]]>“Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium,” they write on their website. “It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it into something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”
Drawn towards the imaginative aspect of storytelling, the duo believes that paper is a great medium to reflect the many shades and depths a good story contains. To that, they add light, creating paper cut shadow boxes assembled in wooden boxes. Their back-lit light boxes incorporate flexible LED strip lights, making the end result really pop.
It’s an art form that relies on the dichotomy between light and dark. “What amazes us about the paper cut light boxes are the dichotomy of the piece in its lit and unlit state, the contrast is so stark that it has this mystical effect on the viewers,” they explain.

]]>“The way to make a basic paper cutting is to first draw a sketch on thin paper, put it on top of a black sheet of paper, which will become the final work, and then cut the two pieces together,” Fukuda further explained in an interview with X-Ray Magazine. According to her, the sketch makes or breaks the finished piece. “My work is either good or bad based on the sketch and its completeness,” she says.
“To make one artwork, I combine white paper, artistic skill, cutting techniques with a three-dimensional feeling on one piece of paper,” addsFukuda. Some of her more outstanding pieces include paper cut animals, with a special focus on marine life and underwater creatures.
“I would like to express depth and a three-dimensional feeling with my paper cutting art,” she further explains. “Therefore, I make large works, carefully using the contrast of the thickness and thinness of the line.”

]]>Each of his pieces begins with a drawn pattern, which he traces and transfers to sculpture paper. He then cuts each one with a scalpel or X-acto knife on a cutting mat, using very small amounts of glue to assemble the figure piece by piece. “The cuts and texture are often tiny and very delicate but due to the numerous glue joints for every piece, the overall strength is substantial,” he writes on his website, assuring that the finished product isn’t as fragile as it seems. “Tests of the bond between glue and paper reveal that when deliberately forced, the paper tears while the glue seam remains intact.”
His journey to paper art began while taking graphic design classes in college, where he studied paper as a medium. Several years later, in 1983, while designing a menu for a client, he discovered a paper sculpture artist in Toronto and approached him about collaborating. “His work and the art form really appealed to me and I immediately began my experiments with various papers that I had become familiar with through the graphics trade,” he recalled.
“I developed my art to the point where I blended many of my passions-wildlife, the natural world, photography, design, model making, sculpture, light and shadow and have managed to indulge all of them,” Nicholls shared in an interview with the Daily Mail. “When I started out in the early 1980’s I didn’t see this being my job nearly 30 years later,” he admitted.

]]>It all started in 2018, when they took on the 365 days challenge, sharing their progress on Instagram. “We took up the 365 days challenge of creating Miniature birds using paper and watercolors for this entire year of 2018,” they told Bored Panda. “The concept of this miniatures is to express the intricacy and vibrancy of the birds around us. We used the technique of layered paper cutting to give volume to the artworks and get a three-dimensional feel to them.”
Their rich portfolio of miniature birds includes exotic birds, as well as more common ones. Their birds are photographed in their natural environments, perched on a twig or soaring through the air. “The concept of this miniatures is to express the intricacy and vibrancy of the birds around us,” they say. “We used the technique of layered paper cutting to give volume to the artworks and get a three-dimensional feel to them.”
