There’s nothing like having a niche as an artist. The more specific your particular style, the more it can cause consumers to fall in love with you if they identify with that specific style. Perhaps this is why Ian Dominic Alejo has managed to be so successful, with just under 20,000 Instagram followers to boot.

Alejo is a professional animator, and shares his animations with the public on a frequent basis. But his animations aren’t of just anything—he strictly promotes himself as a “Sakuga” animator, calling for all diehard Sakuga fans to flock to his work. If you’re unaware what Sakuga is, it’s a well-known term in the world of anime, especially among the more action-based scenes.

Sakuga used to be a term for all kinds of animation, but it later evolved into the aforementioned action anime niche. It should also be noted that Sakuga tends to apply to animation work or drawings that hold a very high-quality level. In other words, if you’re a Sakuga animator, it means that everyone agrees you’re a serious professional.

For this reason, Alejo deserves all the kudos in the world for furthering his career to the place it is today. He clearly has put in thousands of hours into his craft, and it shows in the quality. Follow him on Instagram if you’d like to see his content more frequently.

We love when video games and art meet together. It allows us to have a fun time while also enjoying great visuals. One game that really embraces this concept is Alphaputt.

Developed by Sennep Games, Alphaputt combines typography and mini golf. The iOS mobile game allows players to go through beautifully designed courses, each based on a single word of the alphabet.

For example, the course for the letter “A” is not only shaped like this letter but also designed as an airport. The course for the letter “B” is a basketball court while the letter “K” is designed to mimic the keytar.

The typography designs are complemented with all sorts of quirky additions that make the levels quite challenging. You will encounter UFOs, bouncing basketballs, fire rings, spinning records, and more features that aim to stop you from getting the golf ball in the hole.

The alphabet theme translates to the way you play the game as well. You can choose to start with the “A” course and make a run throughout the entire alphabet. The second way is to type in a certain word and then play the courses that correspond to the letters that make up that word.

Alphaputt is available on AppleStore for iPhone and iPad devices. Check out all the levels from the game in the video below.

Imagine what would happen if nature decided to take over everything that humans now claim as theirs. If you can’t really wrap your head around this scenario, the works of New York City-based artist Shane Griffin aka Grif might help you.

Grif presented his vision of nature’s takeover through a series of animated clips titled Equinox Collection. The short animations open with peaceful scenery that includes buildings, cars, and paintings. Then, out of the blue, fields of flowers burst from these objects and cover them completely.

According to the artist, these works are meant to show the strength of nature and how its energy will continue to “evolve, reclaim, and transfer” regardless of human presence.

“The Equinox Collection presents surrealist depictions of the everyday as it is overtaken by nature. An invisible catalyst moves through each piece—a transfer of natural energy that pollinates each environment, reimagining it as an expansive floral tapestry,” says Grif about the project.

Grif is a well-known name in the art world. This talented individual works in various mediums, ranging from sculpture to animation and has collaborated with high-profile names like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams while also doing commission work for brands like Apple and Nike.

Before growing up to become the successful storyboard artist and illustrator she is today, Alex Chiu imagined her creativity would take on different forms.

“I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer, a politician, a children’s book illustrator, a visual development artist,” she recounted in an interview with Concept Art Empire, “until I realized that I was awful at making finished drawings, hahaha! But also that storyboarding was my favorite aspect of the animation pipeline.”

She might be selling herself short. When it comes to animation, Chiu has worked so far for the biggest names in the industry including Marvel Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Netflix. Now working as Director and Story Artist for Warner Bros., Chiu has carved herself a niche, often referencing her love of manga and anime.

In fact, it was her love of manga that would ultimately spark a creative interest, leading her into the field of animation. “I always doodled as a kid according to my parents,” says Chiu. “But I didn’t really pick up the pencil and draw every day with the intention of getting better in some shape or form until I was 10.”

“It all changed when I started reading manga,” she admits, adding that though she considered art as a career when she was in high school it wasn’t until sophomore or junior year of college when she narrowed down her career path. Having developed her skills throughout school and college, she landed on storytelling after experimenting with comics and film.

Currently based in LA, we can’t wait to see more of her work both online and on-screen!

There are those who draw, and then there are those who create magic. Nancy Liang belongs to the latter. Her illustrations and short animations might very well put a spell on you. With themes that include houses, the night sky, and plants, her work sparkles and glistens, the sum being greater than its parts.

Based in Sydney, Liang graduated with a Bachelor of Design at UNSW Art and Design and has no formal training in animation. As such, her animation, often experimental, pushes the boundaries of more traditional forms, incorporating mediums like drawing, painting, and paper cutting with digital programs like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Aero, and Processing.

Liang explains that the elements that make each animation piece have all been hand-drawn or handmade frame by frame, which naturally takes a lot of time and patience. Using kraft paper cutouts, she arranges her pieces in the visual form of a diorama “The objects in my work have hundreds of layers down to the shadow under window pane,” she explained once in an interview with Brown Paper Bag.

“For me, everything must be separate. That way I can move or redraw single elements frame by frame rather than create hundreds of finished collages frame by frame”. In order to do so, she draws, cuts, pastes, and shifts all the elements around. “It is a reiterative process,” she admits.

After playing around with the different pieces, she then scans all of her finished layers into the computer, arranges them in Photoshop, and only then proceeds to animate. The end result will most definitely mesmerize you.

