The past decade has seen us slowly but surely gravitating towards minimalism. Minimalist trends include Nordic design. Characterized by functionality and minimalism, Nordic clothing has an effortlessly cool edge to it.

Most recently, we’ve taken note of Swedish fashion and print designer Louise Körner. Currently based in London, Körner’s designs include anything from sportswear to costume design to bridal dresses.

An award-winning designer, Körner has won The PREMIUM YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD in Womenswear for exceptional designs as well as the SWEDISH FASHION TALENT of THE YEAR Award by The Swedish Fashion Council during Stockholm Fashion Week 2016. Her clothes were also featured in top-tier fashion magazines like Swedish ELLE and VOGUE Italia.

“Our target customer is a fashion-conscious female with high disposable income, aged 19-55 years,” she reflected in an interview with Fashion Angel.

“Works within the fashion, finance, media and the arts, socializes and travels regularly therefore demanding a constant need to renew her wardrobe. She would also ideally like comfort and individuality.”

A mix of high-quality solid fabrics with elegant details, Körner’s clothes can be spotted in music videos, fashion films, and on celebrities and fashion bloggers, and for good reason! If you’re a fan of practical minimalism, you’d want to check her out.

Interior designs will tell you that lighting design plays a key role in creating the right mood and adjusting the ambiance of interior spaces. A good lamp is not only a source of light but can actually be a room’s centerpiece.

Lately, we’ve been taken by Przemek Krawczyński’s one-of-a-kind lamps. Made of gourd—a dried tropical fruit found in Senegal, Guinea, and Mali—they are intricately carved, their patterns reflected on the walls and ceiling when lit.

Inspired by fractal art, geometry, and harmonious patterns and constructions, his work is made with precision and includes a lot of planning ahead.

“In my projects, I look for harmony and cohesion,” writes the Polish sculptor on his website. “I enjoy complicated, varied, and composite patterns; nothing about their arrangement is random.”

As such, completing a piece might take months at a time, with the finished result truly a one of kind. “Sometimes the designing stage is the longest and the most difficult, but most of the time the carving and the drilling are the most labor-intensive,” says Krawczyński.

Working with organic material, the first stage is skinning the gourd and cleaning the inside, after which the patterns are drawn on the gourd, using previously applied grids.

“Once the pattern is designed I engrave the contours. The next steps is marking the place of every single hole and painting of the gourd.”

Here are some of our favorite creations by him.

Here at 5dwallpaper, we’re suckers for all things digital, so we were delighted to find visual artist and 3D illustrator Sonal Jadhav while scrolling idly on Instagram.

With an emphasis on minimalism and typography, Jadhav’s work serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities found in digital art. Indeed, in an interview with Ballpitmag, Jadhav admitted she’s drawn to this medium because it’s very forgiving.

“It gives me the freedom to experiment constantly,” said Jadhav. Her experimentations include architectural drawings, greeting cards, and a series dedicated to the English alphabet. “I live to create illustrations that are pleasing to the senses.”

Born in India, Jadhav got her Master’s degree in Supinfocom Rubika (a computer graphics university), after which she worked at an indie game studio in the Netherlands, where she’s lived ever since. But according to Jadhav, her cultural background—growing up in Mumbai—is very much present throughout her work.

These days, her work includes editorial illustrations and advertising campaigns, with clients like Microsoft Build, FOUR magazine, and British Petroleum. She also has her own online shop, where she sells postcards and art prints. You can also follow her progress online through Instagram.

Scrolling through Naim Josefi’s Instagram page, the phrase “fashion-forward” jumps to mind. The Iranian Swedish fashion designer is known for his high-end streetwear brand (think high-end denim), introducing technology into fashion and celebrating innovation.

“We use technology in many of our products,” Josefi told Make It Last. One example for Josefi’s clever use of technology is incorporating laser printing into his work, so as to make his products more sustainable. “Laser printing is not a new technique, but it has not been applied in fashion on a large scale before,” he notes.

