If Japan happens to be one of the places on your bucket list and you enjoy art inspired by its culture and history, Georgia Low’s creations will be your cup of tea. Her papercut art is as stunning as it gets and it will transport you to the Land of the Rising Sun.

Low is a papercut artist based in North Wales with her partner and their dogs Millie and Miso. She attracted 100,000 followers to her Instagram page with her amazing miniature papercut art, but how did her obsession with this art form start?

“I initially discovered papercutting in 2009 and instantly fell in love with the artistic process and using paper as a medium. I draw my designs in reverse on the back of the paper before cutting it out by hand with my scalpel, this takes hours to complete,” she writes on her official website.

Low was just seven when she moved from London to the beautiful countryside in North Wales. Growing up surrounded by nature significantly impacted the way she approaches art – but this isn’t her only source of inspiration.

Low is also a huge fan of Japanese culture, and she regularly tries to include this theme in her designs. From cherry blossoms, koi fishes, beautiful temples, lotus flowers, and red-crowned cranes, her art often features motifs we associate with this country.

One could say Bovey Lee was born into art. Born in Hong Kong, she began practicing Chinese calligraphy at the age of ten, moving on to study painting and drawing in her formative years, and then completing her BA degree in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Having moved to the US in 1993, she earned her first Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequently, she earned a second MFA in Digital Arts at Pratt Institute in New York.

Currently based in LA, these past decades have seen Lee focusing on paper cut art. Using a knife as a drawing tool, she creates her work on Xuan (rice) paper, which in turn reflects her Chinese heritage and those early encounters with art-making, which began with Chinese calligraphy, painting, and drawing.

“Rice paper is particularly special to me because it’s the first art material I used since age 10 when I practiced Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting,” she relayed once in an interview with the Chinese Cultural Studies Center. “Chinese invented paper so I also feel a sense of cultural significance and relevance in using it in my work.”

“My cut paper explores the tension and contradiction between our obsession with urbanism and desire for nature,” she further explains on her website. “My cut paper practice is also a nod to my ancestral roots, and is very much informed by traditional Chinese paper cutting.”

According to Lee, historically, paper cutting was a pastime done communally by generations of women in China. The works, which were often created in multiples at the same time, responded to the women’s everyday lives and often depicted images of farm and village life.

Art duo Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker (aka Hari & Deepti) describe themselves as cloud chasers and paper cut artists. Undeniable experts of all things paper, they create dreamlike settings that employ light and shadows.

“Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium,” they write on their website. “It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it into something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”

Drawn towards the imaginative aspect of storytelling, the duo believes that paper is a great medium to reflect the many shades and depths a good story contains. To that, they add light, creating paper cut shadow boxes assembled in wooden boxes. Their back-lit light boxes incorporate flexible LED strip lights, making the end result really pop.

It’s an art form that relies on the dichotomy between light and dark. “What amazes us about the paper cut light boxes are the dichotomy of the piece in its lit and unlit state, the contrast is so stark that it has this mystical effect on the viewers,” they explain.

Using an x-acto knife Harrison carefully cuts her creations out of paper. These intricate, unique patterns are then transformed into a variety of fun lasercut housewares, that are sometimes made of paper, and sometimes wood. Her brand, Light & Paper, has its own online store, but can also be found in a variety of brick and mortar locations.

“My most popular paper cutting piece is definitely my anatomical heart,” remarked Harrison in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I think people really connect with that iconic image, and I’ve tried to make it in my own aesthetic with the repeating patterns that I use.”

And when it comes to inspiration, Harrison has plenty to draw from. “I have definitely researched historical paper cutting and looked into other artists that inspire me,” she says, adding that she tries not to confine her inspiration to just paper cutting. “I find that I’m inspired by many different types of artwork, and that helps me form unique new ideas,” she says.

“I also get really inspired by my own maker community,” adds Harrison. “I have a studio in an industrial building in the West End of Toronto that I share with another local maker. We host monthly meetings with other Toronto creatives; that’s been really helpful and inspiring, brainstorming and developing ideas together and keeping each other on track.”

Put it simply: Masayo Fukuda has mastered the art of papercutting. Known in Japanese as Kirie, it is said to have developed after 610 AD when Tesuki Washi paper, invented in China, was brought to Japan by a Buddhist monk from Korea. The practice itself involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper, which are then contrasted against a black background to reveal the unique design.

“The way to make a basic paper cutting is to first draw a sketch on thin paper, put it on top of a black sheet of paper, which will become the final work, and then cut the two pieces together,” Fukuda further explained in an interview with X-Ray Magazine. According to her, the sketch makes or breaks the finished piece. “My work is either good or bad based on the sketch and its completeness,” she says.

“To make one artwork, I combine white paper, artistic skill, cutting techniques with a three-dimensional feeling on one piece of paper,” addsFukuda. Some of her more outstanding pieces include paper cut animals, with a special focus on marine life and underwater creatures.

“I would like to express depth and a three-dimensional feeling with my paper cutting art,” she further explains. “Therefore, I make large works, carefully using the contrast of the thickness and thinness of the line.”

“Grab your tools, let’s have fun,” reads Estaminé Studio’s motto. The Portuguese design studio, whose work focus is on papercraft, illustration, and lettering, was launched in 2016 by paper artist André Santos. With an emphasis on papercraft (in all its versatility), the studio’s creations include both 2D and 3D models, all cut with great precision and attention to detail.