Tasha Levytska’s illustrations have a quirky appeal to them. Very much character-driven, her work translates everyday life situations into comical nuggets. “I like to make a good laugh and usually trying to find something funny in the outer world and bring it to my illustrations,” reads Polytechnic’s bio.

Based in Kyiv, Ukraine, Levytska’s work spans web, editorial, advertising, and publishing fields. She also has a passion for small animated gifs. “Most of the time I work in digital because it’s fast,” she relayed in an interview with Ballpitmag. “But I like to try different mediums even though this leads to piles of wasted paper.”

But incredibly enough, when it comes to her illustrations, Levytska is very much self-taught. “I study Biophysics at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute,” she related. “And I’m a self-taught illustrator. I’ve attended short length illustration courses in Kyiv and I hope one day I’ll go to the Arts University to understand I’ve done it wrong all these years,” she jokes.

According to Levytska, her creative process includes much research, which doesn’t come easy. “Usually, I start by searching for the idea,” she explained. “It’s very painful to find more and more new ideas, so I’m trying to help myself and I have a kinda routine for that. I’m reading as much as I can about the topic, making mind maps, loading the information into my brain. And then I switch myself to some monotonic work where I don’t need to think – washing dishes, taking a shower, walking outside. And after 10 minutes my brain gives me a bunch of ideas for the project.”

Japanese artist Hikari Shimoda is clearly inspired by Japanese manga and anime — an inspiration she dates back to being a child. “My father was interested in anime and Manga, and he introduced me to the Studio Ghibli animated movies when I was a child,” she recalled in an interview with We Heart

According to Shimoda, she would copy the drawings and, over time, taught herself how to draw cartoons. “In addition, since I was in high school, I like looking at illustration online — which was very important for me,” she notes. “All these pieces of pop culture are very familiar in my life, ones that give the most impact.”

Her work, both charming and alarming, portrays a world where cuteness and horror coexist, expressing modern-day issues in colorful and illustrative techniques. Often depicting starry-eyed children, Shimoda dresses her characters in superhero costumes, revealing problems and struggles in contemporary society.

“For me, this is my most effective means to convey my emotions and feelings to other people,” says Shimoda, “but they are not ‘human’ children. I like to use the example of magical girls (shojo) because they are inspired by human girls but they are characters.” The result is eerie and detached, albeit increasingly cute.

Naturally, Shimoda’s work tends to create quite a buzz both online and offline. Having held exhibitions in galleries worldwide, including Japan, the United States, Canada, and Europe, she has also amassed more than 95k followers on Instagram. Here are some of our favorite pieces by her:

Gracias a todxs. 💪🏾💖🌎🌍🌏💖💪🏾 #roda #josearoda #joseantonioroda #illo #illustration #ilustracion #dibuix #drawing #coloring #colouring #coloringpages #coronavirus #coronavirusespaña #covid_19 #stayathome #stayhome #staysafe #quedateencasa #yomequedoencasa #titiriteros #home #bettertogether

Indeed, his illustrations are stripped to the bare essentials: organic shapes, primary colors (with the occasional yellow and orange), and playful compositions. But while his pieces are minimalistic in nature, his techniques and mediums allow some room for experimentation, with his work including anything from silk-screen prints, ceramics, and risographs to digital prints and paper cuts.

“I’m an emotional and intuitive person,” says Antonio. “I don’t choose a specific theme to create about, and I don’t plan on transmitting any message with my drawings; I just want to draw nice things.”

“Drawing is like going to therapy,” he adds, “it makes you think, observe and analyze.” According to Antonio, the exercise of drawing – a somewhat meditative process – allows you to grow and move forward. Words of wisdom.

Sam Gainsborough is an animation director who mixes physical animation with digital techniques to create a tactile and hand-made look. The London-based artist’s newest mixed-media film called Facing It shows a man struggling with life.

The relationships with his family and friends, social anxiety, and his fear of being rejected from the people that surround him are manifested by contorts, melting, rippling, dripping, and swirling clay faces on human bodies. To make the faces, which were roughly double life-size, the creators used more than 1,100 pounds of plasticine.

“When making this film, it was really important to me that you could see the fingerprints, and even more than that, each drip of the film is the size of a thumb that kind of tactile filmmaking is something I really wanted to incorporate,” the artist shared on Vimeo. “Making this film just made me really excited about future possibilities. I feel like this was such a leap into the unknown that really got my mind going with other crazy things we can do.”

Sophy Hollington’s unique illustrations fuze together the old and the new – a sort of reinterpretation of vintage aesthetics. Inspired by folklore and alchemical symbolism, she creates stunning relief prints by using the intricate process of lino-cutting. But it’s her recent project which caught our attention.

A collaboration between Hollington and writer David Keenan, she illustrated a tarot deck, which accompanied Keenan’s novella, To Run Wild In It. The experimental story was loosely based around the cards, with each chapter being named after a card.

“Every time I finished a card I’d send it to David and he’d come back with a really in-depth interpretation of the art, picking out things I’d not even realized were there,” Hollington shared with It’s Nice That, talking about the creative process taking place behind the scenes.

Hollington anchored her work around these chapters, with the result being the Autonomic Tarot which she now sells in her online shop. “I wasn’t clued up about tarot or it’s users before starting this, so it’s been wonderful to see our deck embraced by that community,” she went on to say. “I’ve heard it really works.”