According to Josefi, in the case of denim, laser printers can be used both for design and coloring purposes. While most surface designs on denim are produced by bleaching, Josefi’s alternative method proves to be more sustainable. “Through laser printing, we don’t need to wash the denim as much to bring out the design or the character,” he explains.

Another clever way in which Josefi incorporates laser printers is by 3D printing shoes. In this regard, Josefi is a pioneer, producing the world’s first 3D printed shoe. A newer version of the printed shoe was released earlier this year, with only 10 pieces per color.

Aside from laser printing, Josefi also introduced the world to steel denim, created using a yarn of actual steel. According to Josefi, steel can be melted down and reused an unlimited amount of times, making it a much more appealing material in terms of sustainability. Talk about being fashion-forward!

Filipino-born, Australia-based fashion designer, artist, and brand couturier Rhea Ornias has creativity bursting out of her. With five years of studies in architecture and more than 10 years of expertise in fashion behind her, she’s also a writer and poet, with her illustrations often accompanied with short, romantic poems. In other words: Ornias is a true Renaissance woman, who enjoys the juxtaposition of different mediums and aesthetic fields.

Like most creatives, Ornias traces back her passion for the arts to her early childhood. “When I was 3 years old, I saw my aunt who was taking up architecture, painting a teardrop for her visual class,” she recalled in an interview with I Love Illustration. It was then, as she watched the way in which the brushstroke and oil color came to life, that the creative seeds were planted. “From then on, I fell in love with the arts especially painting,” she notes.

As a trained fashion designer with a background in architecture, Ornias’ styles tends to blend masculinity with a drop of romanticism. Her affair with writing came a little later, with her interest in branding most recent. “My poetry is about finding your authentic self, amidst chaos in this world,” she explains. “I hope it will inspire self- love and courage not to sell out the dream. Life is more than being liked.”

With her collaborative work, Ornias’ mission is to support intentional individualism and make a mark through the materials she puts forward. A fan of Jane Austin, Elizabeth Gilbert, Heston Blumenthal, and Rupi Kaur, her work will have you mystified.

Growing up, Michael William Lester thought of illustration as a kind of magic. “My dad used to draw a lot,” recalled the creative in an interview with Lecture in Progress. “As a kid, I would go to bed and he would ask me if I wanted a surprise drawing or something in particular. It was kind of magic to never see the process, it fuelled my intrigue – how was it done, how could I do it?”

According to Lester, this early introduction to illustration proved to have a huge influence on his career choice. Now a full-time designer, animator, and yes—illustrator—his work is often clean and minimal, cutting straight to the chase.

Having studied fine art in college, in turn, had led him to illustration at the university. “These two steps helped me progress more naturally into animation,” he explains. “If I’d have gone straight into animation I’d have missed out on improving my visual style and writing skills.”

Some of his more viral work include the world’s smallest portfolio and his character buildings (where he animated architectural landmarks, adding them some quirky personalities). “Personal projects allow you to steer your career,” says Lester, “it’s much more difficult to control where you are heading if you only do client work.”

With the future looking grimmer by the minute, it’s little wonder most of us seek comfort in the past. There’s a craving for nostalgia—for ’70s and ’90s fashion, old record players, and glossy magazines. Sign painter Chris Mackenzie-Gray turns nostalgia into function, producing and hand-painting signs that speak the language of dem olden days.

His sign-painting services range from very small door numbers to large-scale murals. “We work on all kinds of surfaces including brick walls, gloss, shop faces and glass and for a wide range of clients – from very commercial to very independent,” Mackenzie-Gray relayed in an interview with Lecture in Progress, where he promoted his sign-painting business, based in the UK.

Having studied graphic design with a focus on typography at LCC, Mackenzie-Gray was drawn to the analog processes of writing. “With a computer, it’s not difficult to change the layout or grid, whereas with letterpress, you have to really think about what you’re doing because it’s such a faff to change something,” he explained.

