]]>Hofsteede created a series of arts for the Recovered Futures Queensland group art exhibition in 2018, where artists with lived experiences of mental illness exhibit their work in Brisbane City Hall Square.
“Each piece in this series highlights the importance of embracing emotions, and to encourage self-care, self-love, and finding the strength in softness,” the artist explained. “Each photograph I executed myself of my muse Caley, and then I applied mixed media such as real pressed flowers, real butterflies, and gold leaf to the printed photograph, which was then preserved in antique frames.”

I’ve been asked a few times now why I often cover part of my subject’s faces with mixed media, and there are many reasons for this… firstly, it’s an intuitive thing, and a form of self expression. Whether that be about feeling insecure, overwhelmed, one’s mental health, or a sense of mystery or even just allowing the focus to be on one part of the portrait I connect with the most. In this particular series I covered the face as a way to present the portraits as art, and not have viewers be distracted by perhaps a stranger, but rather draw attention to the beauty of the female form, and the similarities between it and nature. Nature is beautiful, timeless, fragile yet strong – to make a connection between the two is only, well, natural
