New York-based designer and inventor, Archie Archambault, delivers hi-quality chart content. His idea of a good time? Translating the world around him into minimalist maps and diagrams that help simplify complex ideas.

“When I started taking this design practice seriously, I went in a dozen different directions,” Archambault relayed in an interview with the Ohh Deer blog. “Most of it was type and image with quippy or impactful messages. I made things that were funny, clever, crude, and everything in-between, but the maps were by far the biggest hit and I really enjoyed making them. Then my brain became like this map-thinking machine and I stopped thinking about other things.”

Now, completely hooked on the idea of maps and charts, he travels all over the world, exploring cities and creating more diagrams. After asking residents a lot of questions and thinking really really hard, he assembles to map, referencing current and past maps.

But his maps and diagrams also include other things, that go way beyond geography. “I make letterpress ‘maps from the mind’ of cities, planets, organs, and many other subjects,” he explained. “They’re all super-simple distillations of the complex ideas.”

Illustrator, letterer, and author Ilana Griffo admits to having a crush on handmade type and playful patterns. Based in Upstate New York, she’s known for her inspiring messages, written meticulously and shared on her Instagram page.

“As a graphic designer, typography has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember,” said Griffo in an interview with Hand Lettering for Beginners. “I used to write, and rewrite my class notes until they were as close to perfect as possible. I learned so much about the art of type as a design student, and I interned at a letterpress studio to learn more about the origin of type. I wanted to learn more about hand lettering because I knew it would bring a unique and personalized touch to the work I was doing with my design clients.”

But what began as a simple intention to learn more about hand lettering, spiraled into a blossoming career. “I took the class as a creative outlet,” she says. “While it related directly to the work I do daily, it was a step away from the computer, a new challenge. I was excited to have some direction, and someone to inspire and motivate me.”

Her playful, and visually tasteful designs will inspire you to get going. It’s that motivational boost you didn’t even know you were looking for. “I love that each person’s lettering style is a reflection of themselves,” says Griffo. “That’s what makes it so unique – your personal touch.”

Alex Steele makes wearable art, with each of her pieces a part of a limited edition. As such, Steel makes sure that her hand is involved from start to finish, whether it’s fabric dyeing, painting or printing.

Known for her bold designs and a minimal aesthetic, Steele hopes to empower her clients and boost their confidence through her unique clothes. Her collection includes dungarees, dresses, shoes, and even pieces of jewelry, all unique.

But her journey to fashion was a long one. “I started out painting shirts with bleach as a fun craft that quickly grew into a production of painting designs in multiples,” she recalled in an interview with Rue Magazine. “I focused my background in fine art towards creating art that you can wear because it was important to me to make art a daily expression. I believe dressing yourself to feel like you are actually wearing a piece of art promotes confidence.”

From painting apparel, she expanded her wearable art into jewelry which incorporated her interest in sculpture. Working with bleach lead her also to experiment with the different outcomes of black dyes, which in turn inspired her to braid the fabric into bands for necklaces to achieve a textured look.

“Since I am making everything by hand, I remain close to my collection because each piece undoubtedly has its own unique variation,” she explains. “Also, because of all the different mediums I work with, I am able to go back and forth between materials and processes to break up some of the repetition.”

Take a look at some of her unique products in the gallery below.
