]]>While outdoors, Hei usually brings his sketchbook with him to capture the basic outlines of the landscapes he sees. When he gets back to his studio, he combines the sketch with his memories of the particular place and transfers them to canvas.
“When I work on canvas, I also got the feeling of travel with every brushstroke and color used,” he shared in a recent chat with Colossal.
Hei’s paintings are characterized by the vivid, saturated colors that he uses in unexpected ways. This includes purple trees, pink hills, and blue leaves. According to the artist, the “unrealistic” approach helps him to capture the “ever-changing” nature of the landscapes as opposed to capturing “just one moment in a landscape.”
