These themes also tie with her background, having studied fashion design at the European Institute of Design. She has also worked for the painter Paul Balmer and studied drawing and painting for a year at The Art Student League of New York.
A full-time illustrator and designer, over the years Fitz-James Stuart has been habitually collaborating with brands like Vans, Sony, Bvlgari, and L’Oréal. “I draw for fashion brands, magazines, and fanzines,” she says. She also works as a DJ, explaining that DJing is her way of telling people what inspires, moves and drives her.

]]>“My inspiration comes from ordinary, everyday things like cactuses, teacups, staircases, and vibracrete walls,” she told You Are Brave, noting her sources of inspiration. “I usually have a notebook with me, where I make sketches, and I take a lot of photographs of textures, details, juxtapositions, and compositions that seem to give me ideas.”
The owner of the Skinny laMinx brand (named after Moore’s Siamese cat), Moore’s career path wasn’t a straight line. “After 10 years of illustration, I needed a change, so in 2006 I took a half-day job as a comic’s scriptwriter and spent the rest of my day messing around in my studio on Long Street,” she recalled. “I started blogging about my work, and opened an online shop on Etsy. People around the world started reading my blog and buying my things, and I got some wholesale orders to the USA, and suddenly I found that I was a designer with a design business.”
Now with almost 40k followers on Instagram, Moore is a busy bee. “The Skinny laMinx recipe is simple,” reads her website, “Mix together a love of pattern, a cute shop, a top notch team, and top it all off with equal parts playful and chic.”

]]>But it took him some time to get there. After receiving a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute (before which he studied Spanish Literature at the University Of Colorado), Martinez acted as one of the directors of the Clarion Alley Mural Project in SF’s Mission District for nearly a decade.
“For me, some of my first influences were murals, and I came up in that type of environment,” he recalled in an interview with The Hundreds. “When I started painting murals, I was thinking about that work. I learned about graffiti culture later in my practice, but I’ve never been a writer. I know other friends who came up in strictly graff circles who knew all about that world, but then found out more about the mural masters later in their careers.”
“In my practice, I have realized, I want to make work that reminds the viewer of what it is that we are struggling for,” he says. “Not just the struggle, but also the reason for the struggle. I personally get excited when I see people doing amazing things in public space. To me, that’s the flavor of our country, so I try to participate in my community with my art, and that is my way to play a role in a social movement.”

]]>With clients that include Kate Spade, Anthropologie, and Flow Magazine, on top of more than 35k followers on Instagram, Isabella has clearly carved a niche for herself. Having trained as a textile designer, her illustrations rely heavily on her background in textile, using mainly gouache colors that mimic screen painting.
“When I started working as an illustrator, gouache was what I had in my toolbox,” she explains, adding that “it wasn’t a deliberate choice.” But it turned out for the best, allowing her to further explore the relationship between line and flat color (“gouache is the perfect medium for this,” she explains). “Also, it dries almost immediately so it’s great when you’re working on deadline!”
Surrounded by nature, inspiration comes easy for Isabella. But she’s also drawn to her childhood memories, as she expands her search for charm in the everyday. “I feel very connected to my memories of childhood and I’m always interested in bridging the gap between childhood and adulthood,” she says.

]]>Describing her style as “fresh, whimsical, organic yet graphic, graceful and modern, with a nod to days gone by”, her patterns are often floral or based on nature. “Sometimes my work is incredibly minimal and simple, other times, quite complex,” she relayed in an interview with Ballpit Magazine. “I like to bury little hidden treasures in my work, little details that you only notice when you’ve taken time to really look at them.”
Her designs are very much inspired by the world around her, which includes the beautiful forests of Ontario, the pastel colors and tiles of Lisbon, and her cherished and plentiful travels abroad.
“Art has the potential to really move people, and therefore, I find art is full of hope,” says Olwen. “And on a far more superficial level, art just brings beauty to the everyday… and I feel we need that now more than ever.”
Take a look at some of her cheerful patterns:

]]>Living and working from her untraditional houseboat based in Leicester, Hall’s inspiration is found right outside her front door. “I think living on a boat my whole life has made me into a nature lover!” she writes on her website.
“I’ve been surrounded by nature since I was little and I think I forget that the animals/nature I see isn’t what people see day to day unless you live where I live, so I shouldn’t take it for granted,” she added in an interview with Ohh Deer. “I love being outside and walking and always feel inspired when I’ve spent some time outdoors.”
Her illustrations – made of loose linework and watercolor – invite nature homeward, by celebrating its endless beauty. Hall also makes sure that the majority of the products she sells are packaged in 100% biodegradable and compostable clear corn starch “plastic” bags, and all that her paper goods have been made either using recycled materials or are FSC approved.

]]>“As a graphic designer, typography has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember,” said Griffo in an interview with Hand Lettering for Beginners. “I used to write, and rewrite my class notes until they were as close to perfect as possible. I learned so much about the art of type as a design student, and I interned at a letterpress studio to learn more about the origin of type. I wanted to learn more about hand lettering because I knew it would bring a unique and personalized touch to the work I was doing with my design clients.”
But what began as a simple intention to learn more about hand lettering, spiraled into a blossoming career. “I took the class as a creative outlet,” she says. “While it related directly to the work I do daily, it was a step away from the computer, a new challenge. I was excited to have some direction, and someone to inspire and motivate me.”
Her playful, and visually tasteful designs will inspire you to get going. It’s that motivational boost you didn’t even know you were looking for. “I love that each person’s lettering style is a reflection of themselves,” says Griffo. “That’s what makes it so unique – your personal touch.”

]]>Currently having studios in both Austin, TX and Washington, DC, her wallpapers have clearly took off, creating quite the buzz on Instagram, with more than 20k fans following her brand. “I want my art to have an overall essence of joy, of whimsy, or even humor,” said Zaremba in an interview with The House That Lars Built. “I started making wallpaper because I loved the idea that my work could be a backdrop to someone’s life.”
Her work is mostly inspired by art, in it’s broadest sense. “Some people are inspired by stories or by nature,” she says. “I am also a huge art nerd and I’m always reading about something whether it be a book on performance art, ceramics, color theory, or an artist biography. I also go to museums all the time.”
Her artistic process is very thoughtful, with each pattern meticulously created. “I actually approach an idea or project by thinking about the right process to bring it to life,” says Zaremba. “So if I want to create a pattern that looks like paper cut shapes then I will cut them out of paper. If I want to make a wallpaper design that is hand painted then I will get out a paint brush and paint it. I look to the idea as the jumping off point to creating versus sticking with one particular ‘style.'”
Whatever her style is, the finished result is equally striking. A worthy backdrop to our everyday life – but are we even worthy?
