At first glance, the works of Chilean artist Guillermo Lorca look like paintings done by a classic Baroque master painter. The deep colors and intense play of the light and dark immediately reminds you of Rembrandt or Rubens. However, once you take a deeper look, you realize its contemporary art dressed like Baroque.

While following the visual style of Baroque, Lorca deviates from this art movement in the subjects and scenes he portrays in his artworks. Most of the time, his paintings feature surreal and dreamlike scenes that remind us of things nightmares are made of.

For example, in his painting “Casita de dulce” (Candy House), Lorca paints a little girl that is standing in the middle of a room filled with what seems to be corpses. “The Eternal Life,” on the other hand, paints a scene that appears calm at first but becomes more dramatic the longer you look at it.

In a recent interview with Couer et Art, Lorca said that the goal of his art is to trigger different emotions in viewers, including beauty, fear, and affection.

“All paintings mean something important to me; they are a kind of diary of my psychic life, and that gives a symbolic meaning to my life,” he added.

You can check out more of Lorca’s amazing works below.

Lauren Elyse’s colorful, dynamic paintings are a reminder that joy can be found both outside and inside, within ourselves. An interdisciplinary artist (trained at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts), Elyses toolbox includes acrylic, watercolor, oil, and even charcoal. She also doesn’t exclude herself to one medium at a time, with the end result oftentimes a vibrant mixture of mediums and techniques.

According to Elyse, using bold strokes creates a more dynamic feel to her paintings: “For me, it creates a more energetic feel when swipes of paint slide through one another, catch and meld to bring out a subtle color blend, and in the wake leaves the high relief and impression of my brush’s intentional path,” she writes.

With nature being a common theme throughout her work, this dynamic quality also highlights the vibrancy and spirit that is imbued in a natural setting. “It’s definitely trickier to prevent colors from muddling in this approach, but the reward is that of a painted flower vibrating a bit more on the canvas,” says Elyse.

In one series, Elyse focuses on a meadow that is awash with color. Painted with acrylic on wood canvas panel, Elyse explains such paintings are meant to be a snapshot of one small patch of a broader meadow.

“I generally paint them in multiples so the canvases get scattered along a wall and the whole of them is understood in combination with the space between them,” she notes.

As it turns out, natural themes come quite naturally to Elyse, having been brought up surrounded by nature. “Nature has always been a great influence in my life,” she says. “I grew up surfing, found out a few years back I had a lineage in the floral industry reaching back to my great grandfather in Holland.”

Her paintings are a great addition to any feed, especially this spring.

Surrealist art often features an element of surprise, created by unexpected juxtapositions and dreamlike aspects. Such is the work of contemporary artist Daniel Merriam.

Describing himself as a “romantic surrealist”, his paintings are inspired not only by the surrealist movement but by Art Nouveau, Belle Époque, Gothic, Renaissance, and the Victorian age.

Merriam’s paintings often present fantastical settings: a house harnessed to an elephant that is being ridden by a monkey; a winged butler presenting a tray filled with birds to a hungry cat.

According to the painter, nature plays a big role in his art. “My world was fashioned from the rawness of nature’s reality and the fanciful treatments of my perception,” he reflected once in an interview with Putsch.

According to Merriam, from a very young age he was drawn to the natural world: “Between sailing, fishing, and diving I had spent as much time in the water as I did out,” he recalled.

Water in particular is a common theme in his paintings. “Both my family and our community possessed a whimsical quality that remains in my art to this day,” stressed Merriam.

With over 45,500 followers on his Instagram alone, Merriam’s work is celebrated both online and offline. His work is exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. In one case, his paintings were shown alongside those of Salvador Dali. You’d want to take note.

What is it about miniature representations that make our hearts explode with happiness? It might be the amount of work and patience that goes into each piece, or it might be the sheer size of it. Whatever it is, we’re always delighted to run into miniature artists.

Most recently, we’ve come across Dina Brodsky’s miniature paintings. As it turns out, painting small comes naturally to Brodsky. “When I paint small I’m like a fish in water,” she shared with Whitehot Magazine. “I am much less comfortable painting on a larger scale, and very few of my large works hold up as well as the miniatures.”

