Illustrator Araki Koman has been around the world, and then some. Currently based in Bali (Indonesia), she has lived, worked and studied in France, UK, China, Canada, Iceland, Denmark, USA, and Japan.

“Discovering the world and moving abroad has been in my mind from a young age,” she told The Glossary. “Growing up, I managed to find a way to combine my studies and then work with traveling.”

But though her life has been unsettled, her illustrations are anything but. Using raw lines, organic shapes, and a limited color palette, Koman’s minimalist style is influenced by spirituality, slow living, visual anthropology, and (naturally) her multicultural experiences.

“Coming from an immigrant and working class background it felt completely unrealistic to pursue art after high school, especially in France,” she admitted. “Moreover, I didn’t have anyone around me doing a creative job as a career. I thought people like me were meant to do it as a hobby and only the elite could have thriving careers as creatives. Luckily, traveling broadened my perspective.”

Are you allowing yourself to be led by the soft current of change? The one that which gives you the impression of being lost, indecisive and clueless about your current circumstances and your potential future(s)? I feel you, I’m right in the middle of it too – A year ago I thought Japan would become my forever home and Illustration my last career change. In the end, reaching Japan made me come to Bali, where I ended up creating @preciousimplicity, tip toed in coaching, burned out, finally paid attention to my longing for a deeper shift not in doing more but in diving deeper into the genuine interests that are already here – I slowed downed for a while and since then, I’ve been listening. Since then, I’ve been pondering. I looked at the bigger picture, outside immediate gain from dream clients attention, goals ticking, and praise. Where do I see myself at 60? – Finally, recently, I gave myself permission to unapologetically explore my long term obsessions for spirituality, psychology, healing and body movement not just as a subject for my creativity or for self development but also, why not, as a potential career evolution… A big aha moment – Learning reiki came about naturally following that realization and many more avenues are now fancying my curiosity. I don’t know what will be the exact next step for you and even for me, but I can already predict that if it truly nourishes our soul and enrich our lifestyle it will also naturally inspire us creatively.

What was your biggest achievement when you were 21?

Graduating is probably on top of most people’s list, and that’s definitely huge. Earning that diploma is no easy task, and you definitely deserve kudos for that.

For 21-year-old American Lexi Alfrod, her biggest feat as of yet is becoming one of the few people in history to have traveled to every country.

Documenting her journey on her Instagram account, lexielimitless, Lexi joined some 10 or so women in history to have traveled to all 196 countries.

Her last official trip was to North Korea on May 31, 2019, which she proudly stamped as “country #196,” indicating that her journey, which she started when she was just 18-years-old and fresh out of community college, was finally over.

Her social media account is full of stunning photos that serve as documentation of her journey all across the globe.

I’ve been coming to a really important realization: your interpretation of a country has nothing to do with the country itself. Its your mindset that defines whether or not you enjoy the time you spend in a place. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since September I’ve been reflecting on the experiences I’ve had in Africa. To be honest, spending almost 3 months last summer in 20+ countries throughout West & Central Africa was really rough on my mental health. The language barriers, intense cultural differences, constant movements… it can be really depressing and lonely at times. I had never thought about giving up & going home until I started seriously traveling in this area of the world. But that’s when I was reminded of the quote, “I didn’t come this far to only come this far”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m so happy that after this last fantastic trip to 5 countries throughout Africa I had a total shift in perspective! The places I traveled to were somewhat similar to where I was before but this time something was different. I’m starting to slow down. My mind is more open and prepared to absorb everything, even the frustrating bits, with patience & gratitude. It’s crazy that I’ve traveled to 189 countries now and somehow I still feel like I’m just beginning to understand the ways of the world. There’s so much left to learn!!

Nagasawa had to travel often for work and hated leaving his pets with a babysitter. Now, these cats travel more than most of us, experiencing every corner of Japan.

“I originally like traveling, and I used to leave the cats at a pet hotel or with a babysitter when I was out of home for a long period before,” Nagasawa shared. “Since Daikichi grew in the nature of Hokkaido, he was not used to people, and he caused an uproar or he injured the babysitter. So, I stopped leaving cats with the others, and I started taking them with me.”
