the first part of it is correct. However, they are all but easy to create, according to creative studio Loooop.

Loooop, who call themselves the first creative studio specialized in one-line works, creates one-liners as part of their popular project One Line Fever. Making just a single one-line illustration takes hours and sometimes even days. Still, the effort is well worth it, since the results are amazing.

“We believe that, as simple as it looks, line art is timeless and can offer unlimited possibilities in terms of message, medium, and usage,” Loooop explains.

The artists from Loooop have a wide spectrum of motifs and subjects that they reimagine as one-line artworks. This includes pop culture characters like Mickey Mouse, athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, and a series of everyday items and objects.

Loooop creates all sorts of other line work besides One Line Fever. Their art was recognized by high-profile brands like Samsung, Adidas, and Google, who commissioned them for marketing purposes on previous occasions.

As an interactive media designer, Deborah always loves finding new ways to inspire and engage her audience. Recently, she came up with a creative idea for a drawing challenge centered around the theme of magic. She named it Magiktober. And to her surprise, many artists participated.

To kick off the challenge, Deborah created a prompt list filled with magical concepts and characters. Some of the prompts included drawing a spell jar, old ruins, owls, fog and other.

From the first to the last day of October, the graphic designer, motion designer, 3D and frontend developer has drawn 31 adorable illustrations which she posted on her social media.

She is self-taught in illustration and concept art, and she works with digital media as well as traditional ones like watercolor. She enjoys working in teams and alone, and she loves, above all else, coming up with great creative ideas.

Before growing up to become the successful storyboard artist and illustrator she is today, Alex Chiu imagined her creativity would take on different forms.

“I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer, a politician, a children’s book illustrator, a visual development artist,” she recounted in an interview with Concept Art Empire, “until I realized that I was awful at making finished drawings, hahaha! But also that storyboarding was my favorite aspect of the animation pipeline.”

She might be selling herself short. When it comes to animation, Chiu has worked so far for the biggest names in the industry including Marvel Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Netflix. Now working as Director and Story Artist for Warner Bros., Chiu has carved herself a niche, often referencing her love of manga and anime.

In fact, it was her love of manga that would ultimately spark a creative interest, leading her into the field of animation. “I always doodled as a kid according to my parents,” says Chiu. “But I didn’t really pick up the pencil and draw every day with the intention of getting better in some shape or form until I was 10.”

“It all changed when I started reading manga,” she admits, adding that though she considered art as a career when she was in high school it wasn’t until sophomore or junior year of college when she narrowed down her career path. Having developed her skills throughout school and college, she landed on storytelling after experimenting with comics and film.

Currently based in LA, we can’t wait to see more of her work both online and on-screen!

The beauty of pop art is that it can tackle heavy-loaded subjects at ease, engaging the viewer with complicated ideas that otherwise might deter them. Blurring the boundaries between “high” art and “low” culture, noble art and commercial art, pop art also has the ability the speak the language of the “common” man, inviting them into the sacred gallery space.

Case in point: Maria Qamar’s pop art. Inspired by pop art’s wonder boy, Roy Lichtenstein, Qamar adopts comic book iconography to create dramatic portraits of South Asian people that communicate between them through snappy dialogue bubbles.

A first-generation Canadian, Qamar’s mother is Indian and her father is Bangladeshi. The family moved to Canada when she was nine, and Qamar openly talks about the hardships of being an immigrant, which included enduring constant bullying and racism.

Her work is first and foremost aimed at a South Asian audience and is meant to resonate with the Desi community at large, particularly the second generation. “I’m neither here nor there,” said Qamar in an interview with the Cut, relaying her experience as a South Asian millennial. “I’m not either Desi or Western, I’m both.”

This duality is present by her choice of medium, which is influenced by the art of Roy Lichtenstein as well as Indian soap operas. “I’m an extremely emotional person,” says Qamar. “It’s why I gravitate so much towards Indian soap operas. The tears and the crying and the drama in my work is also inspired by Roy Lichtenstein.”

When it comes to animal diversity, Australia is one of the top locations. The fauna of the dry continent consists of a huge variety of animals, and the rich environment also makes for a great backdrop. Sydney-based illustrator Vladimir Stankovic draws inspiration from Australia’s natural surroundings and the final products are incredible.

Did you know that the types of animals found in Australia consist of 83% mammals, 89% reptiles, 90% fish and insects, and 93% amphibians? Using watercolors, colored pencils, and gouache, Stankovic documents Australian wildlife in vivid colors. But there’s a twist. Some of Stankovic’s animals aren’t discovered. Yet, at least.

A combination of real and surreal, his illustrated creatures are at times realistic while other times entirely imagined. His unique style makes it hard to distinguish between the two.

Describing his style as both subtle and bizarre, his work might remind you of vintage scientific illustrations that are colored in a pastel wash. “I grew up reading folk tales and fantasy stories, watching horror movies and TV shows, so I guess it all kind of fused inside my head and is a source of inspiration still,” Stankovic shared with Barrington Stoke.

But his work is also the result of his mindful observations of his natural environment. “The ‘detailedness’ is perhaps the result of hours spent looking at tiny insects and seashell forms and their patterns with a magnifying glass,” notes the illustrator.

And while we might not be traveling due to the pandemic restrictions, Stankovic’s illustrations transfer us into a whole other realm—part Australian, part imagined.
