There’s something incredibly calming about strolling down the beach and looking for beautiful seashells—and Anna Chan managed to turn this common hobby into an art form. She’s making mesmerizing animal sculptures with beautiful seashells she found on the beach.

Chan is a New York-based artist who spent over two decades working in the jewelry industry, and even did a five-year tenure with Tiffany and Co. before starting her own brand. Her work slowed down during COVID-19 lockdowns, and this was when she discovered a new passion – collecting seashells with her daughter and transforming them into works of art.

Chan collects most of her seashells locally in New York, and she works from a home studio in her garage. After years of working with clay, wax, and metal, she’s now using sand, shells, and pebbles to bring her artworks to life, and she enjoys their intuitive nature.

“The seashells are like little jewels to me, each one a mosaic piece finding its place in the big picture. I’m inspired by their colors, texture, and shapes, and even the broken pieces, I find beauty in it,” she told My Modern Met.

Chan’s sculptures usually take the shape of animals, from turtles and crabs to lions and elephants, and she always makes sure that the shells she’s using match their characteristics.

The beauty of Scottish beaches knows no bounds, and one artist found an interesting way to capture it in its full glory. Dorothy of Traigh Alba is collecting shells, pebbles, and sea glass from the Scottish coastline and she’s arranging them into beautiful works of art.

Dorothy’s seashells are collected all over Scotland, and she uses ethical practices of beach combing to keep her work as sustainable as possible. She only collects materials that are naturally washed onto the shore, only taking small quantities of empty shells and picking up litter that she stumbles upon along the way.

She opted for the name Traigh Alba because it means “Scotland beach” in Gaelic, and it perfectly reflects her body of work, composed of objects she personally collected from the shores of Scotland.

“It’s the beautiful wildness and endless variety of the Scottish coastline that inspires my collection of artworks… My pictures authentically reflect the special place they come from, mirroring the biology and geology of Scottish beaches,” the artist writes on her Etsy page.

Traigh Alba’s artwork is usually labeled with a specific beach, island, or area, and she’s hoping she’ll help other people connect to these places by capturing some of their beauty.

Nature-inspired art is not a novelty in the world of embroidery, but Sinem Güler found a way to put a unique twist on it. The artist behind Mutluluk Panosu is a true master when it comes to stitching together succulent embroidery, and her creations often involve real wood.

Güler comes from Turkey, and she was just six years old when she stumbled upon the magical world of embroidery. This art form allowed her to explore her love for nature through a new medium, and she mostly focuses on botanical motifs in her work.

What sets Güler apart from other nature-inspired embroidery artists are discarded pieces of wood featured in her art. She personally collected pieces of wood from the mountains of Turkey, making sure to only use pieces of wood that have completed their life cycle to make her work as eco-friendly as possible.

You’ll especially like Güler’s creations if you love plants, but struggle to take care of them because her succulents don’t require any attention to stay alive.

“I hang the pots of my flowers that will never fade later on these trees and bring you a unique hoop… You can always touch this piece of wood taken from nature and be enchanted by the unique nature of Turkey,” she explains on Instagram.

Azuma Makoto is a Japanese artist who specializes in flower art and botanical sculptures. One of Makoto’s most intriguing projects is Frozen Flowers, in which the artist creates astonishing flower sculptures on a frozen lake located on Hokkaidō island.

Makoto made his first Frozen Flowers sculpture back in 2018. It consisted of various floral arrangements that were put stacked on top of each other and then covered with water to freeze. The ice ended up forming a uniquely-shaped sculpture that showcased the vibrant color of the flowers.

After the success of the first installation, Makoto made another in 2021 before returning to make a third one earlier in February. Each time, the weather conditions were different, causing a unique look for each version. This is part of the reason why Makoto intends to continue returning to the same site in the future and make more Frozen Flowers.

Makoto and his collaborators work on the installations at night, when the temperatures are the lowest. By the morning, the finished sculpture appears, ready to be captured on camera before dissolving under the heat of the sun.

With Frozen Flowers and his other floral works, Makoto aims to “increase the existential value of flowers by finding out the most mysterious figure only owned by flowers and plants and converting it to the artistic expression.”

For artist Stephen Wong Chun Hei, traveling and hiking aren’t just about discovering new places and feeling closer to the world that surrounds us; these activities also provide him with inspiration for his colorful landscapes.

While outdoors, Hei usually brings his sketchbook with him to capture the basic outlines of the landscapes he sees. When he gets back to his studio, he combines the sketch with his memories of the particular place and transfers them to canvas.

“When I work on canvas, I also got the feeling of travel with every brushstroke and color used,” he shared in a recent chat with Colossal.

Hei’s paintings are characterized by the vivid, saturated colors that he uses in unexpected ways. This includes purple trees, pink hills, and blue leaves. According to the artist, the “unrealistic” approach helps him to capture the “ever-changing” nature of the landscapes as opposed to capturing “just one moment in a landscape.”

Hei mainly exhibits his works in native Hong Kong, with some of them being part of the permanent collection at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. His colorful landscapes can also be enjoyed on his website and social media profiles. Check out more of them below.

Amazing things can happen when nature and fashion come together, and Ritual Remains Jewelry is a case in point. Carefully crafted by a creative duo Helen and Tavo, these beautiful jewels replicate nature in metal form.

Helen and Tavo formed Ritual Remains in 2016, while they both resided in Oakland, California. Life took them in different directions in the years to come, and Helen is now based in Sonoma County, but that didn’t stop them from continuing their partnership and growing their small business.

Helen and Tavo were initially brought together by their mutual love for the outdoors. They’re both self-taught and prolific creatives, and Ritual Remains was born out of their “shared love of metal jewelry making and a shared vision to create wearable art that mirrors the natural world”, according to the duo’s official website.

Their metal jewelry is 100% handmade and they went through a long process of trial and error before mastering their craft. They’re on a mission to replicate nature into metal form, but they’re no strangers to experimenting with silver and gold.

They make everything from earrings and rings to necklaces and hair pins, and they’re best known for their lone pine pendants and earrings.

Most artists want their artworks to last forever and end up being consumed by their pursuit of immortality. UK artist Hannah Bullen-Ryner, on the other hand, values the beauty of ephemeral art and the way its “mortality” makes it special.

Bullen-Ryner creates temporary animal portraits using found material. She collects branches, leaves, pebbles, and everything else she can find in nature and starts forming her artwork on the spot. The finished pieces are left where they are to be “blown away on the breeze.”

“I lay my emotions down on the ground, and they blow away. That is a very cathartic experience,” she explains on her website.

According to the artist, she never knows what she will create before actually starting to do it. The material she finds and her mood often lead the way.

“Sometimes I want to make something cute and uplifting, other times it’s more dark or energetic,” Bullen-Ryner adds.

Despite working with limited material, Bullen-Ryner manages to recreate the facial features of her subjects in great detail. And fortunately, her works actually never disappear completely, as she snaps a few photos to share them with her social media followers. Occasionally, Bullen-Ryner also creates prints of her temporary animal portraits that she sells on Etsy.
