The past decade has seen us slowly but surely gravitating towards minimalism. Minimalist trends include Nordic design. Characterized by functionality and minimalism, Nordic clothing has an effortlessly cool edge to it.

Most recently, we’ve taken note of Swedish fashion and print designer Louise Körner. Currently based in London, Körner’s designs include anything from sportswear to costume design to bridal dresses.

An award-winning designer, Körner has won The PREMIUM YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD in Womenswear for exceptional designs as well as the SWEDISH FASHION TALENT of THE YEAR Award by The Swedish Fashion Council during Stockholm Fashion Week 2016. Her clothes were also featured in top-tier fashion magazines like Swedish ELLE and VOGUE Italia.

“Our target customer is a fashion-conscious female with high disposable income, aged 19-55 years,” she reflected in an interview with Fashion Angel.

“Works within the fashion, finance, media and the arts, socializes and travels regularly therefore demanding a constant need to renew her wardrobe. She would also ideally like comfort and individuality.”

A mix of high-quality solid fabrics with elegant details, Körner’s clothes can be spotted in music videos, fashion films, and on celebrities and fashion bloggers, and for good reason! If you’re a fan of practical minimalism, you’d want to check her out.

Before growing up to become the successful storyboard artist and illustrator she is today, Alex Chiu imagined her creativity would take on different forms.

“I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer, a politician, a children’s book illustrator, a visual development artist,” she recounted in an interview with Concept Art Empire, “until I realized that I was awful at making finished drawings, hahaha! But also that storyboarding was my favorite aspect of the animation pipeline.”

She might be selling herself short. When it comes to animation, Chiu has worked so far for the biggest names in the industry including Marvel Animation, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Netflix. Now working as Director and Story Artist for Warner Bros., Chiu has carved herself a niche, often referencing her love of manga and anime.

In fact, it was her love of manga that would ultimately spark a creative interest, leading her into the field of animation. “I always doodled as a kid according to my parents,” says Chiu. “But I didn’t really pick up the pencil and draw every day with the intention of getting better in some shape or form until I was 10.”

“It all changed when I started reading manga,” she admits, adding that though she considered art as a career when she was in high school it wasn’t until sophomore or junior year of college when she narrowed down her career path. Having developed her skills throughout school and college, she landed on storytelling after experimenting with comics and film.

Currently based in LA, we can’t wait to see more of her work both online and on-screen!

What is it about miniature representations that make our hearts explode with happiness? It might be the amount of work and patience that goes into each piece, or it might be the sheer size of it. Whatever it is, we’re always delighted to run into miniature artists.

Most recently, we’ve come across Dina Brodsky’s miniature paintings. As it turns out, painting small comes naturally to Brodsky. “When I paint small I’m like a fish in water,” she shared with Whitehot Magazine. “I am much less comfortable painting on a larger scale, and very few of my large works hold up as well as the miniatures.”

Her miniatures include representations of natural landscapes, animals, and architecture. There’s also a series dedicated to seemingly empty rooms, finely painted—a sort of peephole, presenting snapshots of everyday life.

According to Brodsky, her painting technique relies on a combination of classical oil painting techniques (15th century Northern Renaissance methods and 17th-century Venetian techniques) alongside contemporary materials such as mylar and plexiglass.

“When I was studying, the things I had trouble with had more to do with drawing, proportion, perspective, anatomy, architecture,” she notes. “I feel like I am still catching up and trying to master a lot of those things. But color has always come organically.”

Born in Minsk, Belarus, Brodsky moved to the US in 1991 where she studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before earning her MFA at the New York Academy of Art. These days, she also runs online seminars, teaching others how to build an engaged community online, so as to enhance their online presence.

At its essence, fashion is a form of self-expression. It might sound like a cliché but true style doesn’t come from the clothes themselves but from the person wearing them. It’s self-confidence expressed through what you choose to wear, but also the way in which you present yourself to the world. But self-expression doesn’t necessarily mean taking yourself seriously. Fashion can and should also be a way of being creative and finding joy and beauty in the world—as well as in yourself.

We were recently reminded of the joys in fashion by Annie Naranian’s fashion illustrations. Though created digitally (using software like Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate), Naranian’s illustrations have a hand-made, unfinished quality to them that’s well-intended. Through broad “brush strokes” and clashing patterns and prints, these illustrations highlight the carefree attitude that comes with a sense of confidence in self-expression. The overall attitude is playful, inspiring us to explore our wardrobe.

