There are many reasons why we keep journals. From travel and dream journals to food diaries, a journal is a great way to document the different aspects of our life. Keeping a diary also has health benefits. A recent study showed that journal writers demonstrate a more vigorous antibody response to bacteria and viruses and produced less cortisol, a stress hormone.

But keeping a journal doesn’t necessarily mean putting pen to paper. For Pearada Unahalekhaka (Cheepsatayakorn), diary keeping means something else altogether. An avid traveler (at least when traveling is permitted), Unahalekhaka describes herself as “visual storyteller”—documenting the world around her with the aid of watercolors rather than words.

Born in Bangkok, Unahalekhaka has lived in New York City and Hong Kong, but her travels have taken her anywhere from San Francisco to Thailand. Her small watercolor paintings (Unahalekhaka carries a sketchbook with her at all times) offer snippets from those travels, which she then shares on Instagram. “Traveling is my way of life,” says Unahalekhaka. “It’s how I find inspiration, and my favorite way to capture the moment is to sketch.”

With an affinity to art and aesthetics in general, Unahalekhaka studied architecture as an undergraduate, and is also a graduate of Columbia University with Masters in Strategic Communications. “I discovered my true passions in strategy and illustration while living in New York City,” she notes. “I combine eight years of work experience in the branding and advertising industries with my study in architecture and my passion in illustration to implement design strategy and create designs that speak to the audience.”

Her favorite places to visit when she isn’t working? Big cities. “I love positive energy and inspirations I get from fast-paced cities,” says the illustrator. “I can’t really stay still.” Her visual stories might just inspire you to start a diary (visual or otherwise) yourself.

Architect turned illustrator Vasco Mourão describes his technique as “obsessive drawing”, with his practice focused on the representation of cities through drawings on paper, wood, stone, and metal.

Sticking exclusively to a black pen, Mourão’s work inhabits a place between fine art and illustration. Relying on his background in architecture, Mourão deconstructs and then reconstructs whole cityscapes, with his architectural meanderings occupying anything from canvas to large scale murals.

According to Mourã, his work explores the perception of the urban landscape through memory (fragmented, subjective, and personal). Recent works include a limited edition series of Tokyo’s lights—a detailed if chaotic representation of Tokyo’s neon signs, storefronts, and typography.

With his work so detail-oriented (Mourão uses the word “obsessive” for a reason), his artistic practice relies on structure and perseverance. “For me, it is all about regularity,” stressed Mourão in an interview with Creative Mornings. “What I have to do is find the time every day to sit and draw. That’s really important to me.”

Originally from Portugal and now based in Barcelona, Mourão’s pracitce include daily drawings. “I try do this with my almost-daily drawings project in which I do a small drawing each day,” he says.

“It works well because it’s easy to share. Also, when I draw fifteen drawings in a row, they all seem a bit similar but maybe number 13 and number 9 have something I didn’t see in any of my drawings and I can then develop that idea. To push the work forward I uncover something of interest to me and that only comes when I am drawing. So, I just need to be more consistent and keep up the ritual. Everyday. Music, pen and paper.”

His hard work seems to have paid off, with selected clients and collaborators including brands and publications like Apple, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Museu Picasso Barcelona. Scroll down to see some of his recent work.

Over the past few months, things have felt far from normal. Businesses and places of recreation have been closed, but they’re just starting to open back up. Movie theaters, malls, gyms, parks, and restaurants are slowly opening their doors while following social distancing guidelines. Even though places are opening back up, people are still concerned about contracting the virus.

With the rules and regulations constantly changing, sometimes it’s important to get creative to make people feel safe. Maison Saigon, a Vietnamese restaurant in Thailand, decided to make sure its customers keep a safe distance from each other. Their solution is a bit out of the ordinary, but none the less, it’s adorable—pandas!

The restaurant placed plush pandas at the tables to keep people at safe distances. These pandas will even keep you company if you don’t like eating alone. The pandas are making sure everyone stays protected from the coronavirus.

