Ben Houtkamp is the artist behind these gorgeous stained glass pieces. He finds inspiration in things from his childhood, such as video games, Pokemon cards, coloring books, Happy Meal toys, and much more. Stained glass is not a new art technique; in fact, it’s been around for centuries. Houtkamp skillfully puts a modern twist to it, using bright colors and geometric shapes.

Houtkamp grew up in an artistic family in Rockford, Illinois. His father Frank used to work with stained glass, too. “I grew up watching him work and hanging out at his studio,” Houtkamp tells Creative Boom. “I’ve always been an artist but I didn’t really consider working with glass until 2019. My dad taught me thoroughly even though I lack his masterful patience.”

As he explains, the process of making stained glass art is not difficult, but getting the details right is the difficult part. His father taught him to be patient and thoughtful with every piece he creates, as that makes all the difference with the final result.

Check out the artist’s Instagram page with over 12k followers if you want to see more of his work. In the meantime, we picked out some of his recent pieces below.

Graphic designer Beatrix Papp drew a series of fun illustrations that show our relationship with our phones. The artist often illustrates scenes from life or draws cute animals, but this illustration series drew our attention.

“We use our phones, tablets, and notebooks everywhere in our lives. I try finding those moments when we can see their ubiquitousness as funny and likable,” she tells Bored Panda

Unlike some other artists who used a similar theme in order to criticize human behavior, Papp tries to find the cute moments that simply show how phones are a normal part of our everyday lives. Still, the result is a bittersweet feeling we get when we realize how far it’s gone—it’s virtually impossible to do anything without a phone anymore, even simple tasks like eating or playing with pets.

Scroll down to see these illustrations and make sure to follow Papp on Instagram for more. She doesn’t have a lot of followers yet, but we’re sure more people are going to discover her very soon.

An English dad who uses the name Hercule Van Wolfwinkle online creates these hilarious, intentionally bad pet portraits. He sells them in an attempt to raise funds for housing the homeless.

The idea for the portraits came to him one day after he drew a quick picture of their family dog as a way to inspire his son to make a thank you card. After he put it up for sale as a joke, he was surprised by the number of offers. Naturally, he had to draw more similar portraits and that’s how it all started.

If you want one of his portraits to decorate your home, the price is not small. It costs £299 (around $385) to buy one, but the money actually goes to charity, not the artist. Turning Tides is a local charity the artist supports. It fights for everyone’s right to have a home, regardless of the challenges they may face at some point in their lives.

If you’re up to do something good today, send him a photo of your pet and you will get a unique portrait in return to always remind you of your good deed.

Knitting all sorts of delicious foods is Kate Jenkins’ favorite thing to do. This artist finds a way to make us appreciate all those delicious treats that aren’t particularly great for our health in a whole new way. Just a heads up: her lifesized pies, bagels, croissants, and other foods may make you crave the real thing.

Jenkins learned how to knit and crochet when she was a little girl. She realized at the age of eight that she was better at “interpreting an idea by creating it in 3d using wool rather than through painting or drawing,” as Brown Paper Bag writes. As she was studying fashion and textile design, she was always on a lookout for different ways to channel her love of wool, textile, and color.

Her Instagram page, devoted to knitted foods, has nearly 30,000 followers who appreciate her art. Follow her if you’d like to see more of her work on a daily basis. Who knows, it may inspire you to give knitting a try and create something amazing yourself!

