Bertjan Pot is a designer from Holland, probably best known for his Random Light (1999).

When explaining his work process, Pot’s site explains that “Most experiments start quite impulsively by a certain curiosity for how things would function or how something would look. From there Pot takes on challenges with manufacturers to explore possibilities and push the boundaries a bit. The reward for each challenge is a new one.”

Pot worked together with his assistant, designer Vladi Rapaport, on a material experiment when they discovered an interesting technique that allows them to stitch bright ropes in order to create these unique face masks. They resemble tribal masks and look like they could carry some deeper meaning, but Pot claims that they are actually a result of an unsuccessful attempt at making rugs.

As Pot explained to Azure Magazine, he and Rapaport were trying to turn the rope into rugs but couldn’t make it stay flat. As his assistant suggested, the curvy samples they got would’ve looked great as face masks. “In the end, it turned out to be the most powerful application for the material,” Pot said.

Raised in a traditional Georgian family, Nikvashvili used his art to express himself, not by running away from his difficulties, but by facing them head-on. Now based in Belgium, he continues to channel his creativity through his original masks.

“I have always been hunting human emotions to catch them, mine or from others and then to shape them and transform to my work,” he told Hunger Magazine. “After trying lots of different medias I discovered that making masks was something I have never tried before but I have been always interested in. I love the idea that when I delete my real face and put a mask on, the mask talks, not me. It gives me the confidence to say whatever I want and touch any topic I want.”

“I was born after the Soviet Union collapsed,” he notes. “It was a very hard time. I remember hunger, no electricity and very dark days, those days shaped my identity, it’s funny to say but I’m glad I have seen lots of struggles because it made me who I am now.”

His advice to other struggling creatives? “Work every day, believe in yourself no matter what others say! Because others have their own problems unsolved, so don’t listen to anyone just keep believing and working on yourself.”

“I never actually studied anything relevant to design or to mask making,” said the Norwegian-born London-based artist in an interview with Vogue. “But I did grow up with two parents who were fine artists. My dad also taught at a few different art academies around Norway,” she says. “I grew up around their artist friends. There was always art material lying around to make things with and I suppose it tuned my eye from an early age.”

Kennedy treats her masks as places where different elements come together as a situation. “The work is about this place-situation, more so than the mask as a theme or category of form. The mask is a place,” she writes on her website.

Made from the materials she finds, as well as things she produces herself, she has used anything from fine lace, carried by the nineteen-century Norwegian author Camilla Collett, hair from a two-hundred-year-old Japanese geisha hairpiece to everyday objects found in the street.

“The whole process starts with whatever material I’m interested in,” Kennedy explained. “I connect with materials on an emotional level. I don’t draw or sketch, but instead just sculpt and let the materials lead the way.” The finished products are a thing of beauty and mystique.

“In my paintings, I previously presented each mask as a singular portrait,” the artist told Colossal. “In my current work, the faces are now interacting with each other. They are arranged together on large canvases measuring 13-15 feet long. The masks have become mythological characters having conversations about humanity. I see them as deities pondering age old questions about birth, life, death, identity and love.”

With time he became a super successful artist whose work has been featured in international media. He also had the opportunity to work with big brand names like Nike and Sony Music.

Omolade also shares his work on his website and Instagram account where he has attracted over 19 thousand followers.
