Dolaana Davaá is an artist of many talents, who found a way to express herself through everything from paintings, clothing, and masks. Her creations are walking a fine line between fascinating and bizarre, and that certainly applies to her signature “melting paintings” that helped her find viral fame.
Davaá is a Tuvinian artist based in Milan, who mastered several painting and sculptural methods after moving from Russia to Italy to study at the Italian Arts Academy of Brera in Milan. She gained a new appreciation for Italian Renaissance paintings during her studies and came up with a creative way to put a twist on some of her favorites.
She started working on her signature “liquid paintings”, which are inspired by her longing to destroy and melt down her artistic academic formation to make room for contemporary art.
“The main topic of artwork is to rethink the canons of old art, forcing the picture to melt or make the classic art objects of simple decoration. My creations combine ideas, desires and inspirations of my inner child with my adult aesthetic and significant view,” she writes on her official website.
Some of Davaá’s melting paintings are her own designs, while others pay homage to famous works of art. We’ve seen her put her own twist on “Ophelia” by John Everett Millais, “Madonna della Seggiola” by Raffaello, and “The Last Day of Pompeii” by Karl Bryullov, among many other works.
