]]>First of all, his skill is impeccable. So if you’re someone who truly appreciates art that can be backed up with refined technique, Howlett has got you covered. You’ll never be left feeling like you’re not looking at something truly professional.
Next, his vision and style is something special. If you’re someone who needs to be inspired by an artist’s mission, you may fall in love with Howlett’s. While his goal’s are somewhat open to interpretation, it’s clear he’s someone that focuses on surrealist art that makes you think.
For instance, Howlett loves painting portraits of living human giants, and he often depicts lying down in the wilderness with the mountains. The paintings truly are something like you’ve never seen before, and they make you question what it’s trying to say. Perhaps we, too, are all giants in the real world—but in our own special way.

]]>Describing himself as a “romantic surrealist”, his paintings are inspired not only by the surrealist movement but by Art Nouveau, Belle Époque, Gothic, Renaissance, and the Victorian age.
Merriam’s paintings often present fantastical settings: a house harnessed to an elephant that is being ridden by a monkey; a winged butler presenting a tray filled with birds to a hungry cat.
According to the painter, nature plays a big role in his art. “My world was fashioned from the rawness of nature’s reality and the fanciful treatments of my perception,” he reflected once in an interview with Putsch.
According to Merriam, from a very young age he was drawn to the natural world: “Between sailing, fishing, and diving I had spent as much time in the water as I did out,” he recalled.
Water in particular is a common theme in his paintings. “Both my family and our community possessed a whimsical quality that remains in my art to this day,” stressed Merriam.
With over 45,500 followers on his Instagram alone, Merriam’s work is celebrated both online and offline. His work is exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. In one case, his paintings were shown alongside those of Salvador Dali. You’d want to take note.

]]>According to Vidal Agulló, she herself has always gravitated towards art. Having learned to draw at an early age, Vidal Agulló had studied at Escola Massana in Barcelona and by the age of 16 had started working as an apprentice in Taller de Escenografia Castells Planas in St. Agnès de Malanyanes.
“In the beginning, I did nothing but drawings,” she shared with Juxtapoz. “Later on, I tried to add color to them, but only plain colors. The effect was rather that of an illustration. It was only two years ago that I tried to apply chiaroscuro effects to my sketches.”
These days, Vidal Agulló isn’t afraid of experimenting both with color and size, with some of her paintings sprawling across walls. Her playful inclination also comes through her subject matter, imagining a world that is similar to ours but then again, very different.
“I like to play with gravity since it is such a sacred law,” she admits. “And playing with it can have astonishing results. I set elements in different orientations in order to talk about the different points of view we all have in our environments.” Enter her disorienting spaces—but with caution!

]]>Taking a maximalist approach, the viewer is presented with a hyper-detailed scene that invites repeated exploration—if you dare step inside.
“I create spaces for the viewer to explore and respond to however they will,” he remarked once in an interview with Indigits. “So in that sense, the interpretation is open and free.”
Born in rural Ontario, Borrett is currently based in Toronto, where he works in the visual effects industry for both TV and film. Having graduated from the Illustration Program at the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1998, his work blends traditional drawing with digital techniques.
According to Borrett, his work often highlights the tension between security and insecurity: “I often draw spaces that you might want to hide in or hide from, or where outside and inside are blurred. Protective walls are breached.”
A natural-born builder who’d grown up on Lego, his work is also very much a dialogue with the natural world. “The natural world inspires me most,” says Borrett, “the way it resolves into infinite detail in both directions, if you have the eyes or instruments to look closely enough.”

]]>All her paintings are composed of several layers of paint, meticulously placed on each other. She works mainly with blue pigments because of her love for the ocean. This color is accented by green, white, and brown hues for seafoam, sand, and aquatic plants.
To Mae, her art is more about method and approach. She sees painting as large scale depictions that can form ways to escape reality. Mae didn’t get any formal training but has still managed to carve a niche for herself in this competitive industry.

]]>There’s nothing wrong with using photo manipulation software like Photoshop, but some artists simply prefer to go without it. John Dykstra is among them, but when you see his work, you’ll find it difficult to believe that this is all done without Photoshop.
For the time being, he’s using his parents’ garage as a studio. “Since I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford my own studio space until I had my feet on the ground, my parents lent me their garage space to use as my dedicated studio,” the artist says.
