Matthew Wills is Making Fun of Fantasy Tropes Through His Silly Sword Comics

We’ve seen many webcomics that center on a very specific theme, but Matthew Wills truly took things up a notch when he decided to start his own. He found viral fame and built a whole new world through his Swords Comic, which are making fun of popular fantasy tropes.

According to Wills’ official description on Instagram, these webcomics are “set in a fantasy world where the use of magical swords is commonplace” and follow the adventures of many different characters, from ambitious kings to brave knights.

The illustrator from Wellington, New Zealand worked on several series of webcomics before this one become a sensation, and it all started as a happy accident. He initially drew a silly webcomic about a doofus knight looking for a sword, and it was such a huge success that he wanted to keep it up because it was obvious that he tapped into something special.

A few years down the road, Wills is making several Swords Comic a week, and he’s showing no signs of stopping. He built a whole lore, with the most beloved characters he keeps on revesting time and time again. His main mission is to put a silly twist on familiar fantasy tropes, but he’s no stranger to addressing current events through his comics.
