Alec McDonald suffers from what he calls a “bad brain.” The comedian and comic artist has been dealing with anxiety and depression for years. The unfunny-funny thing about that is that many people suffering from depression try to deal with it through humor.
This is exactly what McDonald did. Yet, more recently, he accepted that his diagnosed clinical depression is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, and finally started taking medicine after years of solely dealing with it through humor.
While McDonald accepts that a medicinal approach is important in treating his condition, it never stopped him from turning his experience into a darkly humorous comic that is very relatable to people who have similarly suffered from depression or anxiety.
Although there is nothing really funny about these conditions, in the wise words of Monty Python’s Life of Brian: “life’s a laugh and death’s a joke.” At the end of the day, laughter can help us get a bit of perspective about our life and put our suffering into context. Humor can at least be a temporary remedy until we find more permanent ways to deal with our suffering.
