]]> Food connects families and we’re sure there are certain foods that bring you right back to your childhood. Such is the case with ceramics artist Mechelle Bounpraseut, who explores her identity as a first-generation daughter of Laotian refugees by creating branded food and drink items that represent her culture.

Her journey to becoming an artist wasn’t easy as she was raised a Jehovah’s witness and discouraged from following her artistic passions. Eventually in her 20s she left the religion, got married, and fulfilled her dream of being an artist. She started by drawing and creating zines and then she took a ceramics course and discovered her talents. Before long she was designing bright, clay miniature household items.

One of her ceramics, a Heinz ketchup bottle, which can be found in fridges around the world, represents her family preparing and eating pho together. Through her designs, she looks back at her childhood and makes new memories.

My parents come from Laos, the land of condiments. Every bottle, every jar reminds me of them. When mum made Pho, you could smell the broth while it simmered all morning. Then at lunch you would gleefully season your own bowl. A little soy, a little sugar, a squeeze of lemon, a dash of Heinz tomato sauce and pepper. Then mum would taste it to make sure it was just right. When mum made me eggs with Maggi sauce sprinkled on top to eat with sticky rice. When dad made me Jeow, (a Lao sweet and salty dipping sauce) with chillis and herbs freshly pick from the garden with Healthy Boy Brand Soy sauce. I may not always understand my parents or Lao culture which I often feel dissconnected from. But when I make Lao food for them, for my husband and a few special friends. I hope my parents see that I watched them as I was growing up and I learnt and remembered. That I am appreciative and grateful. . . . 🦐 There used to be a buffet in the food court of my local Westfields. The deal was you get a plate and shovel what you could on top. You could basically feed your entire family if you stacked everything right like reverse Jenga. It was like building a house, you needed a strong soild foundation of rice. Then placed tight groupings of stirfries on top, never loading up on too much liquid as it destablises everything. Then the fried shit goes on top like a roof.
