Those walking into artist Stephanie H. Shih’s studio would think they just entered a well-stocked pantry. There are bags of flour, packages of cheese, soy sauce bottles, and cans of soda sitting on the shelves or the floor. The only difference is that these grocery items are actually made of ceramics.

For years, the U.S.-born artist has been using her ceramic skills to craft all sorts of packaged food and other pantry staples. Her works are inspired by her Taiwanese heritage and are meant to explore “the way cultural identities transform as they migrate with a diaspora.”

Shih’s ceramic objects are known around the world and beloved in America, but they stand out as an important part of the everyday lives of Asians living abroad.

“She replicates everyday objects that reflect traces of colonization, emigration, assimilation, and cultural interchange within the lives of Asian immigrants and their children,” it says in the artist’s statement posted on her official website.

The ceramic grocery items created by Shih have received recognition from the art world and have been honored by various cultural institutions. They were also exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions. You can currently check out some of her creations at the Syracuse University Art Museum or by checking out her official social media profiles and website.

Most artists search for perfection in their works. But ceramic artist Nastia Calaca is taking a different approach. She is not only tolerating the imperfections but also embracing them.

Calaca creates various unique and eye-catching ceramic pieces, including figurines, plates, and dishware. However, her most popular creations are animal sculptures that are slightly different than the real-life specimens they are inspired by.

For example, the octopuses she makes are bubbly, the lions have flat faces and short legs, and crocodiles are presented as walking like humans and dressed in a suit.

Despite not being what you expect, Calaca’s animals are adorable in their own way. The more you look at them, the more quirky details you discover about them. And they are truly one-of-a-kind because the artist never replicates her works.

“Even the copies I make on-demand are different from the original, they have mood and character of their own; some gain a wee bit of weight, some get a few new charming little wrinkles, and each of them hopes to be loved and cared for by their new owners,“ she explains.

Calaca’s animal sculptures are available on her official Etsy shop and website. You can also follow her newest creations on Instagram.

Ghost ceramics are a unique and fascinating art form that has gained popularity in recent years. One artist in particular, a woman named Lisa Agnetun, has made a name for herself in the world of ghost ceramics.

Agnetun has always been drawn to the art of ceramics. She was drawn to the medium because of its versatility and the endless possibilities it offered for creativity.

Her ghost ceramics are truly one-of-a-kind. She uses traditional ceramic techniques to create pieces that are both haunting and beautiful. Each piece is handcrafted and carefully glazed to give it a unique appearance.

One of her most popular pieces is a series of ghostly figurines. These figures are small and delicate and designed to look adorable.

In addition to her figurines, she also creates larger, more complex pieces, such as ghostly vases and lamps. These pieces are crafted with the same attention to detail and ethereal quality as her figurines, and are equally as popular with collectors.

Christine Tenenholtz is a ceramic artist who creates vessels that can brighten up any space. She achieves this by incorporating joyful rainbow patterns in each of her pieces.

According to Tenenholtz, she had a creative itch since early childhood but didn’t get interested in ceramics until graduating from college. After attending one ceramics class, she became captivated by the possibilities that clay offered her in a creative sense and never looked back.

For the past three decades, Tenenholtz has been creating ceramic vessels, vases, and all sorts of other ceramic pieces. She developed a distinct style, which made her recognizable in the ceramics community and among ceramics enthusiasts.

“I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life devoted to this craft and finding ways to support myself in these endeavors,” Tenenholtz shares. “What a fun and seat of the pants lifestyle! But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Tenenholtz adds that she gets inspired by different things for her ceramics creations but always tends to the elements of her signature style. This allows her to avoid being repetitive while making the work instantly recognizable at the same time.

Zemer Peled finds beauty in broken shards of porcelain. Her work, based on deconstruction and then reconstruction, is formed from thousands of porcelain shards constructed into sculptures (of varying sizes and shapes) and installations. The end result often takes after the natural world, reminding us of organic forms such as coral and flowers.

“I’m constantly inspired by nature, traveling, and hiking,” she shared in an interview with Sarah K. Benning, where she talked about her creative process. “The first place I go when I visit somewhere new is the botanical gardens. I love gardens, national parks, and taking in huge landscapes – Joshua Tree is my favorite place I found this past year.”

Born and raised in Israel, Peled earned her MA at the Royal College of Art (UK). In recent years, her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Sotheby’s, Saatchi Gallery (London), and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City), and she has also been featured in Vogue, O Magazine, and Elle, amongst other international publications.

But she’s also amassed an impressive following online, with almost 65,000 fans on Instagram alone. “The internet is an incredible tool for artists – especially with things like Instagram because it’s so visual,” notes Peled. “Through it I’ve been able to meet new people and get to see and learn about so many new artists. And not just artists – Instagram makes it possible for people in all kinds of fields to visually show their passion – I love looking at not only artists but also accounts of archaeologists, scientists, national parks etc. for inspiration.”

Peled’s work is also found in many private collections around the world and museum collections, such as the Fuller Craft Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. But you can also purchase her pieces for yourself through her website.

Judi Tavill’s ceramic creations take after corals — in terms of their shape and texture. Her creative process is long and involved and requires both planning and improvisation. “Using a personal visual vocabulary, I explore life’s richness and fragility,” she writes on her website, “focusing on the interplay between deeply carved lines of undulating curves and rich hand texturing that pierces and prods through the clay’s surface.” This process involves building from the inside out while developing its surface from the outside in.

