Artist Jordi Prat Pons Stacks Thousands of Books to Create Impressive Portraits

Spanish contemporary artist Jordi Prat Pons is known in the art world for his still-life paintings and use of collage in his artworks. Recently, however, Prat Pons embarked on a new creative challenge that is unlike anything you have seen before. He is making portraits of famous historical figures by stacking books.

Prat Pons started his unique series in 2021 when he created a portrait of Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. The work consisted of 2,400 books, which were neatly stacked on top of each other to reveal a surprisingly accurate depiction of the famous artist.

After his Vincent Van Gogh book portrait captured the attention of social media and the art world, Prat Pons decided to further explore his “book stacking” art technique. He followed up with a close-up depiction of Michelangelo’s statue “David,” made out of 900 books, and did a portrait of famous activist Martin Luther King Jr.

Considering the overwhelmingly positive response, it isn’t surprising that Prat Pons intends to present more book portraits in the future. According to his recent posts on social media, the artist is already working on a portrait of Anne Frank.
