Lauren Hom Creates Amazing Typography Art

We’re always amazed when we stumble upon talented artists on Instagram. And Lauren Hom is no different! The letterer decided to trust her instincts a couple of years ago and follow her true passion. She never looked back as she became a successful typography artist.

“I find that I’m happiest when creating; so, when I’m not working, you can find me—HAHA just kidding when am I not kind of working on something?” her website reads.

So far, she has worked with companies like Google, Starbucks, Microsoft, and TIME Magazine. Check out her work below and follow her on Instagram for more.

Swipe to see what 3 years of lettering progress looks like 👉🏼✨ I drew this quote (one of my all-time favs) in my sketchbook back in 2014 (the 2nd photo) when I was just starting to letter full-time. I remember feeling *SO* proud of it ☺️ I drew it again at the beginning of this year (1st photo), and looking at them side by side, I thought I'd certainly love the most recent one more. I have a much better understanding of letterforms and styles after 3 years of doing it for a living, but there's also something kinda charming about my original, simpler piece ☺️ When you're first starting out, it can be easy to get down on your work and be extra critical of it because it's not even close to where you want to be, but I try to remind my students to be kind to themselves and their art babies because here's what I've learned: your skills and style will evolve over time, and once you've mastered something, it's really hard to go back to a looser, more naive style. There's room in the illustration world for really refined work and there's room for looser, more playful work 🙌🏼 Appreciate where your work used to be, enjoy where it is currently, and look forward to where it will be in the future 💕 All that matters is that you're enjoying the work and are committed to putting in the effort to grow 🌿 | Quote from the poem 'You Learn' by Jorge Luis Borges 📖

Ending my intense month of international work travel with a few days in Budapest with @twahlin to try to turn our work brains off for a hot second. The itinerary? Soaking in thermal baths, eating ice cream, and hanging out at bars and cafes without our laptops (you know, like most people do when they go to bars and reataurants) 😅⠀ ~⠀ After doing the #digitalnomad thing from 2016-2017 and still traveling extensively for business nowadays, my lines between work and travel are blurred. And dating another entrepreneur, while wonderful in many ways, means that the line between my professional life and and personal life often gets blurred too. I have a hard time completely stepping away from my work because I genuinely enjoy it, but at the same time, I know that taking a true break is necessary recharging time.⠀ ~⠀ 💡Other creative freelancers and entrepreneurs: what are your favorite ways to take a break and give your work brain a rest, in both big and small ways? What strategies have worked (and haven't worked) for you? 👉🏽Here are a few of mine:⠀ ~⠀ I don't bring my laptop into the bedroom anymore, and I've been mostly good about leaving my phone out of bedside reach too. When we're home, I take the time to plan, shop for, and cook 90% of our meals from scratch. Over the last 4 months, I've learned how to make tofu, almond + coconut milks, kombucha, bread, crackers, and seitan. Cooking brings me into this amazing peaceful yet productive state (win win!). Tom and I both take Saturdays off *completely* to spend time with each other in a non-worky way. Sundays are questionable, as Monday to-do list thoughts tend to creep in, but hey, we're trying 😉

Have you been waiting for a sign from the universe to take action on something?💫 If you’re waiting on one, you could be waiting for a reaaaaaally long time. So this week, we're taking fate into our *own* hands for this week’s #HOMwork assignment (link is in my profile to sign up for the weekly email!)💌 ~ The assignment is to turn a sign you’ve been waiting for into an *actual* sign by lettering or illustrating it (bonus pts for mocking it up on a billboard, poster, or any other physical sign – get creative with it!)✨ ~ 👆🏽This piece is the sign I've been waiting for when it comes to making decisions in MY business. It's a golden bit of advice my business coach @the_content_queen gave me last year when I was having a hard time deciding what steps to take next with my content and online courses. 🤔 Sensing my hesitation, Rebecca asked me, “Well, what would feel good to work on right now? What would be fun for you?” and then dropped these words of wisdom on me: “I think you should follow the fun.”🙌🏽 ~ I loved it so much that I jotted it down and lettered this as a reminder to myself (and other creative entrepreneurs in a similar space) that the reason my business exists is because I directed my time and energy towards something I loved and enjoyed (which to me, meant something fun!). I immediately felt unstuck and began to list off ideas for classes, blog posts, and content that sounded fun to make, and we began to roll out a plan 💕 ~ I know every business is different, but I think it’s especially important for art/creative-based entrepreneurs to focus on making things that they *actually* enjoy making. Think back to why you started your business in the first place, and use that as your compass 🔮 The beauty of running your own biz is that you get to call the shots, so if you’re ever feeling stuck about what to do next with your content, marketing, or creative projects, I hope these three little words will be as helpful for you as they were for me ♥️
