Youri Mantra is a talented French artist who excels in all art mediums and can successfully work with any subject. But when given the option to choose, Mantra almost always goes with creating large-scale murals of moths, butterflies, and other insects.

However, the way Mantra presents his preferred subjects isn’t always the same. Sometimes his butterflies are closed in glass cases, serving as pieces in a collection of an unnamed butterfly collector. This is possibly the artist’s way of making a point that there is more attention given to lifeless specimens than those that are alive.

Other times, the butterflies are flying free or resting on a flower, hinting at a brighter future and giving a sense of optimism.

But in any of these cases, Mantra’s execution is almost flawless. Each subject is faithful to its live counterpart, from the colorful and vibrant wings down to even the smallest details like antennas and complex wing veins.

Mantra has been spreading his love for insects and nature all over the world in the past years. He has painted murals in France, Germany, Italy, the United States, Mexico, and many other countries that welcomed his impressive pieces. Check out more of his works by scrolling below.

Some street artists will paint on the first plain wall they see. But British artist Jamie Paul Scanlon, better known as JPS, likes to take a different approach. He puts much thought into the location as it usually serves as an integral part of his artworks.

JPS manages to bring together the art and the urban environment that serves as his canvas. As a result, his works always look perfectly placed, and the viewer can immediately figure out why the particular location was picked out. Often, the art itself interacts with objects and buildings that surround it.

“The settings in which I paint my work are very important to me. Everything has a place in my eyes,” JPS shared in a recent interview.

JPS became a well-respected name in the street art world thanks to his original style. His works are diverse and cover many subjects, from pop culture to horror scenes. Occasionally, he also engages in a satirical commentary of the current events, which could be interpreted as a nod to the world’s most famous street artist Banksy. Both artists are from Bristol, and Banksy was actually the reason why JPS even started making street art. Still, this is where their connection ends.

“I do consider my work very different his as I draw my ideas and inspirations from either things I love or sometimes even bad memories from my past,” JPS explains.

Most of JPS’s street art can be found in his hometown of Bristol, but over the years, he also created all over the world, including the United States, Norway, and Germany. Check out more of his works below.

Murals created by talented British graffiti artist Pref can come across as a bunch of random letters and words scattered on walls at first. However, they show their true colors once you really pay attention to all their elements.

Pref’s unique style is characterized by the use of multi-layered typography. He twists the letters, stacks them on top of each other, or hides them beneath strokes to make common words and phrases less obvious. This results in impressive street art that can be rewarding for the viewer in multiple ways.

According to Pref, the wording he uses for his murals has biographical elements while also presenting the viewer with a puzzle they need to solve.

“The wording for my pieces are usually auto-biographical. Like clues and relics from my past, or a commentary on current times,” Pref shares on his website. “What it says and what it looks like, coming together to form a cryptic crossword type puzzle for the viewer to work out.”

Pref, who also does studio and gallery pieces, has created typographic murals all over his native Britain, as well as the United States, Sweden, Australia, and Belgium. He also shares them regularly on his Instagram page. Continue scrolling to check out our favorites.

French-Tunisian street artist eL Seed incorporates traditional Arabic calligraphy into his graffiti art, a style he calls calligraffiti. Using Arabic calligraphy to spread messages of peace and unity, his artwork can be found all over the world, with the aim to unify communities and break stereotypes.

“The best graffiti artists were always doing much more than just writing their names,” reflected the artist in an interview with Savoir Flair. “The really good ones had connections with abstract expressionism, with pop art. They were doing something much bigger.”

According to eL Seed, the really great graffiti artists were much more than just taggers. “And the audience has yet to understand that the best artists could be street artists; street artist and artist are not separate categories.”

Unlike taggers, eL Seed has consciously used his art as a tool of political expression, aiming to spark political change through it. His work, more often than not, underlines his key principles of love, respect, and tolerance. Named a Global Thinker in 2016 by Foreign Policy for his project “Perception” in Cairo, eL Seed has also won the UNESCO Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture in 2017.

