Celebrity nail artist Britney Tokyo was very much into nail art before she even knew the term. “In elementary school, I didn’t even know what nail art was but I was drawing on my fingernails during class,” she recalled in an interview with Racked.

Born in Tokyo and currently based in LA, her style is a fusion of Japan and the US – cutesy, poppy, and glitzy. A former actress and TV personality from Japan, she’s won the hearts of Hollywood celebrities with clients that include megastars like the Kardashian clan, Rita Ora, and Ariana Grande.

“It all started after I began to post my work on SNS [Japanese Social Networking Service],” she relayed. “Even now, I receive most of my business inquiries through my Instagram! I’ve always been surrounded by art, and loved to draw since I was a little girl. I went to nail school, but it’s only been like three years since I’ve really sunk into the nails world. I started during the same time that nail art started to become a thing. I’ve always been lucky with timing for a lot of things, so I’m very thankful.”

“My first time working with a celebrity was a house call for Vanessa Hudgens,” she says. “She was originally my friend’s friend, so I wasn’t nervous. I usually never get nervous for any celebrities I do nails for. I am a freelance nailist, without residing in an agency, so usually the celebrities contact me directly. Since they already know my work that makes it easier for me to work on them.”

Her outlandish designs include glow-in-the-dark nails, Swarovski nail art, and designer-inspired manicures. Inspired by fashion, music, art, and everything in between, her nail art is always on fleek. Take a look for yourself.

Nail artist and sneaker designer, Jessica Washick, agrees with the saying: “art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” A Senior Color Designer at Nike (yes, this dream-job apparently exists) her love of color is reflected both through her sneakers as well as her nails.

But according to Washick, her love of nail art isn’t so much for the color statement, but for the process itself. “I meditate now and I came to realize that part of the reason I’m so drawn to doing nails is that there’s a lot of concentration involved,” she shared in an interview with HYPEBAE.

“You’re focusing on such small details on a design, like making a rounded edge of a miniature petal or painting a perfectly straight line. I often hold my breath when I’m trying to be exact. When you’re so focused on something it’s really easy to block out the rest of the world.” Still, she admits that “colors play a huge role too because they evoke emotion, and a good color story can take you places.”

Washick first started painting her nails in 2007 after a tough break-up, sharing her nail art in her blog titled “You Don’t Need A Man, You Need A Manicure” (preach!). She went on to study fashion design in Parsons, which ultimately lead her to her dream job at Nike.

“I’ve always wanted to design at Nike, but as I got deeper and deeper into fashion and the nail world, I didn’t know how I could contribute since my background was in accessory design and nails,” she admitted. “One day, I went onto the Nike career website and saw an opening for a color designer. There’s a lot of color obsession in doing nails so I knew I’d be able to leverage those skills, and I believed my background in accessory design could amplify that. I actually showed my nail art portfolio for part of the interview and they were receptive. That was really cool.”

Which goes to show you should never ever underestimate a good manicure!

New York City-based nail artist, Simcha Whitehill, AKA Miss Pop, jokingly refers to her style as “Back to the Future” — a nod to the past and a nod to the now. Her dashing designs are very clearly inspired by ’80s aesthetics, with her work being featured in top tier fashion magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire, as well as on runways during New York Fashion Week.

“I like to create a retro look full of bold colors and prints that still incorporates current trends to amp up classic styles,” she told Style Caster. “Of course, since nails are my fave accessory, to match all that shimmer, I’ve been bejeweling my toes too with metallic gold and silver polish. Plus, I line my bottom lash with silver so my eyes have extra twinkle too. I’m not exactly an au natural kind of girl, so especially in the summer when my usual makeup just melts right off, a little sweat-proof glam beauty makes me feel done up.”

“I think summer is all about doing what is comfortable,” stressed Whitehill. “So, if wearing pumps on the beach makes you feel good, well, then go for it.” But with summer now officially over, we can now turn up the volume when it comes to fashion. Especially when it comes to our nails.

Growing up in Busan, South Korea, Kyung Park has been drawn to beauty since she was little. “As soon as I was old enough to go to high school and started learning about make-up, I knew I wanted to learn those skills at a beauty academy,” she recalled in an interview with Dazed Digital. “After a while studying make-up at the academy, I realised I wasn’t very interested anymore. That’s when my teacher suggested trying nail art.”

But transitioning to nail art took time and effort, and she had to work hard in order to pay for her tuition. “It was a low paid job working as a beginner nail artist, but I was happy I could do what I loved while paying my tuition.”

She hadn’t stopped since and was featured in publications like Vogue and Refinery29, with clientele that includes models at Seoul Fashion Week, K-Pop artists, and high-profile social media influencers. She’s also somewhat of an Instagram celebrity, with well over 300k followers.

“I think the concept of beauty is simply an idea of self-care,” she says. “Everyone can have a different standard of ‘beautiful’ or ‘pretty,’ so I think it’s an idea of trying to present oneself according to their own standards. I guess it’s all for the self-satisfaction.”

Is it a nail salon? Is it an art gallery? Well, in the case of Vanity Projects it’s a mixture of both. The salon/art space defines itself as a luxury concept that merges a high-end nail art atelier with video art programming. “Our vision is to re-shape the way patrons perceive and experience video art by placing it in an engaging environment,” reads their website. “We specialize in innovative manicures from the most sought-after nail artists in addition to a standard nail salon menu using the finest nail lacquers,” they add.

Founded by independent curator, Rita de Alencar Pinto in 2008, Vanity Projects first began as a pop-up, organizing itself in the homes and studios of visual artists, friends, and art aficionados. Now, based in two primary locations – the first in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and the second in Miami, Florida – the original concept has drawn nail artists from around the world.

With an artist-in-residence program, it also offers top international nail artists the chance to engage and experience the exchange of technique and ideas. With a host of video artists as well, the result is an explosion of creativity and color. At least judging by their Instagram page.

But why the name Vanity Projects? “The choices when it comes to naming something in the art world is always either your name or something with ‘project’ and I didn’t want it to be my name,” said Pinto in an interview with Paper Magazine. “That’s not my focus. ‘Vanity Project’ is a twist on the pun, and then also it being a nail salon. I wanted to have fun with it as well as being rooted in an art world tradition.”

With invitations to participate in pop-ups at the Pulizer Foundation in St. Louis, The Brooklyn Museum, The Aldrich Museum, and the Aspen Museum of Art, it’s clear Pinto is having fun.