Based in Toronto, Canada, Naranian’s illustrations have caught the attention of huge names in the fashion world, attracting clients like Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Reebok.

Her work process relies on intuition, as much as anything else: “Before I begin illustrating, my technical process begins with collecting images from Instagram, Pinterest, various fashion magazines, and Vogue.com,” she relayed once in an interview with I Love Illustration.

“My interest in vintage fashion can be seen reflected in my art, because I think much of contemporary fashion is indebted to what has come before it,” she further explains. “And it is that very connection my art seeks to explore: the ways in which the methods of contemporary fashion are related to or are different from the techniques of the past.”

With a nod to the past (as well as the future), Naranian’s illustrations are very much contemporary.

Here at 5dwallpaper, we’re suckers for all things digital, so we were delighted to find visual artist and 3D illustrator Sonal Jadhav while scrolling idly on Instagram.

With an emphasis on minimalism and typography, Jadhav’s work serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities found in digital art. Indeed, in an interview with Ballpitmag, Jadhav admitted she’s drawn to this medium because it’s very forgiving.

“It gives me the freedom to experiment constantly,” said Jadhav. Her experimentations include architectural drawings, greeting cards, and a series dedicated to the English alphabet. “I live to create illustrations that are pleasing to the senses.”

Born in India, Jadhav got her Master’s degree in Supinfocom Rubika (a computer graphics university), after which she worked at an indie game studio in the Netherlands, where she’s lived ever since. But according to Jadhav, her cultural background—growing up in Mumbai—is very much present throughout her work.

These days, her work includes editorial illustrations and advertising campaigns, with clients like Microsoft Build, FOUR magazine, and British Petroleum. She also has her own online shop, where she sells postcards and art prints. You can also follow her progress online through Instagram.

French-Tunisian street artist eL Seed incorporates traditional Arabic calligraphy into his graffiti art, a style he calls calligraffiti. Using Arabic calligraphy to spread messages of peace and unity, his artwork can be found all over the world, with the aim to unify communities and break stereotypes.

“The best graffiti artists were always doing much more than just writing their names,” reflected the artist in an interview with Savoir Flair. “The really good ones had connections with abstract expressionism, with pop art. They were doing something much bigger.”

According to eL Seed, the really great graffiti artists were much more than just taggers. “And the audience has yet to understand that the best artists could be street artists; street artist and artist are not separate categories.”

Unlike taggers, eL Seed has consciously used his art as a tool of political expression, aiming to spark political change through it. His work, more often than not, underlines his key principles of love, respect, and tolerance. Named a Global Thinker in 2016 by Foreign Policy for his project “Perception” in Cairo, eL Seed has also won the UNESCO Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture in 2017.

“I am a street artist, because I paint in the street. I am a Middle Eastern artist, because I paint in Arabic,” he relayed. “So I’m a Middle Eastern street artist. You always have to prove something. There are several levels of it.”

“My point is to not get rid of that categorization; I know my roots and the roots of my art are the street, and the roots of my art are Arabic, but bringing it to a level where people don’t look at me as only this is the biggest challenge. Step by step, I am trying to work on that.”

Indeed, his work is displayed both in public spaces and exhibitions. Most notably, he has painted on the façade of L’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, on the DMZ in between North and South Korea, in the slums of Cape Town, and in the heart of Cairo’s garbage collectors neighborhood.

There are those who draw, and then there are those who create magic. Nancy Liang belongs to the latter. Her illustrations and short animations might very well put a spell on you. With themes that include houses, the night sky, and plants, her work sparkles and glistens, the sum being greater than its parts.

Based in Sydney, Liang graduated with a Bachelor of Design at UNSW Art and Design and has no formal training in animation. As such, her animation, often experimental, pushes the boundaries of more traditional forms, incorporating mediums like drawing, painting, and paper cutting with digital programs like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Aero, and Processing.

Liang explains that the elements that make each animation piece have all been hand-drawn or handmade frame by frame, which naturally takes a lot of time and patience. Using kraft paper cutouts, she arranges her pieces in the visual form of a diorama “The objects in my work have hundreds of layers down to the shadow under window pane,” she explained once in an interview with Brown Paper Bag.

