]]>Based in Costa Rica, Esquivel’s work as a brand designer allows her to integrate illustration into her pieces, but she also does freelance illustration on the side as well as more personal projects. “Honestly, illustration to me is a form of meditation,” she shared in an interview with Ballpitmag. “It’s a way to disconnect my brain and just be in the moment. I feel like art levels me out, it gives me perspective and makes life more enjoyable.”
Her aim with her work? Make other people happy. “It’s hard to predict how people will react to your work,” she notes, “but I hope it brings people joy. I hope they feel good when they look at it and it bolsters their imagination.”
Naturally, her sunny backdrop also plays a role in her illustrations. “Coming from such a biodiverse place as Costa Rica, of course, I get some of my inspiration from nature,” says Esquivel. “Besides that, I get a lot of references from films, books, and stories in general.”

]]>Born in France, and based in the UK, Johnsson also runs illustration and brush lettering workshops in London and beyond.“As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved drawing and making things,” she recalled in an interview with McQueens, “so I knew from an early age that graphic design was the way to go!”
According to Johnsson, she developed her illustration and lettering skills after graduating, when she found herself drawing all the time while traveling across South America. “That’s how I discovered and refined my personal style,” she notes. Incidentally, traveling also provides her with endless sources of inspiration. “I get really inspired when I travel,” she stressed. “I love immersing myself in a new culture and seeing things differently. I am obsessed with colors, patterns, and people.”

]]>Since launching The Happy News, Coxhead has turned into somewhat of a celebrity, appearing on BBC, and HuffPost, amongst other more traditional publications. Aside from her website, she also runs a buzzing Instagram page (with more than 130k fans to date), as well as a line of merch that includes a range of merry. greeting cards. And if that’s not enough, she’s also published a book titles Make Someone Happy with Penguin Random House.
“The fact that I can do what makes me happy for a living whilst also making others happy surely has to be the best thing ever!” she exclaimed in an interview with Virgin. “But also cups of tea, biscuits, and sunsets make me happy.”
Working from her rainbow-filled office, her goal is simple but poignant: make other people happy. “Without really realizing I started on my little happy mission,” she admits. “I thought if I could make a few people’s worlds a little happier then that’s what I would do until I figured out what I was going to do for a ‘proper’ job. I set up a Kickstarter to fund the first issue of The Happy Newspaper, a newspaper to celebrate all the good stuff going on in the world.”
But of course, that was only the beginning. Follow her social media pages for a bit of sunshine:

]]>“I’d like to think that my sentimental nature and sense of humor come across in my work so hopefully they are representative of those elements of my personality,” said Swift in an interview with The Smuggler. “When I was very little I wanted to be a hot dog lady,” she admitted. “Then I wanted to be a journalist. Then a lingerie designer. I hadn’t even considered illustration as an option until I was almost 20 and when I was 23 that I went back to study illustration.”
Her meandering journey landed her where she is today. But when it comes to the work itself, it’s pretty straight forward, beginning, like always, with a piece of paper. “All of my work starts out as a rough idea in a sketchbook or on a loose sheet of paper,” she explained her creative process. “Scribbled roughs are usually followed by some internet research for image references from which I begin to make pencil drawings. When I am happy with those I reproduce a final version of the drawing in black fineliner and scan the images into Photoshop to color, edit and compose my finished artwork.”
Here are some of the finished results:

]]>Her path to healing isn’t as hard as it may seem at first. Sharing quotes and mantras that are sometimes scribbled on tiny notes, she explores the way journaling can help you understand yourself better. She also teaches workshops and retreats centered around assisting others in finding their voices through storytelling, poetry, and narrative writing rooted in truth without shame.
“For me, self-care teaches that I can pour into myself just as much as I pour into others,” Elle explained in an interview with Hello Giggles. “In fact, it means that in order to put the most love and care towards others that I can, I must take care of myself first.” A simple truth but one that is powerful and most often forgotten.
“A lot of people believe that self-care has to be expensive and lavish, but it doesn’t,” she stresses. “It can mean something as simple as making sure that you take five minutes to decompress every day. Take time to breathe. We are moving so quickly that sometimes we don’t even realize we’re breathing! Remember to be here and be present—that’s a non-negotiable for me. It really is amazing what taking five minutes—or whatever you can spare—just to be present can do for the rest of your day.”
Take a breather.