Born in 1968 in Baltimore, MD, Tavill received her BFA in Fashion Design from the Washington University in Saint Louis in 1990 and achieved success as a fashion and textile print designer before pursuing her art interests. After delving into various mediums, she found clay in 2003.

Her creations are inspired by both natural and man-made forms. “I absolutely am inspired by nature as well as architecture, design, and culture,” she shared in an interview with Monmouth Arts. “I work to abstract what I am inspired by and incorporate form or color or construction in my work without necessarily creating a direct reference.”

According to Tavill, her coral texture-looking work was actually inspired by looking at other forms of nature and creating texture with various tools. This experimentation with texture ended up creating such distinct sculptures. “It was at that point that I rode the wave (no pun intended) to see where that texture took the work,” she says.

Based on the oceanic shore of New Jersey, Tavill has traveled around the country to lead demonstration and hands-on workshops as well as having taught locally and volunteering to work with special needs students. But you can also follow her work online, via Instagram.

When it comes to his pottery, Jon Almeda takes it to the next level. In his case, it means shrinking his work down to a miniature scale. Raised in Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest, Almeda finds his inspiration in the ever-changing cloud formations in the sky and the movement of the tides. Those also perform as a backdrop to his work, as most of his practice is carried out in the great outdoors.

In response to his love of nature, Almeda created his own small portable pottery wheel to take out on location and create pieces outside in the open air – a practice known as plein air pottery. According to his website, his practice is a response to the colors, energies, textures, and composition found in nature: the cool dark waters and tall evergreens of the Pacific Northwest and the luscious flora and textures of the ocean in Hawaii.

A self-taught artist, his craft was learned through trial and error. After years of creating large scale pieces with a “bigger is better” mentality, he switched gears when coming across a book called “Creating Ceramic Miniatures”. Challenging himself, he soon discovered that working small was much harder then he imagined. He tested different clay bodies, made his own tools, and tried new techniques to improve the detail of each new piece.

After 17 years of creating miniatures, Almeda is still challenging himself to improve and to try new things with each kiln load. His challenges now include a change of scenery, as he shares videos of him enjoying a sunset near the water, while creating his miniature works. But Almeda’s pieces are impressive even without context, and look exactly like their larger counterpart in detail and proportion. His glazes are varied and rich and each piece is truly a one of kind. Jasmine Little’s art is a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Based in Colorado, she shifts constantly between sculpting and painting, working with ceramics as well as canvases. But it’s her recent project which has really caught our attention.

In it, she carved cylindrical stoneware vessels with iconography, reminiscent of ancient artifacts of a long-lost civilization. Her inspiration for her creations varied from Flemish and Renaissance paintings and medieval illuminated manuscripts to Safavid period carpets, Japanese woodblock prints, Greek black-figure, and red-figure pottery.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6J_mm7l_Dg/

But though her art seems to be out of time and out of place, her goal is for it to communicate with others. “I am very sentimental, but I want my work to be open and have more entry points and interpretations,” she told Art of Choice. “That’s more what I am doing now in both my paintings and sculptures.”

Talking about how she balances between ceramics and painting, Little added: “For me, I get a bit stir crazy so bouncing between the two mediums helps break up my time. Typically I will work in one medium for a period of months and then switch, with that amount of time you can sort of get somewhere with something, and also get to the point where you are yearning for the other thing and start to build anticipation for the shift.”

Scrolling through Valesca van Waveren’s portfolio, some obvious themes are constant throughout her work, mainly: flora, and fauna. Based in Amsterdam, she works as an illustrator and surface pattern designer full time, but is also an avid ceramist and maintains a Prints and Ceramics Shop.

But whatever she does, she makes sure her work is informed by her love of nature. “It is important for me to surround myself with flowers and plants,” she once told the Flow blog, explaining that being surrounded by plants makes you kinder to yourself, your home, and to nature.

“And it doesn’t have to be an expensive treat either,” she stresses, adding that “you can often buy just two or three tall, elegant blooms or even pick yourself a wild bouquet from the roadside. You can also adopt unwanted plants that people have left out on the street, or get them through an online marketplace. And how about taking cuttings from the plants you already own – have you ever tried that?”

But even if you don’t adopt unwanted plants, you can still admire her work via Instagram, which helps to promote kindness towards nature just as well. Take a look at some highlights from her feed:

Louise Daneels treats everyday items as objects containing memory – tangible creations that she wants to recreate, observe, and cherish. Her ceramic sculptures do just that with the aim to discover the “poetic aura” these items may contain.

Anything from toothbrushes to a calculator is recreated using clay. “Objects are memories, we are able to have a conversation with them,” she explained the thought process behind her work. “By being the archeologist of my own memories, I tried to bring the memories back to life in ceramic sculptures.”

Completely self-taught in sculpting, she learned how to use clay through YouTube tutorials, whilst completing a master’s degree in illustration at KASK School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. But she admits to being drawn to ceramics from a much younger age while watching her grandmother make porcelain dolls.

“The work wants to connect to people because it was grown out of the most ordinary everyday surroundings,” she explains. “The automatic interaction with its audience brings up a memory-game of associations and stories. So we can discover the poetic aura they contain from the inside.”
