While most architecture lovers are fascinated with beautiful buildings, Hannes Coudenys photographs ugly Belgian houses. These are not the typical houses you’re used to seeing. Instead, they prove to be unique and innovative architectural solutions. Coudenys opened his dedicated account more than 7 years ago and it slowly became a favorite amongst design enthusiasts.
According to Coudenys, tourists are especially fascinated with the strange buildings in his country. If you want to experience this phenomenon, he recommends that you visit smaller towns. The bigger ones still feature ugly Belgian houses, but not as often. Coudenys even published a book, sharing his favorite buildings.
“Opinions were divided. Some didn’t agree at all that this or that house should be labeled as ‘ugly’. Yes, I admit, it’s not always ugly houses as such, but maybe more ‘special houses,'” says Coudenys.
