While flower bouquets are a great and rather easy way to add a pop of color to your home, the downside of flowers are plenty and include: allergies, maintenance, and an early unfortunate death. Botanical artist Emily Paluska is here to help us out.

Known for her vibrant paper flowers, Paluska believes in the value of one-of-a-kind pieces made by hand rather than mass-produced objects. The owner of Revery Paper Flora, her paper flowers are a great addition to any home without the tackiness we often equate with artificial flowers.

β€œI found my style through a lot of practice,” Paluska shared in an interview with Paper Talk. β€œI make a lot of my flowers over a hundred times and through all those renditions, they evolve into something better, not just because of the practice but I am able to see it more clearly.”

Realism and color are two important criteria. β€œColor has also become integral to my achieving realism,” says Paluska. β€œFor the majority of my custom projects, I will always start with white paper so I can achieve the exact shade necessary.”

Based in Washington, DC, Paluska first discovered a love of paper flowers when she was a young mother in search of a creative outlet. β€œI was never a crafty or DIY type of person so I’m not sure why I thought doing something like this would be fun,” she admits

β€œI found them appealing initially because I hated spending money on fresh flowers and thought paper flowers would be a fun alternative for me to have flowers around my home that I wouldn’t have to take care of.”

The end result, situated at the meeting point between nature and paper, is both realistic and artistic. You’d want to check her out.

Stephanie Redlinger considers herself first and foremost, a botanical artist, which makes sense judging by her chosen subjects: mainly flowers. But there’s a catch! While her subjects look uncannily realistic, they’re actually made of paper.

Working mainly with fine crepe paper, each piece begins with some background research.Β “I do copious amounts of research on my subjects both before and during the making process,” writes Redlinger on her personal website, “preferably by studying live plants and flowers, but also from online image searches and combing through books and magazines.”

Her paper creations include succulents (which she aptly nicknames “the anglerfish of the plant world”), mushrooms, and flower bouquets. In fact, the very first paper flowers she made were her wedding bouquet and her husband’s boutonniere for their small City Hall wedding in San Francisco.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Redlinger says that when she’s not making paper plants and flowers she might be found working out in the garden, joining her husband in chasing their two young kids and our dog around the house, or reading a good SciFi book. Ideal lifestyle, if you ask us!

Spring is in the air but just outside our reach. Chin up! Ann Wood is here to provide you the backdrop your Instagram feed craves. Inspired by historical botanical prints, Wood creates stunning paper art that is in full bloom. Crabapples, daffodils, and fritillarias all come to life in paper form – both tangible and made to last.

β€œWe pause to look at a flower, pick up a feather, touch a leaf, or comment to a companion about a particular specimen,” notes Wood in her website. β€œNature’s beauty is fleeting and ever changing in its magnificence. My work speaks to the notion that everything is temporary.”

Incredibly, Wood’s craft was learned from trial and error. β€œI didn’t look at any tutorials, I made it up my way β€” how I saw things,” she admitted in an interview with Lia Griffith. β€œMy background is in a variety of mediums such as mixed media sculpture, wood carving, embroidery, and painting.”

And while flowers are always in fashion, she tries to stay away from trends, inspired by classic botanical identification guides and photographs. β€œThe world of plants is huge, so I try to stay away from trends and follow my own path,” she stresses.
