]]>“I will look for you, I will find you, and I will post you,” this is how the creator of Ugly Dutch Houses describes its goal. The Instagram account was created as an online project to show that not everything in The Netherlands is beautiful and that some things have to change and get a makeover. Because there isn’t an available beauty filter for ugly buildings, right?
Although the page has reached more than 2,000 followers, there are images of buildings that are worth checking out, and pressing the “follow” button. Because we are sure that, in a matter of time, the Ugly Dutch Houses will blossom just like his Irish and Belgium cousins, who also share images of unpleasant buildings.
If you’re interested to see some ugliness check out the gallery below. We assure you there isn’t anything beautiful to see here.

]]>Sack’s drawings usually depict metropolises packed with imposing buildings, spectacular maze-like streets, and other monumental presentations of urban spaces. Some are inspired by the real cities and architecture from the world, while others are a product of the artist’s imagination and contain abstract, fantasy, or dystopian elements.
It also isn’t rare for Sack to combine reality and fiction, creating a new “personal universe”, as he puts it in a recent interview.
“For me, buildings become literal building blocks, similar to cells and atoms, that as a whole, employed ad infinitum, spell out a cosmos,” Sack tells Voyage Houston.
Sack applies this to his creative process as well. Most of his drawings begin with a single landmark or a structure. He then develops his metropolis from that point, adding buildings, streets, and other constructions.
Over the years, Sack exhibited his works in galleries around the world while having artist residencies in Virginia, Italy, and on the cruise ship MS Amsterdam. He also frequently shares his new drawings on Instagram. Check out more of them below.

]]>Sticking exclusively to a black pen, Mourão’s work inhabits a place between fine art and illustration. Relying on his background in architecture, Mourão deconstructs and then reconstructs whole cityscapes, with his architectural meanderings occupying anything from canvas to large scale murals.
According to Mourã, his work explores the perception of the urban landscape through memory (fragmented, subjective, and personal). Recent works include a limited edition series of Tokyo’s lights—a detailed if chaotic representation of Tokyo’s neon signs, storefronts, and typography.
With his work so detail-oriented (Mourão uses the word “obsessive” for a reason), his artistic practice relies on structure and perseverance. “For me, it is all about regularity,” stressed Mourão in an interview with Creative Mornings. “What I have to do is find the time every day to sit and draw. That’s really important to me.”
Originally from Portugal and now based in Barcelona, Mourão’s pracitce include daily drawings. “I try do this with my almost-daily drawings project in which I do a small drawing each day,” he says.
“It works well because it’s easy to share. Also, when I draw fifteen drawings in a row, they all seem a bit similar but maybe number 13 and number 9 have something I didn’t see in any of my drawings and I can then develop that idea. To push the work forward I uncover something of interest to me and that only comes when I am drawing. So, I just need to be more consistent and keep up the ritual. Everyday. Music, pen and paper.”
His hard work seems to have paid off, with selected clients and collaborators including brands and publications like Apple, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Museu Picasso Barcelona. Scroll down to see some of his recent work.

]]>The post Let There Be Light (and Darkness): Scott Tulay’s Dynamic Drawings appeared first on 5dwallpaper.com.
]]>Which makes sense judging by Tulay’s extensive background in architecture. Having first received training in drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Tulay would later graduate from M.I.T. with a Master’s of Architecture degree.
But his interest in art brought him back to the drawing table. By referencing architecture and nature, Tulay engages the viewer by layering dimensional space. The drawings made of ink, charcoal, and watercolor tend to stick to a black, white, and gray palette, which serves to highlight his clever play with shadows and light.
“Whether inspired by built form or natural context, my art is constructed by an armature of light,” he writes on his website. “Light, or what looks like atmosphere or fog, is engaged in either defining space or dematerializing the landscape or architectural elements depicted.”
According to Tulay, this treatment of light, combined with an unclear relationship of the viewer’s place in relation to the ground plane, creates a spatial disconnect with an ambiguity of depth and motion. “In other words,” he explains, “in some drawings the viewer appears to be floating and is looking both up and down at the same time.”
It may be a disorienting feeling, but certainly one you’d want to explore!

]]>One particular structure is an architectural wonder. Located in Taipei, Taiwan, the Tao Zhu Yin Yuan structure is a sight to behold. It was designed by Vincent Callebaut and is built to house up to 26,000 shrubs and trees.
It aims to reduce 130 tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is equivalent to about 27 cars. The country has a much larger emission level, but this is a small step towards protecting the environment.
This amazing building has about 42 apartments which are spread out over 20 floors. The spiral shape isn’t for beautification alone, it allows sunlight to reach all parts of the building at the same time. It is also powered by solar energy to reduce dependence on electric energy.

Babina has a unique architecture-inspired style and subtle sense of humor that helps tell the story behind each illustration. The artist admits that he tries to rediscover the world through the eyes of a child as they “are able to have a vision of things totally uninhibited and without the conditioning of the experience”.
He uses his creativity to merge architecture with unplanned everyday life encounters. He has previously imagined mental illnesses as chillingly abstract house designs and illustrated houses for famous directors based on their distinctive style, among other fascinating projects.

]]>The Dweira Window or Azure Window is 92 feet tall. This limestone arch is located on the island of Gozo in Malta. It is a rock pillar that juts out of the sea and is connected via a horizontal slab. The window was formed when a sea cave fell in the 19th century.
Andreev and Britanishskaya intend to pay homage to this Azure Window. The exterior is planned to have mirrored steel faces and will reflect the environment around it. It is expected to have the same proportions and size of its predecessor. When done, it will be a historical feat which will also stand out as an homage to Malta’s history.

]]>More than 60% of the population of the world lives in the Asia Pacific region, and up to 2 billion of these people live in urban areas. Some cities, such as Jakarta and Manila, are undergoing rapid growth since people and businesses flock to the regions. Buildings account for about 40% of the energy consumption of the world. This is leading to more emission of carbon dioxide.
Awareness of sustainability is critical. Since there is little if all space for parks, the region has started creating green buildings. The strong adopters of this idea include Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
