Sustainability and humor lie at the core of NYC based jewelry brand Garbage – both elements evident in the brand’s name. “Our name is Garbage, but we care a lot about leaving as little of it behind as possible,” reads their website.

Run by jewelry designers Elise Shatz and Shelby Scudder, the majority of their products are cast from recycled metals. In order to minimize overproduction and waste, everything is “made to order” with sustainable practices. “We acknowledge that there will always be countless ways to improve,” the two designers noted in an interview with Buzzwork, “especially as the business grows, and we strive to learn more every day.”

Their products include charms and necklaces, all made of gold and silver. Every component is sourced in the United States and assembled locally, with none of the production taking place somewhere they can’t see with their own eyes. In order to reduce further waste, the two found a caster in New York that primarily uses recycled metals.

But while sustainability is clearly important to both Shatz and Scudder, humor is another part of the equation. “Avoiding ‘preachiness’ is a huge priority for us,” they admit, “so humor definitely plays a role in the way we communicate our values.” As such, their designs are meant to be taken with a grain of salt. It’s the sort of ironic/nostalgic accessories you’d want to sport.

Baylee Ann Zwart is passionate about creating fine jewelry options for modern women – the type of jewelry that might feel approachable for everyday wear, but special enough to invest in. Made of 18k gold and platinum, AZLEE’s pieces are crafted in Los Angeles by masters in their field.

Her pieces are a blend of modern and traditional, with personal influences that include French Art Deco as well as Zwart’s fascination with ancient civilizations. “I’ve always loved the Art Deco era of jewelry,” she shared in an interview with Flaunt.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2634uAnnjq/

“It was so architectural and linear with the use of such unusual shapes of stones and diamonds, and I design in a very linear way, so I have loved creating a more modern take on Deco. On the other hand, I’ve also been fascinated by ancient civilizations for as long as I can remember, so being able to create ancient-looking coins, in solid gold was always an ambition of mine, and so was combining those two worlds, Ancient and Deco, and that’s really the voice and foundation of our collection.”

Her love affair with jewelry began while in Guatemala, working for a fair-trade non-profit with local artisans. It was there, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, that she began to study the art of jewelry metalworking and was immediately enamored with the notion of being able to sculpt pieces from the ground up that could be worn every day and passed down from generation to generation.

“I also have kept distribution strategic, so that when clients come across our brand they feel like they’ve discovered it, and it won’t be something all of their friends have,” she adds. It might be that special gift you’d want to gift yourself after the holiday season is done and over with.

Sophie Filomena has many talents to her name. A designer, stylist, and illustrator, she also runs her own online store, where she sells what she describes as “statement art, for your ears and eyes,” meaning: earrings and prints.

Her colorful designs make for eye-popping accessories, but she admits that while striving toward a career in illustration, she never imagined she’d also become a jewelry designer. “I’ve always been an illustrator and have been working towards making a living from that, ever since I can remember,” she shared with Shift Magazine. “The jewelry was a spur of the moment project I decided to have a go at in the summer of last year (2017). A couple of people saw my designs on social media and asked to buy them, since then it steadily became a small business!”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Y3sDOB6Q-/

According to Filomena, her bold and bespoke brand is inspired by the ’80s aesthetic as well as the Memphis Milano cultural phenomenon of Italian design, with her work aiming to empower other people. “I take inspiration from my childhood, such as ’80s music I grew up with and the geometric composition of Memphis Milano.” she relayed. “My designs have recently become more botanical, creating flower details on hoop earrings – preparing my new collection for the summer. With my drop dangles, I’m aiming to get crazier with the shapes and designs, hopefully appealing to a wider audience.”

Her pieces very much revolve around shape and color. “Usually, the color palette is the first thing I focus on and I continue from there,” she says. “Occasionally, I find making a few sketches helps record the idea down if it’s particularly intricate. But overall, I just make it up as I go along. I think the immediate rawness shows through sometimes.”

Jewelry designer Naida C. Castel doesn’t wish to impose herself on the materials she works with but, rather, lets the materials lead her in her quest for imperfection. The result is, what she calls “rough and meaningful jewelry.” Slow handcrafted in Barcelona, her pieces feel very much personal – something you might want to pass on to your children.

Inspired by raw gemstones, flowers, and textures, she admires beauty in all of its forms. “She believes there is a fascinating mystery to life and the things around her,” reads her website. “With a female perspective on the world, she defends the true nature of things.”

Having studied art and product design, she’s since been on the move, traveling as much as she can, and experiencing new cultures while meeting new people. These experienced are later translated through her original pieces.

Based on small productions and handmade or modeled materials, her jewelry studio also pays attention to the environment by recycling unused metals. You can admire some of her creations in the gallery below:

Founded by Suzzan Atala, Tuza has maintained from the very beginning a made-to-order model in its workshop in the heart of Mexico City. As an outcome, they’ve been able to create jobs for raisins and support local suppliers, as well as provide fair pay to the jewelers, artisans, and craftsmen (& women!) of Mexico City.

Atala also sees the brand as part of the female empowerment movement by creating a community in Tuza Mexico City. Every season, her brand donates a portion of proceeds to female-led organisations dedicated to empowering women to lead in the fight against political, economic, environmental and health crisis across the world.

So now you can own a handmade piece that was both assembled by skilled jewelers and helped change the world, one day at a time. Sounds good to us! Take a look at some of Tuza’s collections in the gallery below and be sure to visit their website for more info:

Layla Alter’s jewelry collection will, without doubt, add a whimsical twist to your outfit. Launched in 2018, in her native city, New York, her brand, Alterita, has caught the attention of publications like Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Refinery29.

A child at heart, Alter’s collections feature beachy designs and fresh feminine themes – things like glass charms, cherry earrings, and heart-shaped necklaces. It’s kitsch, but the playful kind of kitsch you’d want to sport.

She began collecting her charms in 2018 from Mexico and Southeast Asia and has made a series of one-of-a-kind pieces, which resulted in an exclusive collection with Opening Ceremony. Now, Alterita’s newest collection features glass charms handmade locally by artist Mariko Makino at Brooklyn Glass studio.

“I’m very childish at heart,” admitted Alter in an interview with Teen Vogue. “I’m very connected to my younger self.” And talking about her latest collection she added: “I was like, ‘What would I want to wear on the beach?’ I want to be wearing lemons. I want a headband.” It’s that kind of playful attitude which got her to where she is today.

Akiko Shinzato’s jewelry is meant as social commentary – conceptual pieces that question our ideas about beauty, rather than simple accessories. In one collection, Shinzato tackles people’s obsession with their appearances. In another, jewelry pieces are made to serve as ironic “self-confidence boosters” that hold your chin in place or crack a smile.

“We treat our appearances according to how we want to be seen by others and put this alternative veil of identity on the faces,” reads her website. “In other words, our appearances can be modified and manipulated as we wish.”

Her body modification pieces are thought-provoking, to say the least. “The material is not important,” she says in an interview with Cotonoha. “I usually begin with a concept, then create the design, and finally select the materials. While in school, I realized that I didn’t need to limit myself to a particular type of material. I wanted to broaden my horizons.”

“For me, jewelry that in one way or another connects with the human body is more than just ordinary jewelry,” says Shinzato. “You can touch it and enjoy it as conceptual art, or you can wear it as you would an ordinary piece of jewelry. This kind of jewelry is not merely placed on the body, but rather, becomes one with its wearer. Its conceptual jewelry. Its contemporary jewelry. “
