Art always has a function. Most of the time, that functionality is expressed only in the artwork’s visual appeal while its practical use is almost non-existent. However, the works of Romanian artist Silvia Popescu have both.
Popescu creates what she refers to as “functional art.” Her works are not only pleasing to look at but can also be used in everyday life. For example, her series of artsy glasses is a perfect piece of decoration thanks to the detailed illustrations of peacocks on them. However, in case you have friends over and need an extra glass, it is there for the taking. We assume a sip with a taste of art should be pretty good.
The Bucharest-based artist stumbled upon her “functional art” by accident. She wanted to amuse her son by painting him some realistic paintings of animals. After experimenting with various materials, she discovered that glass was the perfect material for what she wanted to achieve. Just for fun, Popescu painted a few glasses and jars, and the idea was born.
Popescu now creates all types of captivating “functional art.” She paints glasses, jars, and plates, but also other household objects like clocks and liquid soap dispensers. Most of her works are available for purchase on her Etsy shop, but she also does commission work.