Her miniatures include representations of natural landscapes, animals, and architecture. There’s also a series dedicated to seemingly empty rooms, finely painted—a sort of peephole, presenting snapshots of everyday life.

According to Brodsky, her painting technique relies on a combination of classical oil painting techniques (15th century Northern Renaissance methods and 17th-century Venetian techniques) alongside contemporary materials such as mylar and plexiglass.

“When I was studying, the things I had trouble with had more to do with drawing, proportion, perspective, anatomy, architecture,” she notes. “I feel like I am still catching up and trying to master a lot of those things. But color has always come organically.”

Born in Minsk, Belarus, Brodsky moved to the US in 1991 where she studied at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before earning her MFA at the New York Academy of Art. These days, she also runs online seminars, teaching others how to build an engaged community online, so as to enhance their online presence.

Some artists strive to get close to reality in their works, while others forgo reality completely and take their art more to the side of abstraction. Then there are artists like Aiden Kringen, who like to walk that line and take the best out of both worlds.

Kringen is a well-known name in the art world thanks to his powerful portraits that blur the line between reality and abstraction. He paints portraits and figures emerging from shattered backgrounds or seeming like they were broken down into pieces that were then reassembled.

Kringen was introduced to art from early age by his mother, an artist and graphic designer, prompting him to get interested in drawing and painting. This allowed him to get familiar with different techniques, both old-school and modern, and use his keen eye for details, especially when it comes to observing people, to develop the style that has now become his calling card.

According to the statement on his website, the process of painting for him involves “balancing between reality and abstraction,” and he applies this routine “down to each single feature of the face or hand.”

“I dissect the figure using line work, dividing between tone and texture, and then reconnect the pieces along invisible planes throughout the painting,” Kringen explains.

Check out more of his work below or follow him on Instagram!

Australian artist Kate Shaw is known for her dramatic landscapes that are half real-half surreal. Formed out of paint pours and collage techniques, her landscapes capture the transcendent beauty of nature, but at the same time highlight the dangers that lurk in the shadows of a world that is over-populated and over-polluted.

“The paintings deal with the tensions and dichotomies in the depiction of the natural world and our relationship to it,” she relayed once in an interview with The Art and the Curious.

“I am concurrently exploring the sublime in nature whilst imbuing a sense of toxicity and artificiality in this depiction,” she notes.

The intention, according to Shaw, is to reflect upon the contradiction between our inherent connection to the natural world and continual distancing from it.

Using swirls of acrylic paint, ink, glitters and powders, Shaw mimics the flow of natural processes. According to Shaw, her interest in landscape painting began after a visit to Central Australia.

“A visit to Central Australia in 2004 really helped me coalesce ideas about the materiality of paint and how this could connect with the material world through landscape,” she relayed in an interview with Lost At E Minor. “The sedimentary layers of rocks literally looked like the paint I was playing around with in my studio, and it started from there.”

Having shown her work extensively throughout Australia, as well as New York, and Seoul, Shaw has also been included in prominent Australian art prizes.

According to Button, this intimacy created between object and subject is very much intentional. “I like my subjects to have a relationship, firstly with me and then with other people,” she relayed in an interview with Metal Magazine, “so most of my characters are looking right at you, demanding you engage with them.”

In fact, Button’s creative process begins with her subjects’ eyes. “I always start with the eyes, if I’m not happy with how they are looking there is no point for me carrying on – I’ll wipe the canvas and start again!” she relayed.

Based in London, Button studied at Maidstone College of Art and later completed a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration at Kingston University London. Her clients now include some top tier publications, news outlets, and brands such as BBC, Wolf Ollins, Vanity Fair, Tatler, The Times, Gallimard, and Gucci; and her work has been exhibited in the Fashion Illustration Gallery, Less is More Projects, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Coningsby gallery.