“I am a street artist, because I paint in the street. I am a Middle Eastern artist, because I paint in Arabic,” he relayed. “So I’m a Middle Eastern street artist. You always have to prove something. There are several levels of it.”

“My point is to not get rid of that categorization; I know my roots and the roots of my art are the street, and the roots of my art are Arabic, but bringing it to a level where people don’t look at me as only this is the biggest challenge. Step by step, I am trying to work on that.”

Indeed, his work is displayed both in public spaces and exhibitions. Most notably, he has painted on the façade of L’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, on the DMZ in between North and South Korea, in the slums of Cape Town, and in the heart of Cairo’s garbage collectors neighborhood.

Caroline Morin discovered her love for art in her earliest years. However, it was only recently that she started putting her dreams into practice.

In 2016, she started sharing her marvelous talent with the world, bringing humor to the streets with the power of her art. Using street items such as grids, pebbles, cracks on the wall, and much more, Lyon is becoming more vivid and colorful thanks to her.

The France-based Morin said in a statement for Instagram that she thinks she might suffer from pareidolia: a psychological phenomenon where a specific, often meaningful image is perceived in a random or ambiguous visual pattern.

“I love having fun, playing, and seeing life on the bright side,” Morin shared. However, she also expressed her misfortune that people are always in a hurry and can’t enjoy the things that are around them. “People are generally rushing all the time. I love to take my time and look deeply at everything. I observe a lot and notice small details. My brain is always on.”

If you live in Lyon, you can see her artworks in real-time, but if you are coming from the other side of the planet, you can check her creations in the gallery below.

London street artist Lakwena Maciver uses words to impact and shape her environment. Known for her vibrant murals, those often feature empowering quotes and phrases. One mural reads: “Raise Your Hopes” another promises that “The Best Is Yet to Come.” “I think I’ve always used text and typography, even when I was a child,” recalled Maciver in an interview with Huck Magazine. “Words really interested me and I used to draw them a lot.”

“In terms of words that get me through the day, it’d definitely be The Bible – that’s also added to my understanding of the power of words,” she adds. “Naturally, I’m a bit of a pessimist so it helps to meditate on words of truth and encouragement.” According to Maciver, the artistic process itself begins with choosing the right words. “Before I even start painting a wall, I think a lot about the concept and what I want to communicate,” she explains. “I love the colors and the patterns and all that, but that’s almost secondary to what I want to say.”

“I once read this quote [by philosopher Calvin Seerveld] that said as an artist it’s important to ‘fire your art until it emits sparks that warm, or burn, those it reaches.’ And for me that how I see my work and my responsibility as an artist,” she concludes.

Kazakh-Canadian artist Ola Volo is known for her stunning murals, incorporating themes from Eastern European folk art with a focus on pattern and narrative. Her work often depicts fantasy scenes, bringing together animals, people, architecture, and nature to articulate diverse stories rich with symbolism and elaborate forms.

Her work also lends itself often to the public realm with many of her murals helping to shape and beautify outdoor spaces across the world. But she also creates commissions for a wide range of international clients including Starbucks, Louis Vuitton, Lululemon, Simons, and Honda.

“My perspective is murals can bring energy to a space,” she said in an interview with The Georgia Straight. “It wasn’t till I got the opportunity to do a mural that I got to transform a space, and I got hooked! I loved that it was an idea that could be interpreted and reinterpreted every day by people.”

Her work has included neighborhood murals and corporate commissioned work in Vancouver, the Mackey Building in Sudbury as part of 2016 Up Here Festival, and “Walla Volo” in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, the largest mural in Canada painted by a woman.

According to Volo, we are a little bit deprived of accessible public art. Her murals are therefor a “sort of a way to reclaim our city’s energy and perspective and all these blank walls.” “Making work accessible: that’s why I love illustration,” she added. “I’m able to communicate a message that can be read without language barriers. And in some ways I think public art can be responsible for that too.”