“Papercraft is the design field that fulfills me the most,” stressed Santos in an interview with The Design Kids. But it took him some time and creative experimentation to discover this. “I always liked handcrafting, but I didn’t know it was what I really wanted to do with my career until my Master’s Degree,” he explained.

“The turning point was an MA project where Andrew Howard asked us to design several shop windows randomly assigned to the class,” he went on to say. “I spent dozens of hours hand-cutting many sheets of that kind of paper. Sure, It was a painful process but I found it quite pleasant and the handcrafted feel of the output was really nice.”

After experimenting some more with paper, he discovered a new approach to design. And little by little, he was developing his skills and attracting clients. “It took me two years and a few personal projects to improve my papercraft portfolio to the point where I finally built up the courage to make a tough 2018 new year resolution: take on Estaminé as my full-time job,” he says. Clearly, his intuition was right.

Calvin Nicholls’ paper animals are nothing short of incredible. Using sheets of white, plain, A4 paper, he manages to bring to life animals like owls, lions, and bears, all looking amazingly realistic and highly detailed. Most all of Nicholls work is white on white, which allows the viewer to better appreciate the fur and feathers he recreates, using lighting and shadows to create the feeling of depth.

Each of his pieces begins with a drawn pattern, which he traces and transfers to sculpture paper. He then cuts each one with a scalpel or X-acto knife on a cutting mat, using very small amounts of glue to assemble the figure piece by piece. “The cuts and texture are often tiny and very delicate but due to the numerous glue joints for every piece, the overall strength is substantial,” he writes on his website, assuring that the finished product isn’t as fragile as it seems. “Tests of the bond between glue and paper reveal that when deliberately forced, the paper tears while the glue seam remains intact.”

His journey to paper art began while taking graphic design classes in college, where he studied paper as a medium. Several years later, in 1983, while designing a menu for a client, he discovered a paper sculpture artist in Toronto and approached him about collaborating. “His work and the art form really appealed to me and I immediately began my experiments with various papers that I had become familiar with through the graphics trade,” he recalled.

“I developed my art to the point where I blended many of my passions-wildlife, the natural world, photography, design, model making, sculpture, light and shadow and have managed to indulge all of them,” Nicholls shared in an interview with the Daily Mail. “When I started out in the early 1980’s I didn’t see this being my job nearly 30 years later,” he admitted.

Paper artist Aline Houdé-Diebolt started in a different field altogether – textile design. But the unconditional love of shapes, materials, and colors, she found originally discovered through textile, is now being rediscovered through paper. Residing in Paris, Houdé-Diebolt works as a freelance paper designer and set designer in both France and abroad.

“I love my job because I do a lot of different things,” she gushed in an interview with Strictly Paper. “I also love to explore new techniques, to overcome challenges, to go out of my comfort zone and update my skills.”

“Paper is a really fascinating material,” she adds. “There are 1000 ways to use it, I do not really have any advice to give, everyone has to use it in their own way. The most important thing is to have fun!”

Regularly collaborating with major luxury brands, Houdé-Diebolt creates sets for showcases, events, photoshoots, and advertising shoots. She also designs content for social networks as well as tailor-made works for individuals and personal pieces.

London-based paper artist, Poppy Chancellor, reinvented the traditional craft of papercutting by adding a playful, contemporary twist to her creations. Originally studying illustration at Kingston University, she went on to study at the Royal Drawing School where her passion for paper art had sparked.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BqrVOxelWHx/

“I was in the final year of my Illustration degree and I got a bad final mark,” she recalled, speaking candidly with the Bailey Nelson blog. “I had one chance to redeem myself through an additional mark for the final exhibition, and I knew I had to take a totally different approach.” It was then that she decided to dabble in 3D art. “I made a city out of shoeboxes with black cut-out silhouettes of people in the windows,” she said. “You could turn the lights in the ‘rooms’ on and off.”

It was as though a light had switched on inside her head. It was then that she realized she wanted to explore the ancient art of papercutting. “I wanted to use a traditional craft, but with a contemporary subject matter,” she explained.” She was not the only one. Brands like Nike, Adidas, and Vogue have all collaborated with her, and her Instagram page alone has amassed more than 20k fans.

Take a look at some of her playful designs in the gallery below:

Known primarily for their miniature birds, each piece is said to take around 4-8 hours to complete, as their aim is to make their tiny creations look as lifelike as possible

It all started in 2018, when they took on the 365 days challenge, sharing their progress on Instagram. “We took up the 365 days challenge of creating Miniature birds using paper and watercolors for this entire year of 2018,” they told Bored Panda. “The concept of this miniatures is to express the intricacy and vibrancy of the birds around us. We used the technique of layered paper cutting to give volume to the artworks and get a three-dimensional feel to them.”

Their rich portfolio of miniature birds includes exotic birds, as well as more common ones. Their birds are photographed in their natural environments, perched on a twig or soaring through the air. “The concept of this miniatures is to express the intricacy and vibrancy of the birds around us,” they say. “We used the technique of layered paper cutting to give volume to the artworks and get a three-dimensional feel to them.”

Her original takes on paper art can be found on her Instagram page. Take a peek in the gallery below:

London-based paper artist, Poppy Chancellor, reinvented the traditional craft of papercutting by adding a playful, contemporary twist to her creations. Originally studying illustration at Kingston University, she went on to study at the Royal Drawing School where her passion for paper art had sparked.

Indian artistic duo, Nayan Shrimali and Vaishali Chudasama, hand-cut miniature paper animals by layering and watercoloring paper.

Their paper birds, as well as other paper goodies, are sold on their online store. But you can also follow their creative endeavor on Instagram.
