I had the real pleasure of spending a couple weeks in Cozumel, QR, Mexico with the @pangeaseed and @proyectopanorama crews and a grrrrip of lovely artists for the most recent edition of @seawalls_ . A lot goes into these projects and I’d really like to thank everyone from @pangeaseed and @proyectopanorama, operations, local artists who received us so warmly, restaurants that fed us, hotels that housed us, businesses that sponsored trips for us, So many people ….and most importantly for me, @okellyording. Thanks babe. . More info on the project 👇🏽 . . "Pérdida de Coral es Pérdida de Cultura" (Loss of Coral is Loss of Culture) by supporting ARTivist @jetmar1 (USA) for @pangeaseed Foundation latest edition of our international public art program, @seawalls_ Artists for Oceans in partnership with @proyectopanorama. . Location: Cozumel, Mexico | 20.4230° N, 86.9223° W . Swipe 👈🏽 to view process and detail photos. . Mural theme: Coral Reef Degradation, Bleaching, and Loss of Habitat. . Artist statement: Coral and Coral Reef ecosystems are currently suffering catastrophic losses caused by ocean acidification, human development and many other preventable and now, non-preventable causes. Coral reefs support far more than just underwater creatures. They also support local human and animal communities. As we saw in Cozumel, they also help create a vibrant economy through tourism. That economy, however, can have serious impacts on the Coral. . This mural features a bright floral pattern based on local embroidered shirt patterns. The floral pattern is a metaphor for local Cozumel culture. Directly below the floral pattern, is a stylized composition of bleakly colored coral forms, Sargassus seaweed, and a fish which once used to represent the island of Cozumel. All seems fine above the water line, but as the state of coral reef systems deteriorate, more and more local cultures will be affected and dramatically changed. . PC: @abovebelowphoto . But it took him some time to get there. After receiving a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute (before which he studied Spanish Literature at the University Of Colorado), Martinez acted as one of the directors of the Clarion Alley Mural Project in SF’s Mission District for nearly a decade.

“For me, some of my first influences were murals, and I came up in that type of environment,” he recalled in an interview with The Hundreds. “When I started painting murals, I was thinking about that work. I learned about graffiti culture later in my practice, but I’ve never been a writer. I know other friends who came up in strictly graff circles who knew all about that world, but then found out more about the mural masters later in their careers.”

“In my practice, I have realized, I want to make work that reminds the viewer of what it is that we are struggling for,” he says. “Not just the struggle, but also the reason for the struggle. I personally get excited when I see people doing amazing things in public space. To me, that’s the flavor of our country, so I try to participate in my community with my art, and that is my way to play a role in a social movement.”

Artistic duo, Gilles & Cecilie, want their art to have an impact on their environment. A multi-disciplinary creative team, they create illustrations, interiors, installations, and wall paintings, and have worked for brands like Nissan, diet Pepsi, and the Guardian. While Cecile is Norwegian, Gilles is French. The two met while studying graphic design at Central Saint Martins, and have since joined forces, working around the world and around the clock.

“Since we graduated from Central Saint Martins we have always been searching for new challenges and new types of work,” they told The Association of Illustrators. “We did not want to specialize in one technique or style but to always develop ourselves and to be creative. We wanted to be a team that could solve problems, come up with ideas and concepts as well as visuals.”

“Creativity is a great skill to have when running a business, and it’s useful to have an analytical mind,” they add. “We complement each other well in our studio and discuss where new opportunities lie ahead. We believe planning and strategic thinking has to be a part of every business and life in general. Once we make a list of what we want to achieve we make spider diagrams to map out how to get there, and who could be our future commissioners.”

With a strong belief that their creativity can help communicate important issues, they have also been involved in many educational projects. “It is exciting to research, collaborate, and to create programs that are challenging and that make the audience think,” says Cecile.

“Every time we meet a new group of students or professionals we have to analyze how we are doing things. What are our procedures? What is creativity? How do we run our studio? How do we get ideas across? Going through all these questions regularly helps us to make potential changes within our practice as well as discuss with others how they work. I always learn as much as I teach.”

Their work will add a pop of color (and inspiration) to your feed:

Kazakh-Canadian artist Ola Volo is known for her stunning murals, incorporating themes from Eastern European folk art with a focus on pattern and narrative. Her work often depicts fantasy scenes, bringing together animals, people, architecture, and nature to articulate diverse stories rich with symbolism and elaborate forms.

Her work also lends itself often to the public realm with many of her murals helping to shape and beautify outdoor spaces across the world. But she also creates commissions for a wide range of international clients including Starbucks, Louis Vuitton, Lululemon, Simons, and Honda.

“My perspective is murals can bring energy to a space,” she said in an interview with The Georgia Straight. “It wasn’t till I got the opportunity to do a mural that I got to transform a space, and I got hooked! I loved that it was an idea that could be interpreted and reinterpreted every day by people.”

Her work has included neighborhood murals and corporate commissioned work in Vancouver, the Mackey Building in Sudbury as part of 2016 Up Here Festival, and “Walla Volo” in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood, the largest mural in Canada painted by a woman.

According to Volo, we are a little bit deprived of accessible public art. Her murals are therefor a “sort of a way to reclaim our city’s energy and perspective and all these blank walls.” “Making work accessible: that’s why I love illustration,” she added. “I’m able to communicate a message that can be read without language barriers. And in some ways I think public art can be responsible for that too.”

Barcelona based artists Javier de Riba and Maria Lopez collaborated to create an incredible mural that undergoes a dramatic shift when the sun sets. At first, the Hizkuntza Mural appears to be a sweet but simple picture of a whale. But come nighttime, the stomach of the whale lights up, revealing a glowing design.

The belly of the beast reveals whalers, suggesting an ambiguous power change. Passersby are left wondering if the whale swallowed them whole or if they, in fact, overtook the whale.

The mural was set in Patxa Plaza, France, a popular tourist location. The artists say they were inspired by the complicated history of whaling. The commercial extinction of the whale in the Cantabrian Sea, Eubalena Glaciallis, had forced, in fact, the Basque sailors to move to new territories.

See the mural and other works by the duo in the gallery below.
