Cincinnati-based illustrator and graphic designer Nicholas Moegly is an expert in creating nostalgic artworks. He does this by focusing his illustrations on familiar settings, serene moments, and a captivating play of light and shadows that create the mood and mesmerize the viewer.
Most of Moegly’s works are set at night and feature limited sources of light from street lamps or windows breaking the dark. According to the artist, by picking this time of the day, he is able to “create quiet, serene moments.” The style he nurtures also has a lot to do with Edward Hopper’s iconic “Nighthawks,” which was one of his early influences, and his fascination with nighttime photography.
Moegly is probably best known for collaborations with various music acts like Dave Matthews Band, Ray LaMontagne, and The Head and the Heart, for which he created album covers, tour posters, and merch art. His nostalgia-filled artworks proved to be popular with high-profile companies, international apparel makers, and beverage brands, which used it in their marketing campaigns.
When he’s not doing commission work, Moegly creates artworks that he shares with his followers on social media or exhibits in galleries all over the world. Check out more of his illustrations below.
