Steelberg is Making Retro VHS Covers Inspired by Modern Movies

We live in the era when Blockbusters closed their doors and VHS tapes became relics of the past, but what if we told you there’s one artist who’ll make you feel like they’re still around? His name is Steelberg, and he specializes in making retro VHS covers inspired by modern movies and TV shows.

Steelberg’s Instagram page, followed by 40,000 people and counting, will take you straight back to the ’80s and ’90s when movie lovers couldn’t imagine their lives without VHS tapes. This creative designer mastered the art of creating retro-looking VHS covers, but you’ll notice two worlds collide when you look at them.

Even though Steelberg’s VHS covers look straight out of the ’80s, they’re actually inspired by modern-day movies and TV shows, such as Stranger Things, The Mandalorian, and WandaVision.

He usually focuses on the movies he thinks would look good as VHS tapes, but the inspiration sometimes strikes from the most unusual places.

“I’m a child of the ’80s, so it just seemed natural for me—the movies, the music, the TV, you name it… Everything inspires me. Mostly, though, it’s the group of underground artists that have been doing this ’80s nostalgia-driven art scene way before I came along,” Steelberg told Vehlinggo.
