]]> Often, the media’s subject for colorization is old movies and other famous photographs. Very rarely do we see the “ugly” side of the past, like mugshots of criminals from nearly a century ago.

For Ireland-based artist, Matt Loughrey, these types of photos presented to be the perfect subject for his latest addition to his My Colorful Pastproject.

Taking mugshots directly from a police identification book that date all the way back to the 1930s, Matt Loughrey is able to bring to life a rogue’s gallery of people who served time in the past for various reasons, ranging from begging to breaking and entering, theft, and pickpocketing.

The end result is stunning, to say the least. But, perhaps, more importantly, the photos serve as a great way to educate people of criminals from the past.

Colorization of James 'Whitey' Bulger Jr at Alcatraz in 1959. He is an Irish American former organized crime boss of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston, Massachusetts. Around twenty years later he would be at somewhat of a peak, extorting, loan sharking, book making and arms trafficking throughout eastern Massachusetts. He too had a complex involvement with the IRA, when in 1984, he shipped a cache of weapons and ammunition aboard the Valhalla. It rendezvoused with an IRA ship off the Irish west coast to transfer the consignment, that ship was the Marita Ann and in turn would be stopped by the Irish Navy who seized the hidden arsenal. Colorization of a 1922 image. Lola Lopez wears a large gold locket in her Nebraska State Prison mug shot. In a moment of "blind greed," her companion Cicerio Estrada clubbed, strangled, and robbed Stephen Pann in the Null Rooming House in Sidney, Nebraska, on January 9, 1922. Estrada and Lopez fled hours before the murder was discovered. They were captured in Greeley, Colorado, and were returned to Sidney to stand trial. Through an interpreter, the Mexican-born Lopez pleaded not guilty, but did admit to having knowledge of the murder.
