]]>Xiao Yao Saaf is the mastermind behind the Instagram page @xiaoyao_ya, and she specializes in handmade micro-crochet. She describes herself as someone who likes small and beautiful things, and that’s part of the reason why her approach to crocheting is so unique.
Flowers are her most common subject, and she uses white thin yarn – usually French DMC crochet yarn – to bring them to life, before dying them by hand. This is her favorite part of the whole ordeal because it feels like watching a flower grow and bloom in your hand.
You’ll learn a lot about flowers through Saaf’s Instagram posts since she always makes sure to list their names, along with the tools she used in their making. We’ve also seen her share some of her patterns, and you can give them a shot if you’re a crocheting enthusiast trying to recreate her work.
Saaf’s crochet isn’t only inspired by flowers, but nature in general, and we’ve seen her crochet everything from butterflies to pine cones and acorns over the years.

]]>Her untraditional career path meant that Yamashiro moved from place to place. Based first in San Diego and later San Francisco, she would perform with her punk/experimental band, The Merdivorators, creating interactive installations and recreating tropes of after school specials and sitcoms. Upon moving to New York, she became one-fourth of the JUDY collective, curating and creating queer, multimedia nightlife events. And most recently, she’s performed as a professional wrestler, named Candy Pain.
But back to her crochet art. “As a teenager, I learned how to crochet from my mom, Takako Yamashiro,” she told the Urban Outfitters blog. “I never learned how to read patterns.” Once she figured out that crochet could be so much more than scarfs and baby blankets, the possibilities were endless. “I have been consistently crocheting since then, making costumes, bikinis, soft sculpture, wall hangings, pillows, giant portraits based on the Cathy comics.”
Working from her apartment, Yamashiro admits she enjoys being able to cohabit with her work. “This is the first time in my life I have lived alone and I thought that I was finally going to have a ‘grown-up’ minimal, fancy, apartment. But it turns out I actually just want to live in a psychedelic TGIFridays/Pee-wee’s Playhouse with plants,” she jokes.
“My aesthetic is all about bright colors, humor and the queering of pop culture,” she adds. “So, being surrounded by my work and the beautiful work of my friends creates a pop culture of its own: it’s all around me and part of my daily life.”
Take a look at some of her quirky creations.

]]>Beginning as a street artist she soon exhibited her works around the world, in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Turkey, France, Italy, Poland, and Costa Rica (among others). Using her art as a call for action, she doesn’t shy away from politics or activism and is an avid supporter of women’s rights, equality, and freedom of expression.
“When I was a little girl, there was nothing in the department stores,” she recalled her love story with crochet in an interview with Spear’s Magazine.
“As a kid I learned to crochet a little. It was something to do when I was growing up; we had to reinvent what we had, to make something out of it. I spent a whole week collecting the tin caps from the milk we got every day to make art. I would collect the shiny paper when we had chocolate and make something out of it. I really hate it when artists say, ‘I can’t work because I don’t have materials.’ Find your own materials! Find your own!”
“It wasn’t my dream to be an artist,” she admitted. “My dream was to have a different life. In Poland I wouldn’t have the chance to have my own life. By moving here I could write my own life, the story that I want to have.”