Would you like to eat your dinner with plush pandas?

Check out more of the photos from the Maison Saigon’s Instagram page.

At the core of Caro Arevalo’s art is repetition, symmetry, and balance. A visionary artist from Peru living and working in Brooklyn NY, her heritage plays a major role in her work, as well as her connection with mother earth. The end result is both beautiful and mystical, inviting man to rekindle his connection with the natural world.

“The usage of pointillism, metallic appearances, sacred geometry and meditative flow guide my expedition towards creating my own galaxy,” explains Arevalo on her website. Most of her paintings are organized around the traditional mandala (circle in Sanskrit) — a shape imbued in symbolism that is understood as a spiritual tool.

“I’ve started to paint the evolution of different species and as I mostly work with the mandalic shape,” Arevalo further explained in an interview with the DUFMOD blog. “I use the mandala’s different orbits to represent the evolution of organisms as the mandala keeps on growing, as an eternal evolving spiral.”

According to Arevalo, through her Amazonian heritage, she embraces the importance of rituals and ancestral wisdom. Those teach her that by observing nature one can notice that there is no real separateness and the whole universe is connected as a one. Techniques such as finite subdivision rules, cartography, acuity enhancement, and symmetrical repetition are the building blocks of Arevalo’s work which, according to her, also have a meditative quality.

“For me the best way to keep on growing and making things happen is by focusing on what you have today,” says Arevalo, “using those tools in your advantage and make the best out of it. If you don’t have an art studio start on the floor next to your bed or the kitchen table.”

Murmure is a team of two artists from France, Paul Ressencourt and Simon Roche, who want to raise awareness of environmental problems by illustrating how trash bags affect people’s and animals’ lives. They’re not trying to be subtle at all; instead, their art is straightforward and aims to show how directly our bad habits impact the world around us.

“The main idea was to play with the colors of a regular black garbage bag as much as possible,” Colossal quotes the team. “Not only for dramatic appeal, but also for the depth of shades and, somehow, the elegance of its texture and reaction to light.” In order to achieve this, they use graphite pencils.

They create art on different mediums, from paper to walls, but the message is always the same. Scroll down to see it.

Let’s face it, we could all use a little encouragement, and if it comes neatly packaged, all the better. Minneapolis-based illustrator (but she’s really more of a modern-day preacher) Jena Holliday, shares uplifting messages through minimalistic illustrations and quotes. “Love the messy, unedited, broken, in progress parts of you,” reads one handwritten message over pastel pink background. “You can do brave things,” promises another.

According to Holliday, her messages are aimed at other women, encouraging them to tap into what she calls their “God-given gifts.” And with an impressive following on Instagram, women (and men), are clearly tapping in.

“From a young age, I would sketch comic strips and draw people,” recalled Holliday in an interview with Freelance Wisdom, describing her creative upbringing. “I never took it too seriously until after I finished college with a degree in marketing,” she notes. “I decided that I wasn’t really doing what I loved to do, and then after the birth of my first child, I got an insane passion to go for what I always dreamed of.”

Art started taking root again in her heart, and Holliday listened. “I started sketching illustrations and sharing them online,” she says. “At a really wild time, I was pregnant with my second child, I decided to take the leap to freelance and it’s been a thrilling, fulfilling, and adventurous ride,” she adds.

You’d want to join her ride:

Millions of people are forced to stay inside due to coronavirus and, being a happy and joyful nation, Italians quickly found a way to make the lockdown more fun and to connect with neighbors even though they can’t leave their homes.

Every night at 6. p.m., as the state announces the number of new coronavirus cases for the previous day, Italians in many cities gather to sing as a sign of protest and a way to boost morale.

Every night at 6. p.m., as the state announces the number of new coronavirus cases for the previous day, Italians in many cities gather to sing as a sign of protest and a way to boost morale.
