]]>Known for her vibrant paper flowers, Paluska believes in the value of one-of-a-kind pieces made by hand rather than mass-produced objects. The owner of Revery Paper Flora, her paper flowers are a great addition to any home without the tackiness we often equate with artificial flowers.
“I found my style through a lot of practice,” Paluska shared in an interview with Paper Talk. “I make a lot of my flowers over a hundred times and through all those renditions, they evolve into something better, not just because of the practice but I am able to see it more clearly.”
Realism and color are two important criteria. “Color has also become integral to my achieving realism,” says Paluska. “For the majority of my custom projects, I will always start with white paper so I can achieve the exact shade necessary.”
Based in Washington, DC, Paluska first discovered a love of paper flowers when she was a young mother in search of a creative outlet. “I was never a crafty or DIY type of person so I’m not sure why I thought doing something like this would be fun,” she admits
“I found them appealing initially because I hated spending money on fresh flowers and thought paper flowers would be a fun alternative for me to have flowers around my home that I wouldn’t have to take care of.”
The end result, situated at the meeting point between nature and paper, is both realistic and artistic. You’d want to check her out.

]]>But you can also enjoy Hurkens’ collection without taking part in it. Based in Maastricht – the southernmost corner of the Netherlands – she shares her passion for all things paper through her buzzing Instagram page. Her posts include tips on hand sewing paper, collage journaling snippets and – the cherry on the cake – her incredible wax seals, all handmade with special care and attention to details.
According to Hurkens, her love for crafting began early on, when she was just a child and fascinated by the desk of her father – a retired architect. “I couldn’t get enough of the pens you had to refill with ink, the enormous rulers and drawings with all these lines on it,” she shared with Surely Simple. “It felt like a trip to wonderland when I went to my father’s office and I could take a glimpse at his desk. Now that I have my own desk, which is not nearly as neat as my father’s was, but I spend a lot of time here trying to send some of my creativity and love for paper into the world.”
Her large collection of stationery now includes rubber stamps, washi tape, paper and vintage paper, pens, wax seal, stickers, envelopes, and notebooks, among many other treasures. “Some of my favorite things to do is decorating envelopes, making flipbooks and collages and write letters,” says Hurkens. “I seriously get happy by unpacking mail and discover a little bit of the world from the person behind it and the generosity is amazing amongst this community on Instagram!”

]]>Fast forward to some years later, and she’s now working as a printmaker and surface pattern designer full time. The process of printmaking is fairly straight forward: first, the designs are drawn by hand and transferred to a rubber or linoleum block. The design is carved into the block and the block is inked and printed by hand. Then it is scanned and edited on a computer in her home studio.
But when it comes to the ideas behind the designs, Lauren lets her imagination run free. “I do keep a number of different sketchbooks but they are often very rough ideas for the finished pieces,” she told the Fishink blog. “Sometimes they are ideas or themes. Sometimes sketches giving a general guide for composition.”
According to her, imagining an idea as a relief print has now become fairly fluent for her. And as for inspiration – she finds it in the world around her, but especially in nature. “Being connected [with nature] is an overarching motivation for me as a person as well as in my work,” she says. “It is easy to see how disconnected one can become with the technology available, but without respecting and acknowledging the incredible natural world it would be a much less rewarding life to live.”

]]>She has made an Elizabethan princess costume out of coffee filters, a parking garage for kids made entirely of toilet paper and paper towel tubes and cardboard boxes, and even her own wedding flowers made from crepe paper.
A lifelong crafter, Levine recalls sneaking paper doilies off the dinner table and hoarding tissue boxes as a young girl. “When I look back at my childhood I realize that my path in the craft and lifestyle world was pretty much set from the start,” she told Mom Filter. “I loved making things and was always hoarding cardboard and other materials for crafts, planning parties and decorating for holidays. I pored over every women’s or lifestyle magazine that my mom bought and made a series of tiny, strange fashion and food magazines.”
“I’m not sure that becoming a parent shaped my choice of work,” she added. “I always loved creating crafts for kids and pushed for doing the kids magazine at Martha Stewart way before I had kids. I do, however, think that the ideas that I came up with after becoming a parent, whether for kid’s crafts, birthday parties or recipes, were much much simpler!”
