Sabeena Karnik has a way with paper. Using colored paper, she twists, cuts, and sculpts her material, exploring its endless possibilities. “My process is like every other designer,” she remarked once in an interview with Creative Chair.

“It always starts with sketches putting down all the ideas that are in mind and making it into a harmonious-looking composition,” Karnik reflects. “After approvals from the client, I make the final clean drawing adding colors if needed, then proceed to create the illustration with paper.”

Karnik also stresses that none of her drawings are made digitally. “Everything is hand done without the use of computer software.”

Based in Mumbai, India, Karnik specializes in paper typography, with her paper alphabet creating quite a splash online. Combining a love for paper and typography, her handcrafted lettering is very delicate and ideally displayed in a shadow box.

“I decided to start my typography series and thought of making individual letters with paper,” she recalled in an interview with Verve Magazine. “A, B, C, D… going right up to Z. By then, I had my own website and started posting images of what I had created. Even before I had got halfway through the alphabet, I was offered my first project with Tanishq.”

According to Karnik, paper is the most versatile and creative medium. “Whatever I do, even if it’s the smallest thing like cutting a vegetable or a fruit, I want it to be perfect,” she explains, “it has to be done precisely, in a pattern. And you will see that attention to detail in my work as well.”

Considered one of the most distinguished representatives of modern calligraphy, Pokras Lampas’ practice combines street culture, graffiti, design, and typography. Born in Korolyov in 1991, the Russian artist is a distinguished member of the “Calligraffiti” movement, and known for a style that has become to be known as “Calligrafuturism”.

According to Lampas, his calligraphy work is a combination of the different languages and letters he knows, as he invents new letters that look familiar but are in fact undecipherable.

“Calligraphy is not only about art, it is the way to pass the message,” he explained in an interview with Medium. “Just imagine,” he says “in hundred years’ people will realize that they actually need the way to communicate with each other — and to provide humankind with the lingua franca, where all the languages are evenly represented. Here we will need to find new letter shapes, because everyone would want to see their country represented in the new alphabet.”

Displayed in museums and galleries around the world, in countries like Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and even South Korea, he has also won the GQ Russia “MAN of the YEAR: NEWCOMER” award for 2019, for his street art, fashion and cultural projects.

“I write my thoughts on culture, technology and art are influencing the future,” relayed Lampas. “The language itself is not important — but the way how people are searching for the unified language and what guides will they use to transform written languages is,” he adds.

Most recently he created a monumental printed installation on the façade of Dover Street Market in London. Scroll down to see more of his selected work.

With the future looking grimmer by the minute, it’s little wonder most of us seek comfort in the past. There’s a craving for nostalgia—for ’70s and ’90s fashion, old record players, and glossy magazines. Sign painter Chris Mackenzie-Gray turns nostalgia into function, producing and hand-painting signs that speak the language of dem olden days.

His sign-painting services range from very small door numbers to large-scale murals. “We work on all kinds of surfaces including brick walls, gloss, shop faces and glass and for a wide range of clients – from very commercial to very independent,” Mackenzie-Gray relayed in an interview with Lecture in Progress, where he promoted his sign-painting business, based in the UK.

Having studied graphic design with a focus on typography at LCC, Mackenzie-Gray was drawn to the analog processes of writing. “With a computer, it’s not difficult to change the layout or grid, whereas with letterpress, you have to really think about what you’re doing because it’s such a faff to change something,” he explained.

“I did a whole bunch of research into sign painting, and one of my tutors shut down the idea,” he admits. “Maybe they didn’t consider it graphic design, or a viable job but I just remember thinking, ‘well, that’s not something I’m going to think about again.’ I really enjoyed graphic design, but sitting at a computer nine hours a day would have left me feeling very drained.”

Jack Kohler Byers finds beauty in chaos and decay. His artworks revolve around typeface, though he’s not strictly a typography artist. Rather, Kohler Byers explores contemporary communication across a wide range of scales and media. The result is fragmented and messy – words layered on top of words, a group of letters forming incoherent sentences.

According to Kohler Byers, he was first drawn to the art of typography when he was just a child. Growing up in a small New York town, he remembers being intrigued by the fading letters of hand-painted signs during visits to a nearby industrial city.

“These fragmented messages activated my imagination to speculate about the day they were freshly painted, who painted them, and the different events that led to their decay,” he reflected in an interview with Art of Choice. “These century-old letters formed a dynamic contrast with more contemporary letters being painted around the city by its younger occupants.”

A self-taught artist through and through, Kohler Byers’ style was inspired by modern artists such as Picasso. “I don’t have the benefit of a formal artistic training, everything I learned was by reading, learning lessons, and picking up wisdom from others,” he notes.

The result, though chaotic, is well worth taking note of:

Some inspiring messages speak louder than others. Such are Timothy Goodman’s words. A designer, illustrator, muralist, and author, his messages are splashed on anything from magazine covers and clothes to walls and, sometimes, whole buildings.

But whether it’s a large-scale public mural on the streets of NYC, a marker scrawling on a Uniqlo t-shirt, or a post on Instagram, Goodman wants his words to pack a punch – hoping to spark dialogues surrounding difficult subjects such as heartbreak, politics, and mental health.

“I just want to create art that people can connect to,” he admitted in a candid interview with Eye on Design. “With so many of the stories I’m trying to tell, I’m trying to make things for actual people. I think sharing your personal stories is sort of activism; when you connect to other lonely people in the world, I think there’s a service involved that is really powerful. I want to continue to use my work as a vehicle for that.”

