There’s something truly magical about Dutch art, and living in Amsterdam isn’t stopping Emi Hazlett from being wowed by it every day. This paper artist decided to immortalize her love for Dutch architecture by creating 3D paper cutouts inspired by some of the most beautiful buildings in her hometown.

Hazlett is a professional designer, with ten years of experience under her belt. She now specializes in crafting different objects, scenes, and scenarios out of paper, but how did she decide to pursue this creative calling?

“Over the first lockdown she decided to make the house she could see from her window out of paper, and the love for recreating buildings was born. Her biggest passion is the tiny details, along with the knowledge that she can create something completely unique for someone,” she explains on her official website Paper Emi.

Like her very first paper cutout, Hazlett’s art is mostly inspired by Dutch architecture, with a special focus on the canal houses surrounding her home in Amsterdam.

Her process is pretty complex, and it starts with photographing the buildings, before designing each one digitally. Once that’s done, she cuts the paper on her plotter before folding it to shape and assembling each of her paper buildings by hand, making sure to use high-quality textured paper each time.

We don’t blame you for thinking that most bats look the same. And they kind of do from afar. But the truth is that there are many different bat species out there, with each having its unique features and characteristics.

Paper artist Juan Nicolás Elizalde was fascinated with the features that distinguish one bat species from another, perhaps similar, one. This includes the difference in facial features, fur, the shape of the ears, and much more. This inspired him to start an intriguing series of paper sculptures called “Amiguitos de la oscuridad,” which translates to “Little Friends of Darkness.”

The series saw Elizalde creating paper busts for 88 different bat species, including Borneo roundleaf bat and Tube-lipped nectar bat. The artist is now sharing them on Instagram while adding some info about every one of them in the caption. This added an educational dimension to his works on top of the artistic one.

“The project is called Little Friends of Darkness because they are nocturnal animals that I want to be friends with, but also because they helped me to spend the nights of the last few strange and dark years, with a little anxiety about what was happening,” Elizalde explained the story behind his sculptures.

While flower bouquets are a great and rather easy way to add a pop of color to your home, the downside of flowers are plenty and include: allergies, maintenance, and an early unfortunate death. Botanical artist Emily Paluska is here to help us out.

Known for her vibrant paper flowers, Paluska believes in the value of one-of-a-kind pieces made by hand rather than mass-produced objects. The owner of Revery Paper Flora, her paper flowers are a great addition to any home without the tackiness we often equate with artificial flowers.

“I found my style through a lot of practice,” Paluska shared in an interview with Paper Talk. “I make a lot of my flowers over a hundred times and through all those renditions, they evolve into something better, not just because of the practice but I am able to see it more clearly.”

Realism and color are two important criteria. “Color has also become integral to my achieving realism,” says Paluska. “For the majority of my custom projects, I will always start with white paper so I can achieve the exact shade necessary.”

Based in Washington, DC, Paluska first discovered a love of paper flowers when she was a young mother in search of a creative outlet. “I was never a crafty or DIY type of person so I’m not sure why I thought doing something like this would be fun,” she admits

“I found them appealing initially because I hated spending money on fresh flowers and thought paper flowers would be a fun alternative for me to have flowers around my home that I wouldn’t have to take care of.”

The end result, situated at the meeting point between nature and paper, is both realistic and artistic. You’d want to check her out.

One could say Bovey Lee was born into art. Born in Hong Kong, she began practicing Chinese calligraphy at the age of ten, moving on to study painting and drawing in her formative years, and then completing her BA degree in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Having moved to the US in 1993, she earned her first Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequently, she earned a second MFA in Digital Arts at Pratt Institute in New York.

Currently based in LA, these past decades have seen Lee focusing on paper cut art. Using a knife as a drawing tool, she creates her work on Xuan (rice) paper, which in turn reflects her Chinese heritage and those early encounters with art-making, which began with Chinese calligraphy, painting, and drawing.