“I did a whole bunch of research into sign painting, and one of my tutors shut down the idea,” he admits. “Maybe they didn’t consider it graphic design, or a viable job but I just remember thinking, ‘well, that’s not something I’m going to think about again.’ I really enjoyed graphic design, but sitting at a computer nine hours a day would have left me feeling very drained.”

Designer Danielle Baskin had an interesting idea about how to solve a problem many people are facing now that face masks are a requirement. Many devices, starting from our smartphones, have a face recognition feature that lets them unlock without contact, and this is impossible when half of your face is covered with a mask.

Baskin’s idea includes printing a photo of your face on the mask so that you still look like yourself when you wear it. She uses machine-washable cotton to make the masks so they’re nice and gentle against your face. And if you like the idea but don’t want to provide your own photo, her company Maskalike can print you a mask with a Hide the Pain Harold‘s face on it, so that you can “look permanently uncomfortable, trying to be happy”.

Would you wear a mask with your face printed on it or do you think it’s a bit too much? We believe it could really be useful in some situations but we have yet to see how popular Baskin’s product will become.

Kimou Meyer, aka Grotesk, is a force to be reckoned with. Over the past ten years, the Swiss designer has worked with almost all the key players in New York’s brand underground, drawing on his classical training and outsider’s perspective to develop an iconic graphic language and style.

Having moved to NYC in 1999 to work for a European design agency, he has settled into the New York scene fairly quickly. In the process of discovering the unique visual language of the Brooklyn streets, things such as hand painted signs and sport logos, he found that his approach to design and the creation of his own work took a drastic turn.

“I think minimalist and efficiency is the Swiss way of communicating,” he reflected in an interview with The Hundreds. “You are surrounded by great design all the time, so I guess it’s a subconscious natural inspiration. It’s obviously a very strong inspiration for me.” But while his previous focus had been the design of minimalist catalogs, logos and branding systems, he found that there was a lot more fun to be had in creating t-shirts, skateboards and silk screens for his friends.

“How does a Swiss born, Belgian trained, graphic designer end up doing t-shirts for Spike Lee, collaborating with Bushwick graffiti vandals, and earning a Phd in vintage American sports uniforms?” reads his cheeky bio. Grotesk’s answer? “I think it’s a mix of many things. My parents were a huge early influence. I grew up in their woodshop where they were making scale models for architects. I was always drawing and building things with them. Then I got really heavy in the skate punk culture in the mid-1980s and then into DJ-ing and hip hop. I did a lot of flyers and zines in that time. That’s where I realized that I could make a career of design. I went to art school to study design and communication, as I knew this was my passion.”

With a bit of luck and bucketload of determination, his passion for all things design turned into a successful career. You’d want to take note:

When it comes to her designs, Alice Isaac is definitely the cool kid on the block. A freelance image maker and animator based in South East London, she thrives in creating engaging content by combining her passion for hand-collaged imagery, layered with digital processes and effects.

And with her selected clients including brands like Reebok, Nike, Prada, Flaunt Magazine, and singer Billie Eilish, her work is both fashionable and fresh. “I gravitate quite heavily towards fashion imagery, faces, and the human form in general,” shared Isaac in an interview with D&AD. “It has always been my default, it’s a realm that feels very familiar and comfortable to me.”

She admits to having a bit of an obsession when it comes to fashion magazines. But Isaac’s work isn’t fashionable in the traditional sense, as she seeks to transcend the stereotypical notions of what fashion or beauty “should” look like.

With most of her images formed as a sort of colorful mashup, Isaac’s work is best categorized as collage. “Collage is a brilliant medium to pick up quickly when you can’t draw well,” she explains. “I think a lot of my style actually comes from not being able to draw or animate very well. I developed something that was achievable within my skillset, so everything is kept it quite simple but trying to elevate it in the coolest way possible.”

The result make for a unique take on the work “fashion”.