According to Godman, the greatest joy in being an artist is the ability to connect to other humans emotionally through his work and words. “If I can’t connect to someone seeing my work on an emotional level, then I don’t know why I’m doing it,” he says. “How do you interact with a great film or a great book or a great album? You’re connecting with it emotionally.”

With almost 170k followers on Instagram, people seem to be connecting. And it’s not only people who hear him out. His clients also include giants like Google, Samsung, Uniqlo, Target, Airbnb, Netflix, and The New Yorker. Take a look for yourself:

There is nothing that excites us more than exploring the creative niches this world has to offer. In the case of Heather Hardison, she’s managed to carve herself two creative niches: sign painting on the one hand and food illustration on the other.

Having graduated from the College of Design at North Carolina State University with a degree in Art & Design, she’s now based in Oakland, CA, where she’s working full time as both sign painter and illustrator. She’s also the author and illustrator of the book Homegrown: Illustrated Bites from your Garden to your Table – a fully illustrated guide to growing and cooking seasonal produce.

“My work is a hybrid of digital and analog,” she relayed in an interview with The Design Kids. “Almost everything that I do starts as a pencil sketch. From there, the final output depends on the purpose. For hand-painted signs, the entire process is analog. For designs that utilize hand-painted letters, but have final output that is print or digital, I scan in the lettering to manipulate in Photoshop. Other times, when something needs to be scaleable, my sketch is vectorized in Illustrator.”

“These days I keep busy with my illustration and sign painting jobs,” she went on to say. “But I’m always looking for ways to bring those skills together. So far, murals and food packaging have been two of my favorite ways to accomplish that.”

A creative through and through, she’s also a fan of gardening, beekeeping, cooking, and rock climbing. Below you’ll find some highlights from her Instagram page:

Shayda Campbell wants you to paint pretty and enjoy the process. A creative through and through, she passes her knowledge onwards on her designated YouTube channel, sharing art tutorials (two a week), with the hope of encouraging the artist in all of us.

“I’ve tried my best to make my channel a calm, inspirational space where you can approach the basics of drawing, watercolor painting, journaling, and many other crafts,” writes Campbell on her website. “There are so many benefits to everyday creativity, so I hope you’ll grab a paintbrush and join me. Because creativity is play, anyone can do it!”

Based in Prince Edward Island, she teaches anything from how to knit your own hat to how to bake a gorgeous birthday cake. But mostly, she focuses her work on papercrafts.

“At the heart of my YouTube channel is the idea that making the artifacts of our everyday life, things like cookies, calendars or greeting cards, into things of beauty is an important task,” she says. “It’s uplifting. First, because the process of creativity is so wonderful, and second, because it’s just lovely to be surrounded by lovely things.”

Illustrator and designer David Milan is a modern-day lettering artist, having fallen in love with the art of the written word through graffiti. His graffiti-inspired art soon caught the attention of others, with selected clients like MTV, CNN, and HBO, amongst many others.

“I think the strokes are very important element in order to create a nice lettering piece, also the thickness and kerning are very important,” he told Lettering Daily, explaining his creative process. “Sometimes I have the same mistakes, I usually see different works of great artists to have a better idea of how to do it and that’s how I improve my work!”

Though most of his work these days is digital, there’s a sense of movement and tactility with every digital brushstroke, making his work seemingly pop out of the screen.

According to Milan, the hardest part of his job is actually finding a good quote or a word to transform. “I could spend hours looking for a good one,” he admits. “Since I have the phrase or word I start to make the sketches in different styles, after having chosen the best one I proceed to do it with a marker, brush or directly digital on a tablet. Finally, I place the lettering on a photo or image.”

With more than 130k followers on Instagram to date, people are clearly taking note.

Naomi Bulger’s Instagram bio reads: “on a mission to lead a life that is slow, creative & personal.” And at least judging by her Instagram page, Bulger puts her money where her mouth is. Carving herself a path to a life carried out with deliberation and a sense of creative freedom means slowing down the pace and taking note of her surroundings. One such way to do so is by writing letters, the old fashioned way.

“Writing a letter feels completely different to writing an email,” shared Bulger the writer and illustrator in an interview with Flow Magazine. “It forces you to slow down and be more mindful of what you are saying.”

Snail mail is also where two of her greatest joys converge: writing and painting. “I like to paint illustrations and incorporate the addresses into the designs to make each envelope bright, cheerful and something unique that will make the recipient—and hopefully also the mailman—happy.”

As part of the #100DaysinDinan project, Bulger illustrated personalized envelopes. “I’m making the envelopes for each card by tracing one of the original envelopes the cards came in, onto used calendars and magazine pages,” she writes on her website. “A stamp or two, and the address: there’s not much room for anything else, so into the post they go.”

Her Instagram page is full of nuggets of inspiration like so:

Calligrapher Lindsey Bugbee found her artistic voice through necessity. Growing up in rural Kansas, she admits that her childhood was very quiet and uneventful. So much so, that she needed to figure out a way to entertain herself.

“Eventually I discovered that making art was a great way to have fun,” she recalled. “My mother didn’t mind letting me draw or paint on certain walls, and we had a sand driveway that I could make line drawings in after it rained. My grandmother used to color and paint with me, and I remember watching her and thinking, ‘I wish I could keep inside the lines like that!’”

Eventually, she found her true calling in calligraphy, adding a contemporary twist to an ancient art. “I don’t use traditional calligraphy styles,” she says. “I like making up styles as I go. Often I create new styles depending on the client and what I think will be best for their event.”

Lending her skills to clients, as well as teaching calligraphy lessons, means that Bugbee’s days are full. But you can catch some of her work on her Instagram page, where she has gathered almost 100k followers.

Surround yourself by lovely things by first, following her online:
