She Didn’t Know How to Draw but Dedicated a Decade to Learn

Maiko is a Japanese illustrator living and working in New York. Growing up, she always dreamed about expressing herself, so when she hit her 20s she tried becoming an actress, comedian, and DJ. Although she wasn’t the most successful in these areas, she didn’t give up on her dreams.

“Then I thought if I had a pen and paper, I can express myself. Even though I didn’t really know how to draw, if I study hard for 10 years, I think I can have a little confidence in what I’m doing,” the artist said in an interview for Ballpit. “I’ve studied drawing by myself for about 10 years now. I wasn’t confident enough to show my works to people for a long time but I started posting my illustration on Instagram last year.”

When creating her art, she usually puts ideas and images into her notebook, and only then she starts to draw and paint by digital. However, her favorite mediums besides digital are also watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils, and pastel, depending on the image.