“Rice paper is particularly special to me because it’s the first art material I used since age 10 when I practiced Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting,” she relayed once in an interview with the Chinese Cultural Studies Center. “Chinese invented paper so I also feel a sense of cultural significance and relevance in using it in my work.”

“My cut paper explores the tension and contradiction between our obsession with urbanism and desire for nature,” she further explains on her website. “My cut paper practice is also a nod to my ancestral roots, and is very much informed by traditional Chinese paper cutting.”

According to Lee, historically, paper cutting was a pastime done communally by generations of women in China. The works, which were often created in multiples at the same time, responded to the women’s everyday lives and often depicted images of farm and village life.

With a following of over 30,000 on Instagram and fine art commissions and installations for clients such as big as Allbirds, Estée Lauder, and Marriott International, husband-and-wife creative team JUDiTH+ROLFE understand the ins and outs of paper manipulation.

Using traditional quilling techniques (but with an added twist), they’re known for their paper flowers which translate their natural surroundings into paper form. But incredibly enough, the two have zero training when it comes to paper art, with their backgrounds in architecture and interior design.

“I’ve only been creating paper art since 2016,” relayed Judith in an interview with Pendulum Magazine, “and still don’t feel entirely comfortable referring to myself as an ‘artist’. Rolfe doesn’t paper-craft, he’s my behind-the-scenes guy, helping out with backstage stuff.”

Aside from their floral pieces, other themes in their work include architecture, geometry, and typography. “My preferred process is to make unmounted pieces, meaning the paper strips are glued to each other but not glued down to a substrate,” she explains, sharing the creative process.

According to Judith, the most challenging part of the process is gluing the freestanding paper elements down to the background material, especially for the geometric work where everything needs to be precise and aligned. “My favourite part of working with paper is when I get into the flow state and am fully immersed in the work,” she notes, adding that the repetitive nature of cutting, shaping, and gluing paper becomes meditative and enjoyable.

French artists Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann (aka Zim & Zou) make detailed props and installations entirely out of paper. Anchored in craftsmanship, they create all the elements composing their installations by hand, from drawing to cutting and assembling. The end piece, most often than not has a nostalgic flair to it (see for instance their Back to Basics series where they pay homage to the forgotten technologies of the 80s and 90s).

Having met during their graphic design studies, the two were instantly drawn to the more tangible materials, rather than computer-based designs. “We decided to use paper in many of our projects because not only is it a basic material, accessible for everyone, but because it’s a way to show the balance of power between digital and paper production,” the creative duo explained in an interview with Don’t Panic. “When today you can read a book on a screen, we needed to create ‘real’ things.”

After experimenting first with other materials such as wood, thread, and textile, they hit the jackpot with one of the more basic of materials—paper. “The aspect of craftsmanship is really important for us and paper gives us an infinite amount of possibilities,” explain Zim & Zou. According to the pair, paper allows for easy manipulation that can give rise to intricate and colorful sculptures. But paper also provides a source of inspiration for its infinite range of colors and unique textures.

“It’s very important for us when using paper to be very careful about recycling and waste,” they note. “That’s why since we started to work together we decided to keep all the scraps so later we’ll make an installation using all those different random shapes. A way to transform waste into art.” As the flat paper sheets are manipulated to create volume, an homage to the ephemeral material takes shape.

There’s a hypnotic quality to Amy Genser’s art. Made primarily of paper, Genser treats paper as a pigment, as she rolls and cuts tiny pieces of colored paper which she then organizes in geometrical shapes. The end result often reminds of a birds-eye view of an ocean or a body of water, as the paper swirls around in colorful formations.

According to Genser, her fascination with paper dates back to her Graphic Design studies, when she took a paper-making class at the Rhode Island School of Design. “I started to play around with paper sculpturally in graduate school,” she recalled in an interview with All Things Paper. “I fell in love with the medium.”

Her sources of inspiration are—quite naturally—the natural world. Genser admits she’s drawn to things like the flow of water, the shape of beehives, and the organic irregularity of plants, flowers, rock formations, barnacles, moss, and seaweed.