“For me, everything must be separate. That way I can move or redraw single elements frame by frame rather than create hundreds of finished collages frame by frame”. In order to do so, she draws, cuts, pastes, and shifts all the elements around. “It is a reiterative process,” she admits.

After playing around with the different pieces, she then scans all of her finished layers into the computer, arranges them in Photoshop, and only then proceeds to animate. The end result will most definitely mesmerize you.

Four-year-old Havanese rescue pup, Einstein, will easily win you over. Also known as Panda, his hobbies include playing chase, cuddles, meeting new people, and making humans laugh. His dislikes, on the other hand, include rain, fireworks, and angry people.

According to his owner, Einstein (aka Panda) was found as a stray on Capitol Hill at about six months old. “He is happy, friendly, and goofy!” they told Hello Bark! “He loves to play with his dog and people friends alike, is a serious cuddler and with me, is absolutely the stereotypical ‘velcro dog,'” they went on to say.

Considered a great lap dog, his owner shared that Havanese dogs, in general, are very friendly and affectionate, and tend to be easy to train. “If Einstein could only do one thing for the rest of his life, it would be sitting in my lap kissing my face,” they note. “He is loyal almost to a fault, and attached to my heels wherever we go.”

His quirky personality also means there is never a dull moment with the pup, and luckily for us these moments are captured and shared on his Instagram page. “Havanese are also incredibly cute,” add the owner, “small, fluffy, and the perfect size to tote around town!”

Another reminder for potential pet owners to adopt—and not shop, this holiday season. Scroll down to see some recent photos of Einstein.

Tessa M. de Graaf’s fashion illustrations deserve more hype. Composed of loose lines and wide brush strokes, they capture the essence of fashion without being too much on-the-nose.

Based in the Netherlands, de Graaf admits to drawing more or less her whole life: “As a 3-year-old girl, I was drawing all day long and when I turned 16 years I attended various courses in figure drawing,” she recalled in an interview with I Love Illustration.

She went on to study at the AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) in Amsterdam, and later got a Master’s degree in Fashion, Design, & Strategy at ArtEZ in Arnhem. “When I went to the academy, fashion drawing and figure drawing were my favorite subjects,” she notes.

After a short internship at Cosmopolitan magazine, she started working as a freelance stylist. “But illustrating was what I loved most so after a few years of styling I decided to change course and started working as an illustrator,” says de Graaf.

Nowadays, her work combines the best of both worlds—fashion and art—with selected clients including AvantGarde, Bijenkorf, Swarovski, Bordeaux, Femmesdusud, and Holland Herald magazine (KLM).

Working with materials such as ink, watercolor, paint, crayons, and pencils, de Graaf’s practice is more traditional, as she admits to preferring to work with her hands rather than sit in front of the computer.

“Before I start drawing I collect pictures from fashion magazines/the internet (Pinterest/ Instagram),” she explains about her work process. “I don’t sketch with a pencil; I just create lots of silhouettes or faces with watercolor/ ink directly on paper.”

The end result, though quite simple, is striking. Scroll down to see some recent highlights on her Instagram page.

Known for her colossal installations, Amanda Parer’s explores the relationship between light and dark, nature and man. Based in Tasmania, Parer admits to being inspired by its dramatic landscape, with her artwork aiming to explore the natural world, its fragility, and the role of humanity within it.

“We share our home planet Earth with other species,” she reflected in an interview with Stereolux, “and we may be the most evolved because we can manipulate our environment the most, but I think that this comes with an arrogance from us which has proven detrimental.”

Most known between her pieces are her giant bunnies, lit from within, Parer explains that she enjoys playing with scale as it offers a chance for humans to feel small, and to experience a sense of humility. “There is also the added effect which is that it allows people to enter a space of fantasy,” she notes. “Either way, I aim for it to be a journey.”

Employing scale, light, and humor entices the audience, and demands their attention. The giant installation also serve to stimulate the imagination while offering scope for reflection about our state with the natural world.

“I love art because it is so varied,” admits Parer. “Personally, I enjoy art that is responding to what is happening now, therefore my work explores man’s relationship with the natural world and our role within it. I present my artwork to promote discussion.”
