Illustrator and paper artist Sam Pierpoint crafts marvelous miniature worlds out of paper. Some of those worlds are natural, others urban, but all created with equal skill. Currently based in the rural countryside of the Mendip Hills, just south of Bristol UK, she admits to taking immense pleasure from observing the world around her, with its comical charm, and stunning scenery and wildlife.
But in an interview with Strictly Paper, she admits that some of her inspiration comes from places she hadn’t yet visited. “There are so many places in the world where I’d love to go, many of which I have taken inspiration from,” she exclaimed. “One of those places is the Galápagos Islands! It’s the number one treasure trove of unique weird and wonderful creatures and plant life. It would be fascinating to follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and discover some of the worlds most unique wildlife for myself. The fact that there are birds there with big blue feet and they are called Boobies is enough to make it a place worth visiting,” she joked.
Pierpoint directs, designs, cuts, and handcrafts all of her creations, and regularly collaborates with designers, photographers, videographers and production companies. Her paper sculptures are used both commercially and artistically, for a variety of different purposes ranging from advertising campaigns, set design, packaging, and window displays.