“The rolling and cutting process is actually pretty quick,” she explained in the interview. “It’s the composition/editing process that usually takes the longest,” she admits. Painting the surface (either canvas or paper) first, using acrylic and gel medium, she then places her paper pieces on top and manipulates them until she has a satisfactory composition. “It’s like putting a puzzle together, only I don’t know the final picture until I see it,” she admits.

“I roll my pieces accordingly as I develop and build the piece. It’s a back-and-forth process. The paper and the piece lay on different tables in my studio. I attach the paper onto the canvas with PVA once I have the pieces where I want them.”

Take a look at some of her incredible pieces in the gallery below and follow her Instagram page for more.

When it comes to paper manipulation, Jacky Cheng is an undeniable master. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, her work is highly influenced by her elders’ cultural practices and duties performed for Chinese Ritual purposes. Based in Australia since 2006, Cheng is still very much in dialogue with her Chinese heritage, questioning the notions of “home” and “belonging” through her medium of choice.

According to Cheng, her chosen materials are of the utmost importance when it comes to delivering her message. “The process could mean that I take tiny, little pieces of paper, and I glue the bottom, and stick them on to each other, and I cut around it or vice versa,” she relayed in an interview with Arctic Paper. Piece-by-piece, the artwork grows until a pattern is discerned. Through it, her history and tradition is kept alive.

“I’m afraid that I will disconnect with my culture one day, and I don’t want to,” she admitted. “One of the aspects to preventing that is to keep making the artwork that I do.” Cheng further explained that her significant concern is about correlating and weaving narratives from her native experiences whilst mapping the esoteric and social relationships of her origins and her newfound home, environment, and social surroundings—a lot of weight to carry on one small piece of paper.

According to Cheng, her love of paperart is tied to her grandmother’s practice, using an ancient Chinese art form where you stack and fold paper made of bamboo, and then burn it as a sacrifice to ancestors and gods. “My grandmother would fold and fold, and then she would cut it and a little Chinese character appeared,” she recalls. “It’s a lost art, since no one figured out how she did it. I do regret that I don’t know how to create them, but I’m very glad that I got that experience from my grandmother.”

Art duo Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker (aka Hari & Deepti) describe themselves as cloud chasers and paper cut artists. Undeniable experts of all things paper, they create dreamlike settings that employ light and shadows.

“Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium,” they write on their website. “It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it into something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”

Drawn towards the imaginative aspect of storytelling, the duo believes that paper is a great medium to reflect the many shades and depths a good story contains. To that, they add light, creating paper cut shadow boxes assembled in wooden boxes. Their back-lit light boxes incorporate flexible LED strip lights, making the end result really pop.

It’s an art form that relies on the dichotomy between light and dark. “What amazes us about the paper cut light boxes are the dichotomy of the piece in its lit and unlit state, the contrast is so stark that it has this mystical effect on the viewers,” they explain.

With more than 60k followers on Instagram, you’d want to join in the hype:

Using an x-acto knife Harrison carefully cuts her creations out of paper. These intricate, unique patterns are then transformed into a variety of fun lasercut housewares, that are sometimes made of paper, and sometimes wood. Her brand, Light & Paper, has its own online store, but can also be found in a variety of brick and mortar locations.

“My most popular paper cutting piece is definitely my anatomical heart,” remarked Harrison in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I think people really connect with that iconic image, and I’ve tried to make it in my own aesthetic with the repeating patterns that I use.”

And when it comes to inspiration, Harrison has plenty to draw from. “I have definitely researched historical paper cutting and looked into other artists that inspire me,” she says, adding that she tries not to confine her inspiration to just paper cutting. “I find that I’m inspired by many different types of artwork, and that helps me form unique new ideas,” she says.

“I also get really inspired by my own maker community,” adds Harrison. “I have a studio in an industrial building in the West End of Toronto that I share with another local maker. We host monthly meetings with other Toronto creatives; that’s been really helpful and inspiring, brainstorming and developing ideas together and keeping each other on track.”
