Artist Transforms Flip-Flops Into Sought-After Statues

There is nothing as good as using your talent to make the world a better place. Meet Francis Mutua, an artist from Nairobi whose goal is to save the over-polluted ocean, piece by piece, through his art.

In his latest project, he works with an organization named Ocean Sole that aims to clean the earth by tackling plastic pollution.

Among the billion tons of plastic waste that has been thrown in the ocean, a large portion is made of flip flops. Apart from polluting the ocean and destroying marine life, these flip flops dumped in the ocean block waterways that provide clean water to communities.

Mutua and Ocean Sole recycle over 74 tons of lost flip-flops per year, transforming them into stunning statues of animals in all shapes and sizes. In 2017 the team recycled more than 500,000 flip-flops. According to Mutua, they can create up to 8 animals per day and most of them are sold abroad.