“When I reflect on the exhibitions, commissions and experiences I’ve had recently, most of it tracks back to Instagram,” she explains. “It’s been a hugely important aspect of my career lately, and through it I have met so many wonderful artists and made some absolutely amazing contacts on an international level that would simply have been out of reach before social media.”

Japanese artist Hikari Shimoda is clearly inspired by Japanese manga and anime — an inspiration she dates back to being a child. “My father was interested in anime and Manga, and he introduced me to the Studio Ghibli animated movies when I was a child,” she recalled in an interview with We Heart

According to Shimoda, she would copy the drawings and, over time, taught herself how to draw cartoons. “In addition, since I was in high school, I like looking at illustration online — which was very important for me,” she notes. “All these pieces of pop culture are very familiar in my life, ones that give the most impact.”

Her work, both charming and alarming, portrays a world where cuteness and horror coexist, expressing modern-day issues in colorful and illustrative techniques. Often depicting starry-eyed children, Shimoda dresses her characters in superhero costumes, revealing problems and struggles in contemporary society.

“For me, this is my most effective means to convey my emotions and feelings to other people,” says Shimoda, “but they are not ‘human’ children. I like to use the example of magical girls (shojo) because they are inspired by human girls but they are characters.” The result is eerie and detached, albeit increasingly cute.

Naturally, Shimoda’s work tends to create quite a buzz both online and offline. Having held exhibitions in galleries worldwide, including Japan, the United States, Canada, and Europe, she has also amassed more than 95k followers on Instagram. Here are some of our favorite pieces by her:

Sometimes, it’s not about what’s being said, it’s about what isn’t. Such is the case with Lucy Pass’ portraits. Describing herself as a “kind of anti-portrait maker,” her work features fragments of faces, poking holes in the very idea of portraiture. “The piece is then no longer about the face looking back at us, but about the feelings that it stirs and what that means about us,” Pass explains on her website.

Indeed, the finished piece invites the viewer to fill in the blanks, stressing the fractured nature of truth and the power of interpretation. “I try not to impose a clear cut narrative on the viewer,” says Pass. “My aim is to illicit an emotional response without dictating to the viewer what they should or shouldn’t be feeling.”

Based in the UK, her creative process relies on references from found photos of strangers, with particular focus on ambiguous or what seems like neutral expressions. “The unknown subject and therefore his or her unknown emotions have become an important aspect in my work,” she writes, “where I, in turn, find myself instinctively attempting to read the individual – something which gradually becomes apparent in my treatment of the work.”

The winner of the John Ruskin Prize in 2019 and the Portrait Artist of the Year 2019, Pass’ portraits are slowly but surely gathering momentum. Take a look for yourself:

With 40k followers on Instagram, Mercedes Bellido is adored by both contemporary artists and commercial brands, her paintings being both edgy and approachable. Often described as one of the new promises of contemporary painting in Spain, Bellido’s work centers around the animal kingdom, painted against lush, vibrant backgrounds.

Amongst her sources of inspiration, she mentions icons like Henri Rousseau, David Hockney, Aleksandra Waliszewska, and Giorgio De Chirico. “But I don’t get influenced only by painters or artists,” she told Drawfolio. “I get inspiration from childhood memories, things that draw my attention during the day-to-day, or books I’ve recently read,” she further relayed. “The most important thing is to find a way to make these ideas real and make them your own.”

Born in Zaragoza in 1991, Bellido moved to Cuenca to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts and later moved to Madrid to study an Art Investigation Masters Degree, but like most of her contemporaries, the internet played a major role in her success. “I think the internet is key to show your work and access content everywhere,” she explained. “A negative aspect can be that your work is more easy to steal, but that’s a risk you take before playing the internet game. The most important thing is to keep working and using the internet in an adequate fashion.”

With collaborations with brands like Zara, Nike, Chanel, Bershka, Reebok, and Urban Outfitters, you’d want to take note.

What is it about miniature representations that make our hearts explode with happiness? It might be the amount of work and patience that goes into each piece, or it might be the sheer size of it. Whatever it is, we’re always delighted to run into miniature artists.
