]]> Greeting cards deserve more love. Sure, they might be tacky, simplified versions of our genuine sentiments, but who says that’s necessarily a bad thing? Take, for instance, Olga Griesinger’s greeting cards. Printed and distributed by the letterpress greeting card company Elum Designs, her creations have an undeniable wholesomeness to them, and God knows we could use some wholesomeness in our life.

“I get to have fun coming up with concepts (illustrations as well as words) for greeting cards of all sorts of occasions, which are printed in a beautiful old (and complicated to learn) technique of letterpress,” explained Griesinger in an interview with The Design Kids. “I also get to design stationery collections and products, gift-wrap and gift bags, which are later sold in stores like Papyrus, Homegoods, Marshalls, TJ-Max, and Clintons. So when you are out there buying a paper bag for your gift, you may be grabbing one of my creations.”

A graphic designer and illustrator by trade, Griesinger was born in the USSR to a family of artists and designers. Having later moved to Minsk, Belarus, she went to art school by the tender age of seven. But though Griesinger had a strong grounding in classical academic drawing and painting, she didn’t want to become a fine artist. Rather, she dreamed of joining the world of graphic design.

“Through my childhood, I distinctly remember drawing two kinds of things – funny animals and characters (before I started to read) and words and letters (after learning how to read),” she recalled. “I think it is only natural that after years of practicing both I became a greeting card graphic designer and illustrator.”

Today for #goodtypetuesday I share what “Strength in Letters” means for me ? Guys, I woke up at 5:00 am just to letter this today ? and here is why! ? Since I had my son last year I had less and less personal time to spend on expressing myself creatively and that’s when I joined @goodtype ‘s weekly lettering challenges – to have fun and get my creative energy on paper/screen. It was in many ways an emotional healing from complete disappearance of personal time and space that having children brings (though it mainly brings an enormous amount of love and joy ???) Design and illustration are extremely important parts if my life and lettering is a form of expression that never gets old and never stops challenging you, especially when there is a community online that constantly resets your standards to higher and higher! As my son gets older and allows me for more and more time to draw and design (currently about 30 min at the time when he’s not sleeping ?) I push myself harder to practice and participate! “Adding thread on paper alters an existing surface and creates such a rich texture and contrast with the original image itself,” the artist shared. “It’s both visual and tactile, and doing it on paper, instead of fabric, comes with challenges and differences that I find more intriguing every day. It is a sort of conversation with the past in the images, like lifting a layer of dust and letting the color through, adding another chapter.”

Hello to all the new followers and old Instagram friends! One year ago I posted my first embroidered postcard in these little squares and today I’d like to say thank you to all the lovely people who commented, liked, and supported this feed! A bit of background for those who don’t know me: my name is Francesca Colussi, Italian based in North Wales, UK. Before I started stitching old photos, I trained as a weaver and worked as surface pattern designer here in the UK, and before that in children’s publishing in Italy. I believe in the power of storytelling. I believe in a more sustainable world. I’d love to know how you discovered my work, say hello and let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Ps. The woman in the photo is not me but a German lady that I found on eBay. She’s been my profile photo for a long time and was the first person I embroidered. The stitches in the hat are not perfect but I love her because she’s been an important part of the journey.

Thank you so much for all the photographs and postcards that you sent me. Some of you trusted me with very precious family photographs. It’s going to be so hard to choose! I’ll go and collect the last parcels arriving today at Mostyn, because, well… I didn’t realised that the 31 was a Sunday! Hand embroidery on my own old Egon Schiele’s 2003 calendar. The title is in Italian because at the time I was still living there: “Casa con biancheria stesa ad asciugare” 1917 (which means “house with laundry hanging out to dry”). After intensive and careful thinking I have started to design my own greeting cards. I had a little (only a little!) bit of help from my mama who took me as an inspiration. I created four Christmas/winter cards and some cards for everyday use. (Birthdays etc) . . All cards with an A6 size are my own designs and printed in-house on 300g thick card with texture. The texture gives the prints a nice vintage character. They are all packaged and stamped by hand. . . Price is three Euros per card exclusive shipping costs but including a brown ‘kraft’ envelope. . Since I am already on the naughty list with Santa Paws, I try my luck with the Christkind.
