Cancer Survivor Inspires Other Women Through Photography

Giedre Gomes is a cancer survivor whose experience prompted her to photograph other mothers going through cancer treatments. In 2018, she was diagnosed with BRCA1 gene, the same gene that Angelina Jolie has, which means her chances of getting breast cancer and ovarian cancer were high due to her family history.

She decided to do a preventive double mastectomy with nipple spearing and reconstruction on March, 2019. Ten days later she went in for a check-up to find out she was now stage 1, triple negative, most aggressive breast cancer survivor.

Gomes considers herself very blessed as she found her disease very early. She has lost her grandmother and aunt to the horrible disease.

In her pictures, she captures moms going through breast, colon, and thyroid cancers. Her work is very inspiring, giving many women the hope and courage to overcome their illness.