Thank you so much to @antlerpdx for the opening of “Scale and Bone” last night! The virtual tour of the show is up on their page, and there will be limited opening hours each weekend this coming month if you would like to safely view the show in person (check out their page for details). . . . Over the next few weeks I will be sharing the stories behind the drawings in this series. You can check out the full show on my website (link in profile). . . . In this 34” x 43” piece “Black Pine Snake,” three species of birds that breed in Longleaf Pine forests and use snakeskin to construct their nests raise their young in the skeleton of a Threatened Black Pine Snake. The birds from top to bottom are: Carolina Wren, Great Crested Flycatcher (depicted as a nest and eggs), and Blue Grosbeak. This is one of three drawings in my show “Scale and Bone” that is centered around Longleaf Pine forest species. Longleaf Pine forests once covered 90 million acres in the Southeast, stretching from Virginia to Florida, and west into eastern Texas. Today, only three percent of the original forest remains, lost to hundreds of years of commercial logging, fire suppression, the conversion of forest to urban development and livestock grazing, and the replanting of forests with faster growing species of pine. These rich forests are dominated by their namesake Longleaf Pine, an evergreen conifer that grows 80 to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters) tall and has leaves that can grow up to 18 inches (46 centimeters) long. But there is much more to these forests than Pinus palustris; mature Longleaf Pine savannas can contain up to 40 species of plants, making them one of the most diverse plant communities on the globe. Even in their fragmented state, remaining stands of Longleaf Pine forest harbor almost 200 species of birds and hundreds of animal species. More than 30 of these species are endangered and threatened, including two species of snakes that have been designated as Threatened at the federal level: the Eastern Indigo Snake and Black Pine Snake. Although it has not yet received federal designation, the fate of the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake [continued in comments]

The artist has always been fascinated by snakes “because they elicit such a strong response in so many people,” as she told This is Colossal. Her art is her way to send the message about the destruction of ecosystems and the biodiversity we’re losing. “Through the use of visual narratives that are interjected with surreal and magical elements, I hope to allow the species in my drawings to speak with urgency to the forces causing their decline in this time of human-driven mass extinction,” Keller says.

Her work is currently on display at Antler Gallery in Portland and you available as a virtual tour so you can see it from anywhere in the world. Join 115k other people who follow Keller on Instagram to get updates about her work and enjoy her unique art.

Embroidery is a popular hobby these days, but it wasn’t as popular several years ago when Emillie Ferris started practicing it. She did her best to stitch at least a few rows every day and now she’s incredibly skilled at making stitched butterflies and other insects.

The U.K.-based artist finds inspiration in old entomology illustrations. She carefully reviews each illustration before she starts replicating it with thread. Her art is “inspired by nature, with a tiny sense of magic,” as she tells This is Colossal.

Ferris has 165k followers on Instagram at the moment, and if you’d like her embroideries to make your feed prettier, don’t hesitate to follow her!

The Serbian National Theatre musicians are self-isolated these days just like the rest of the world. But even though they have to sit at their homes, they decided to perform something for all the people out there who’re struggling right now. In Serbia, like in many other countries, cultural events are canceled due to coronavirus outbreak and many artists found themselves without work.

“Many people are losing their jobs, not just artists and musicians, said Aleksandar Stankov, the opera director. “Even worse, some are losing lives, and we’re aware that’s what’s the most important right now. However, even though the whole world is on hold, we still believe we should do what we do best.”

Illustrator Vicki Ling created a new series called Hanging By a String with which she reminds us that modern life is, in fact, pretty fragile.

Ling illustrates catastrophes just waiting to happen if there weren’t for the string that holds them for the time being. Just one slip of the red string would be enough to destroy everything, and that’s the message she wants to get out to the world.

“We can observe society today has achieved a high degree of economic and technological development, yet we are contemporaneously struggling to keep up with the increasingly fast pace and materialistic nature of life,” This is Colossal quotes Ling.

Don’t be surprised if you tear up watching this video of an Italian neighborhood gathering on windows and balconies to sing in the middle of the country lockdown. Millions of people are forced to stay inside due to coronavirus and, being a happy and joyful nation, Italians quickly found a way to make the lockdown more fun and to connect with neighbors even though they can’t leave their homes.

Every night at 6. p.m., as the state announces the number of new coronavirus cases for the previous day, Italians in many cities gather to sing as a sign of protest and a way to boost morale.

Below is a video from the city of Siena that you can watch, but there are many more videos circulating around social media from other places in Italy!

Watch them perform Bella Ciao from their own homes below.
